First, a little back story: Through high school, I was an excellent student. I was always able to concentrate and focus quite strongly on everything I did, and was successful in my academic pursuits.

However, in my adult years, things have gone way downhill. There is no outside reason for such an occurrence (no alcohol or drug abuse, or head trauma, LOL) but I did a lot of research and took tests online and I seem to exhibit many symptoms of adult onset ADD.

It's gotten to the point where it's really messing up my life. I don't retain information like I should, and aside from not being able to properly do my job, I cannot even focus on things I enjoy such as reading or creating music.

I was prescribed Adderall in a once daily, 20 mg dose over the weekend. Today, I took my first pill. I have read about people's experiences on various websites, but seeing as how I know and trust the CAG community much more, I am curious as to whether any of you have taken Adderall or a similar drug, and whether or not it helped.

Did he take it for ADHD with the hyperactivity being a factor, or just for ADD? i don't have a problem with being hyperactive, myself. I'm a pretty laid-back dude.

ADD generally is not a random occurance, adult ADD is usually undiagnosed childhood ADD... You say you haven't had any problems previously so I would think there is another physiological or psychological problem. Are there other symptoms you can think of, like daytime fatigue/tiredness? Sleep problems?

Sorry, I zoned out.

Yes. I have had sleeping problems for a few years now. Once I get to sleep, I generally stay asleep. I mentioned this to my doctor, along with the fact that my trouble getting to sleep seems to have a lot to do with my inattentiveness.

When I go to bed, with no outside stimulation for my brain, my mind tends to wander and I think/worry (more thinking than actual worrying, since life is mostly good ATM) about anything and everything, thus keeping me awake.

And LOL at Maklershed.

I have the very same problem, though I think it is normal for many people to do this for about an hour or so before sleep. If you're doing it for HOURS though on a regular basis, then you do have a problem that needs to be sorted out with a doctor.

I get the same thing, mostly in the form of regret.

It's hours for me. As in, go to bed at midnight or 1 A.M., and no sleep until 6:30 A.M. on a regular basis.

Shit's a wonder drug. Whenever I'm in a bind I'll nab some from my roommate. Pop two, write a paper, let it wear off and continue on with virtually no side effects.

On a side note, I have the same problems with falling asleep (thought not as profound)- taking adderall will make sleeping even more difficult.

I gt the wondering mind thing when i try to sleep too. Maybe it is ADD, maybe it isn't, all i know is that the more tired i am, the less my mind wanders. If I'm not very tired I'll toss and turn for hours thinking about completely random things, even songs that are stuck in my head. If i am tired, i usually fall asleep in less than an hour. I just wouldn't jump to conclusions about a serious problem like ADD.

Adderall is medical meth. The only people I know who have kept with taking it on a daily regement have gotten pretty much addicted to it. Ive taken it for studying and to write papers, and its just like speed. I dont enjoy it.

I had to take Adderall during my freshman year of high school when my parents thought I had ADD (which it turns out I didn't, like I had said from the beginning). I do not recommend it. You feel like shit all the time, lose your appetite, become bored/depressed, etc.

But then again, that's usually what happens to high school freshman...

I've taken it for a while now, and I hate it. I only take it on days when I REALLY need it.

Within about 20-30 minutes after taking it I feel like I can take on the world: I want to dive into projects and work and give them my absolute all, and I'm extremely happy. About two hours after taking it I can still be absorbed in projects but I become extremely anti-social, not exactly depressed just- dull. Like there's a weight pressing down on you; it's really hard to take breaks from work, even for lunch- doing so just makes you uncomfortable. After a few hours (usually a day's work,) however, you crash. And crash hard. At least, I do. Expect not to be good for much in the evening.

It does keep you up if you're not careful.

If you drink coffee in the morning, drinking anything with caffeine within two hours or so of taking it will make you seriously sick. Adderall is basically speed and you'll overload your system.

You might want to note that Adderall is a drug to treat ADD AND DEPRESSION. See, that's my problem. It's bearable if I'm miserable, but makes me absolutely miserable if I'm in a good mood. If you're not depressed, I'd suggest ritalin or something.

Anyway, do what you want- I'm not a doctor or an expert, and you might react differently than I do, but be careful. I don't like taking it at all.

That pretty much describes exactly what I went through.

Yeah, ditto on the appetite thing too- It's no fun forcing yourself to eat.

For the people who have a problem with your mind racing at night. Put a notepad next to your bed and start writing down all of the shit that is running through your head. Eventually, once you have gotten it out of your head and into a list, your mind will tend to calm down.

This works better for stuff like school work, job duties, errands you need to run, etc., that tend to swirl around in your brain when you are trying to go to sleep, but it can work for abstract stuff too.

I'm pretty underweight, always have been. Freshman year of high school was the only time in my life that I was dangerously thin. Seriously, I was 15 pound underweight before I started taking Adderall...

Personally, I don't think adult ADD exists. You either had it as a kid (which by the way I also think is incredibly overdiagnosed) or never had it. I'd try to focus on why you're not able to concentrate rather than try the quick fix with a controlled substance like Adderall.
