Note: this is the discovery channel version- in which episodes were shown in a different order and has been edited down for time. It is narrarated by Sigourney Weaver (Ripley) not David Attenborough. It is in the 720p/1080i resolutions.

I still do not get what is so great about this set. Every time I see anything to do with HD-DVD someone says something about this set. So can someone tell me what is so great about it?

you've never seen this series?! i've kept it on my dvr since it first aired it was so amazing. this, and "Galapagos" by NG are the two must-see series' in this category.galapagos is 3 years in the making, and planet earth is 5 years in the making. the whole idea behind both series is to show you the world like you've never seen before. like a cave in arizona's carlsbad caves that has species found no where else on the earth. even if you're not into nature, this should amaze anyone. check them out next time on tv, or pick up the set...:D
Just got mine ... wow, I totally missed that this version is narrated by Sigourney Weaver. Figured for sure that the Weaver edition aired on television, but that only the David Attenborough version had been released on disc. So much for that belief.

Figure I'll give her a chance ... saw some of the episodes narrated by Attenborough, so she's got some high standards to live up to. Otherwise, it's off to eBay to sell this one and get the true-hi def Attenborough version.

if im not mistaken, and im sure ill be corrected if i am, the bbc version is by david...the not bbc version is by her.
Thanks h3llbring3er!!!
Just ordered $27.08 (w/ tax and $5 discount applied).
I just ordered it and it was exactly $24.99, there was no tax?? I also had a $5 paypal coupon so I only paid $19.99:applause::applause::applause::applause: You cant beat that price for a 4 disc HD DVD series!!!!!! I actually saw the commercial this morning and was thinking about buying on ebay or Best buy..I just happened to see this thread and that it was updated today saying it was ALIVE again!! SO THANK YOU!!! This has to be my best feeling HD DVD purchase, and I have bought 25 HD DVD's for $10, 2 $37 XBOX 360 add-ons, and a Toshiba A-35 for $79 in the last 2 weeks!!!!!!

I went to my local BB, where I have had nothing but luck! Just for the hell of it...just thought I would give it a try.... I brought in my Discovery Store printout showing the Planet Earth for $29.99-$5 discount.. I then asked them if they would price match? They brought out a corporate email and started reading through the rules..that was dated APRIL 3,2008..they let me read it. Anyways, she went to look it up and came back and said.. ok, its $29.99+$3.22 for shipping..we have to charge you shipping. So I got..
Planet Earth 4 disc set (BBC version-1080p) for $33.21!! :rock2: :rock2: :rock2: :rock2:
i never saw this when it was on tv. is it worth it?
you've never seen this series?! i've kept it on my dvr since it first aired it was so amazing. this, and "Galapagos" by NG and "Blue Planet:IMAX" are the must-see series' in this category.galapagos is 3 years in the making, and planet earth is 5 years in the making. the whole idea behind these series is to show you the world like you've never seen before. like a cave in new mexico's carlsbad caves that has species found no where else on the earth. even if you're not into nature, this should amaze anyone. pick up the set...:D

i received my PE from discoverystore.com today, and i must say there is a big difference from the US version to BBC version. i was lucky enough to take my discovery store receipt and got BB to PM it for the BBC version, and got it for $33 after taxes and $3 shipping charge.. but now that i have both versions in my hand, i can see the differences first just by looking at the covers pics, and quality of the way it was printed.. first thing that caught my eye was a sticker on the discovery store version that said "disc made in mexico"?? second was 1080i for US and 1080p for BBC....read some forums that this was a misprint.. NO ITS NOT!! there was a difference in video quality while playing at 1080p/24.. also, US version was marked at 5.1 surround, while BBC was marked Dolby True HD. I can now see why they were selling for $24.99, but I am really happy that I got the BBC version for $33. You can think what you want, or believe what others may say, but I have both versions in my hand, and the BBC version is BETTER, in picture quality, sound quality,120 minutes more footage, and not made in mexico..LOL gonna sell my US version..

So, wait...you brought in the printout and BB price matched it for the HD-DVD version or the BR? Because as far as I know, HD-DVDs aren't in the B&M stores anymore as of a week or two ago. So, I'm a little unclear on it. I just received the DVDs in the mail today, but if I can get the BBC version for the same price, then it's all good too.

Another thing I noticed is that the Discovery edition, though missing the hour or so of footage, has extra features that are pretty interesting, too. Extra features include the tech behind the equipment, the dangers of filming the series and other stuff. It was rather interesting seeing the things the BBC crew had to go through.

Review for Discovery version: http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/984/planetearth_us.html
Review for BBC version: http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/planetearth.html

You are correct:
Discovery is 1080i (MPEG-4), with DD5.1. Episodes are shorter, as material was cut to make room for commercial breaks.
BBC is 1080p (VC-1), with DD5.1.

However, the reviewers state that both are in DD5.1 only. The TrueHD might be the misprint you heard about.

my best buy only got rid of their HD DVD's a few days ago..so I got the Planet Earth HD DVD BBC version at BB for $33, qnd US version for $24.99 shipped from discoverystore.com. THe bonus features are only on the standard dvd, there is no room left to put them on HD DVD or Blu-ray versions.

No, there is about 35 minutes of extra features on the Discovery edition, assumedly to make up for the hour or so of cut footage. What neither versions have is the bonus feature included in the standard DVD.

And I find that a bit odd..who knows how these things work.

i just told you that bonus was on standard dvd's only..
also, the US version is 120 minutes shorter..period, than the BBC version..and they didnt put the bonus features because there is no room for it after putting the HD footage on their dvd30 discs.
