Am I missing out on too much by quitting SMT Nocturne halfway through?

Lord help me, I thought I played videogames to relax! I don't think I've been so frustrated since my NES controller-throwing days of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1.

I've just beat all of the Oni to make my way to Anakusa and now I have these horsemen killing me left and right when I try to get to a fusion room in Ginza or Ikebuturo. I must have died 50 times by now, even when consulting gamefaqs numerous times for boss strategies.

I like the game if for nothing more than the themes are much different than any RPG I have played before, but I can't take it anymore!

Could someone point me to a website that summarizes the story pretty well. I'm about 28 hours in, so I know there's lot ahead and I might not recognize names, but I am curious as to how this thing ends.

Also, has anyone at CAG actually beaten this game WITHOUT a strategy guide or gamefaqs? I just don't see how this is possible. Thanks.

Nocturne is an excellent game, but tough as hell. A strategy guide is required. You will NEED to have certain skills and mantras for certain fights, and the only way to know what you will need when, and how to fuse it, is to know before hand. There are multiple endings depending on which philosophy you want to follow, and unless you want to playthrough the game 6 times you should make save files at the branch points (see a walkthrough).

Yeah I gave up on this game too. I don't like using strategy guides unless I have to but Nocturne pretty much demands it.

A l e x's walkthrough at Gamefaqs is very well written and extremely helpful. The Doublejump OSG is great as well (especially for demon info and fusing information) but I didn't really care for its walkthrough section.

Also, if you need help, trying asking the people over at the Doublejump forums. There's a guy there named Erdrick who seems to know pretty much everything Nocturne-related and will most assuredly be able to help you.

damn, I better pick up the guide at Double Jump then. I was really into the SNES version of part 2, played it everyday on my psp but I got stuck and had no clue what to do next.

The horsemen? If I'm not mistaken, that's an optional fight. Isn't that one of the boss fights where it first tells you something about your candle flickering and asks you if you want to stay? If so, just choose no and you'll skip the fight. They aren't required to finish the game.

That said, at under 30 hours played you are NOT half-way through the game yet. The game is a good 70-80 hours, and that's using a guide. Without a guide, the final dungeons will have you backtracking enough to add several more hours to that - they are literally mazes. I really enjoyed the game, but you definitely have to be in the right mindset to play it, and it can be VERY unforgiving and frustrating.

Honestly, I'd say if you're not feeling it now then you've got a very painful 40+ hours ahead of you if you continue on. Move on to something that you'll enjoy more. :)

I beat it without any help(other than using the guide for fusions), but it took quite a while. I actually got a little frustrated towards the end and put the game away for a couple months.

But if you're terribly upset with Noctune already then you should probably try something else.

I give up on the game too even i have the guide... at least my friend beated it & unlock Dante. I copy his memory & play dante little bit (yes, it's awsome but still too hard) :(

I really didn't need a strategy guide for any of the stuff in the main storyline and I didn't find it that hard once I thought about the weaknesses and how I should plan out my party and my Magatama. The game is really good towards the end IMO, so I'd try and get a little farther. The horsemen though... IIRC, the one in Asakusa is optional so just choose to avoid when it asks if you'll stay there.

Anyway, I did pretty much every side quest and was at level 89 by the time I finished game (I loved the side quest stuff)... played about 49 or 50 hours.

you are missing the best part of the game by quitting halfway through. the story really picks up for the last part of the game.

The side quests are great, especially the last two boss fights in the Labryrinth of Amala. I'm on my 2nd playthrough (haven't played in a couple months though) and I'm right at the end, trying to finish the demonic compendium. I just can't find the motivation to do so.

the game is pretty tough.their are so many cheap kills, instant death move and you can only keep a few magneta skills. What i hate the most about this game is when the main char dies or get ko it's gameover, the ai constantly target him.The game isn't that hard if you constantly fusion your monsters.

All the sidequests at 50 hours??? I honestly just don't see how that's possible. I didn't finish the Amala dungeon, didn't really focus on sidequests, and used the guide to fly through the final dungeon as fast as possible, and I still clocked in somewhere between 70-80 hours.

I think the only thing I didn't do was finish Bandou Shrine... I fought a couple bosses there, said "fuck it," and just finished up the game.

Oh, I didn't finish the demonic compendium because that'd be pointless and take forever.

I dont know anything about the game, but yes, you're missing out on the last half of the game (I was always good at math ;) )
is this game worth the $50 it goes for? i'm thinking of either getting this, Disgaea, or the first two Shadow hearts games.
Yes, this game is definitely worth the price. I've played a ridiculous number of RPGs and this one is easily one of the best.

same here. I used the guide to get the true demon ending, did a lot but not all of the sidequests and finished at 75 hours. but there were a bunch of times where I'd have the game on pause for a long time while I checked out maps, read about enemies or just forgot about the game and went out for the night...
