Adware somewhere on my computer. My protection can't find it. Help!

I'm using Spy Hunter Security Suite 3. I've scanned multiple times and it finds nothing. But I'm still getting the occasional pop-up on my desktop. Everything from "Free-Virus Protection" to a "Free Xbox 360."

Is there something else I should try? If my scan turns up nothing, I don't really know what else I can do. Also, I don't know if this is related, but I've gotten one or two errors involving something called "Run dll" in the past few days. Sounds important...

Any help is appreciated. Thanks...

Are the first two free to download/use? I have AVG, but it sucks. It broke the first day I had it and I never found a fix for it.

Spybot is free and Ad-Aware has a free edition.

Did your AVG bork up recently? There was an update that pooched things, and the solution for many was to uninstall the whole application, re-download the full updated distribution, and re-install. May want to try that if all else fails.

Alright, well, I just removed a bunch of shit with Spybot. I was about to report success, but in the middle of typing, I got another pop-up...
 
I'll give that a try after Ad-Aware, though I just ran SpyHunter again, and it found a whole bunch of Registry Defender shit, and the description it gave was exactly what I had been experiencing, so it might be all taken care of now...
 
Screw spyhunter, they have some malicious marketing techniques saying you have a virus when you don't.

I'd roll with Spybot S&D, with resident protection as well. Then get a free copy of AVG.
 
I also like superantispyware. It has helped clear some stuff off my father's PC that the others didn't get.
 
Reformat. Removing adware is like killing bacteria: if just one or two survive, then everything you did wasn't worth a damn.
 
Try using hijackthis. It shows everything that is running. Take stuff that looks shifty or you can't really tell what it does, look it up and google, and see if it is destructive or not.

Ran Malwarebytes and reset my computer. Spybot started doing something, then my computer started acting all wonky. Reset again and everything is fine so far. No pop ups for a while. Hopefully I got it.

I didn't, no. Embarrassingly enough, I don't know how to do that...
 
To help out some though, here is the steps to get into safe mode:

Turn off your PC completely, then turn it on and keep hitting the F8 key (it might be a different key, but usually it is the the F8 key) and it should bring you to a screen asking if you want to boot into safe mode. Select the option to boot into safe mode and then log in and scan away.
 
Turned my computer on and off a few times and invested several hours in it without any pop-ups. I think either Spybot or Malwarebytes got it. Thank you to all who helped. I'm downloading all suggested programs; I like to have a lot of protection...

I've been finding antivirus 2009 all over my infrastructure too. The university I work for requires Internet Explorer for their Oracle applications, and these same users rarely switch back to Firefox or Chrome when they're finished. The worst is when they get angry that they've picked this up like it's my crew's fault.

I pretty much swear by Malware Bytes. We also keep Windows Defender on all of the machines for resident protection. I've had good luck with both since pushing both out to all machines. We still get spyware/malware issues, but these issues are usually from people who uninstalled our protection for their "superior" protection.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I didn't hear anyone mention Spywareblaster. I suppose it's not an active hunter like the others.

I use a combo of Spywareblaster, Spybot S&D w/Teatimer, and Avast! for everyday protection. Overall, I really think ditching IE is the best protection anyone can get. Firefox with the AdBlock appy is my surfing bread & butter now.

Sofa King: In Malwarebytes, there's a little bonus app if you go into the "more tools" tab. It's called FileASSASSIN. It can delete locked files on your system. Just thought I'd mention it. It's a hidden little gem that rarely gets talked about.
 
I'd run a SmitfraudFix scan if I were you, popups usually means rogues and that can usually be taken care of by SmitfraudFix, MBAM, Spyware Doctor, or, best of all manually;]
