the promotion is for "Gordon Freeman - All Time Greatest Game Hero! All Half-Life Games 55.8% Off!"

To celebrate Gamespot's "All Time Greatest Game Hero" award to Half-Life's Dr. Gordon Freeman we are offering all Half-Life games at 55.8% off!

There are other great game heroes, and we're gonna let you play with them, but Gordon Freeman is THE BEST GAME HERO OF ALL TIME at least according to 55.8% of the gaming public - thank you to all who voted.

Steam

Sweet I can complete my Source collection and get a few other games.

Why is Deathmatch Classic not included? Isn't it Half Life 1 related? Half Life Opposing Force isn't even in the deal. Yea would be just a $2 difference per game but it's still weird.

This made me lol a little "There are other great game heroes, and we're gonna let you play with them, but Gordon Freeman is THE BEST GAME HERO OF ALL TIME at least according to 55.8% of the gaming public - thank you to all who voted."

Haha, that's a pretty awesome that they're putting their games on discount because of of a contest.

Now quick, everyone vote for L4D2 as the most anticipated game of 2009 so that they give us 100% off at release!

Hmm, I guess because they don't feature Gordon Freeman? At least as a playable character. Is a little strange that Opposing Force isn't part of the deal when even Blue Shift is though.
I keep waiting for them to put Orange Box on sale again. Why oh why did I miss the last one!?
Same here. I'm hoping we'll see it go on sale at some point before the holidays, because TF2 on the 360 isn't cutting it.

Hahaha, I know how you feel. I missed out on the deal, but ended up buying Orange Box for $30. To think, a whole $20 more than I needed to pay had I jumped at the deal the first time.

I picked up Half-life 2: Deathmatch to get the source SDK so that I can play Zombie Panic...not a bad deal for $2.19.

the only thing developed by valve that i don't have is CS:Source and DoD Source (counts as one thing cause they come together in the retail pack). unfortunately not part of the sale...
This is great and all, but how many fucking times are they going to do this?
Yea no kidding, and this sale sucks compared to the last time they discounted half-life.

After listening to the Rebel FM Game Club: Half Life 2 podcasts I feel compelled to buy the Half Life 2: Episodes 1 & 2 package as if I don't have anything else to play right now.

Damn Steam for having so many sales!
Why is it 55.8% and not just 55% or 56%? does 55.8 have something to do with half life?
I believe they won the Gamespot contest with 55.8% of the vote :)

The number is not significant to the series at all

ok i didn't remember 55.8 having to do with the series but I wasn't sure. Hell I started to think it had somthing to do with half life, not the game but this half life.

it's described in the OP
Going to use this sale to finally play the original half-life. So should I get the original or Source?
Trust me, you don't want to play Half-Life 1. It drags on worse than Dragon Ball Z. Don't judge how good of a game HL1 is by how good HL2 is.

Buy Half Life 2 and wait for the Black Mesa mod instead. That being said if you really want to play Half Life 1 in its original form, source would be a better option.

Also, if you guys really want Blue Shift and Opposing Force, you can just buy the Half Life 1 anthology. It's part of the deal and comes with everything.

Really? Crap, I was thinking of getting the HL1 Anthology pack, but I felt HL2 was dragged out and pretty annoying as it is. I was hoping HL1 would be better, being the predecessor and supposed classic and all. Decisions, decisions.
Don't forget when it was on sale for $0.99 last year!
Actually it was $0.98, in celebration of 10 year-anniversary of Half-Life 1.

Blah blah blah specifics.

So you don't think 15.39 is a good deal for the Half Life 2 pack ? I have not played a complete game on this series before.

It's a fine value, but the complete Orange Box has been on sale for less before. That's the only reason people aren't excited about the deal - it's been better.

That's right, unless you're going for the Half Life 1 Anthology, which this isn't bad for.

BS, HL1 is great.

And original is better than source. Source adds better looking water, big whoop. It breaks scripted events, fixes no bugs, uses the original character models (whereas you can integrate the official Hi Res Model Pack into the original version)...

What he said.

HL1 is a complete blast to play, so don't let people talk you out of it. Always wondered about upgrading to source, but it sounds like original recipe is the best (hmmm, just like KFC).

Source is a bit of a trade-off. The physics, ragdolls, water, and background textures (detail texturing), and shadows are much improved, but the loading times are much longer, extra sound support is missing (no more A3D or EAX), and there's a few oddities here and there. Source is probably the better version of the game, it just has a few downsides to it. But the difference isn't gigantic, not worth paying extra for when Black Mesa is coming out...eventually.

Also, you can use the HD models in Source, there's a pack that you can install to the Half-life Source files (although I've forgotten the link since it's been years since I used it).

BS, the game felt too long at that sound-sensitive boss, and that was only one third of the way through the game!

Does anyone know when this deal ends?

This is a great deal, but too bad I already got the orange box. I might get the half-life 1 pack tho just to see what the first one was like.

Don't pay any attention to chubplayer. HL1 is still good.

I bought the HL1 pack that comes with Team Fortress. Is it sadly that I mainly bought it for TF instead of HL1. Never play HL before but 6.xx made it seem worth it.

HL1 is truly a classic, it's amazing. HL1 can get the hi-res textures I believe (via Blue Shift?), HL1: Source has better physics, water, and the flashlight itself actually acts like a flashlight (correct lighting in Source).

I only played HL1 for an hour so waaaaaay back when it came out, but played HL1: Source all the way through some years back. Could've used better textures, but was still amazing, didn't come across any bugs or problems.

Speaking of the hi-res pack (which also increased the polygon count), it's amazing what we considered a "hi-res" upgrade just ten years ago. Of course, it's when you see the original pre-Blue Shift models/textures that your eyes really widen in terror.
