Activision - No Spider-man in Marvel vs Capcom 3 ???

Ratchet & CAG

CAGiversary!
It was implied that "certain" popular Marvel characters couldn't be used in the upcoming Marvel vs Capcom 3 game due to licensing issues in the interview below:

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/captivate-10-marvel-vs/64652

Although no character names were mentioned, the majority of the consensus is Spider-man since his character has an exclusive license with Activision through 2017.

This is not the first time Activision has shafted the Marvel video gaming fans; everyone remember this courtesy of Marvel Ultimate Alliance?

Please let it be not true...

yeah but what about some of the other versions of spider-man? you could always use scarlet spider or maybe the ultimate spider-man or spider-man 2009. unless theyre rights are for all spider-man stuff then oh well. or they will just pay them to be able to use it.

The more I think about this, it has me wondering if Activision had some kind of license with Marvel until the end of 2009 for the entire Marvel Universe. Which would explain what stopped Capcom making MvC3 until now. It would explain why the MUA dlc was pulled at the end of last year.

As for Spider-man, it probably is a license to the entire Spider-Man universe. They've put the Scarlet Spider & Ultimate Spider-man already in a couple games.

Goddammit. Is there anything that Activision doesn't ruin? Maybe Disney can dispatch some ninjas or something to burn down their headquarters.
give me daredevil and all will be forgiven

but seriously.. i need my "Maximum Spider" fix in mvc3
or deadpool or moonknight. damn when you think about all the possibilities of people who havent been in these games yet it wouldnt be a total loss not to have spiderman. id like to see the black panther in there too and luke cage ( current version) and ronin. hell why not just make a seige fighting game.

Wow. If Activision's monopoly license on Spider-Man prevents Capcom from using him, I'm going to be royally pissed. Activision hasn't made a good Spider-Man game in over 5 years (I mostly enjoyed Ultimate Spider-Man). It's just wrong that they get to make shitty game after shitty game and then prevent what will probably (fingers crossed) be an awesome game from including him.
Good, more room for characters that don't suck ass outside of one infinite air-juggle.
That fact that he sucked in MvC2 doesn't mean he would have sucked in this game.

There's not many Marvel characters more iconic than Spiderman. If the game only had 5 Marvel characters, Spiderman should be one of them.

Boycott future Marvel-related Activision games, spread the word. It's bs, Spider-Man is a big part of the Marvel Universe.

I'll get started on the internet petition!

We'll need plants in all the major forums and a ground team at every Toys R Us in the nation to block moms from buying Activision games for their kids as well!

I tought something was fishy when he wasn't one of the characters featured in the trailer. Same thing happened with the Hulk in the orginal MUA, who was later added as DLC. So, there is always hope in DLC.

Remember, Activision has Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions coming out around the same time. It's focusing on Spidey's diffrent incarnations. Something tells me they're not going to let Capcom mess around with the brand. With that said I wouldn't expect 2099, 1602, black suit, Ultimate, Spider-Girl, etc, since they could very well be in Activisions game.

Some of you seem to want to blame everything on Activision.

They paid a substantial amount of money for the license. How would you feel if anyone could just take your car whenever they felt like it. You'd be pretty mad.

I'm sure Capcom will survive w/o Spider Man

Exclusive license means only Actionvision can have Spiderman universe characters appear in videogames until 2017????
The characters belong in the MVC games, this is so lame.

I would imagine buying an exclusive license must be pretty damn expensive too.

Wow, this would suck if it's true; no Venom, and no chance for a Green Goblin or Sandman.

Toss in Punisher, Thor, or Ghost Rider, and we'll be square.
Is it spiderman himself or the franchise? I want venom.
Venom was even worse; DO NOT WANT!

Release Date: October 20, 2009

Spider-man was also featured in the trailer for the Marvel MMO that was cancelled.
I want to agree to this, but the one thing that irks me is that its a game based off the Super Hero Squad universe, so then they'd have the rights to all the characters, including Spider-Man.

The one counter-argument for that would be that this could be a "Marvel Universe" game, so then Spider-Man is in.

I think the speculation is a little silly. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 was re-released in July of last year on Xbox live and August on PSN. Both came out right before Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 was released in September.

Those dates are much closer together than Shattered Dimensions (currently 9/7 on Gamestop.com) and MvC3 (currently 3/1/2011 on Gamestop.com).
The Activision/Spider-Man/2017 thing doesn't really mean much. Activision also has the comic game rights for X-Men until 2017, but I'm pretty fuckin sure that I saw Wolverine in that MVC3 trailer.

To make it clear: Activision's license on Spider-Man comic games is non-exclusive. The only thing Activision has exclusivity on through 2017 is games based on the Spider-Man movie franchise.
I knew it didn't make sense. I wonder who they could be talking about in that video though. Any other guesses?

Activision's Marvel license doesnt not include character licenses that are own by other company. For example Punisher was missing from Ultimate Alliance since he was owned by THQ at the time.

As for Spider man, Activision also has the right to the Spider-Man comic too, as they made Ultimate Spider-Man which isnt based on movie or tv show.

The game WILL survive without him, but ultimately Spider-Man should be in an MvC game. I'm sure the game will be great, but he is iconic and neccessary to the game's success. He may have been annoying to some in the previous games, but I found him to be one of my top choices. It's obvious they can cram as many characters as they want into these games, too. There's no need to replace him. I don't see why this can't be cut into a deal for a one time use. It's not going to take AWAY from an Activision game to have him in MvC3. Two different genres of gaming - and really, the appeal towards Spider-Man may actually help Activision.

Actually, Capcom got around the not having Marvel's licenses thing for the re-release of MvC2 because it was a downloadable game and not disc-based. Apparently there was a loophole for that to happen, I'm not so sure about Spidey being in this game because Activision tends to keep their stuff close.

But Spider-Man isn't an Activision IP, it's a Marvel IP. While Acti has licensing rights for comic based games and movie games, I'm sure that Marvel owns the character rights, so that might trump those contracts. Hell, Marvel *through use of Disney's money* might pay Acti off to just let Capcom do it.

Who knows, maybe Capcom is talking about Howard the Duck or something stupid like that just to keep us guessing? Why wasn't Spider-Man in the trailer? To keep us guessing. Why? Because thats what they do, even after the shit leaks *see: SFIV and SSFIV*.

Again, people, Activision DOES NOT have an exclusive license to Spider-man in videogames. There really shouldn't be a problem here.
They should have just make patch/dlc for MvC2 to include some new characters.
after the whole with MUA2 it might not be a good idea

Did anyone look at the MvC3 screens in the new Game Informer? In the background of the Daily Bugle gihting stage there's a giant Spider-Man balloon floating around like there usually is at the Macy's Thanksgiving's day parade. I think he's going to be in the game.

I was going to mention this. I don't think a lot of people saw those screenshots.. somehow, they don't seem to have made it onto the internet like everything else in the world.

That said, I was very happy to see a background for the game that actually meant something. Those generic MvC2 backgrounds always bugged me.

spiderman just doesn't feel like what he used to be and if they made a poll, im sure spiderman would be up there but on an "interesting scale" or actual sales scale, he wouldn't. ask a guy to name 5 marvel people. they wont mention spiderman or they will but as an after thought. ironman wolverine captain America, Hulk, fantastic four. spiderman is only near the top becuase of marvels constant push of him on cartoons and comics and movies and just throwing him at us. you have no other choice but to know him.

deadpool will be spiderman in 10 years

^ Not sure what you base this on but Spidey is still one of Marvel's top cash cows. His Amazing Spider-Man comics maintain very high sales, even when the stories are utter crap. I think you underestimate his popularity.
deadpool will be spiderman in 10 years
Although I love myself some DP, I doubt it. Deadpool is far from kid friendly. Thats why Spider-Man is huge. He's kid friendly but he can have an edge. He's a well rounded character.

Glad to hear that Spidey's in. Next up: Iron Fist!

Not really confirmed, just very likely.

Well you those versions of spiderman will appear in the spiderman game from activision where you have different time periods of him. So again, taken. Not to mention they have the spiderman license, there shouldnt be a license for each and every alternate universe of spiderman, should be all encompassing.

Im sure marvel trademarked the titles of each but I doubt there is a license for each version of spiderman. Hell you have spiderman, spiderman 2099, spectacular spider, amazing spiderman, spiderman noir, ben reiley, ultimate spiderman, the spiderman from the marvel knights line and another dozen versions of spidey.
