Amazon: Buy 2 Get 1 Free BluRay

Allow me to take this opportunity to pimp Stranger Than Fiction. One of the best movies I've seen all year.

DVD Empire has the exact same sale. The titles are almost $1 more each, but if you still have a Google Checkout $10 off to use, it works.

but with dvdempire you have two seperate lists of movies in which you'd have to pick the 3 movies from one or the other list, there it is seperated by price

I only saw 1 movie I don't have that I'm interested in, and that's the Fifth Element. When does this deal end anyways?

From what Ive heard about the picture quality on that disc, you are better off saving your money
So does everyone agree that the detail in blu-ray blows out DVD quality or is it subtle/negligible? Basically, are blu-rays worth it?
If you have an HDTV, and are using component/HDMI cables (and not the lame-ass RCA cables that were included with the PS3), then *yes*, it's substantially better. The only DVD I own that looks so fucking incredible that I can't fathom how they could improve upon it if it were to come out on Blu-Ray is (are) the Lord of the Rings movies. Then again, that was also viewed on my PS3 after the DVD upscaling firmware release came out.

Anyone who bought 2 Blu-Ray movies on Amazon last year qualified for a year-long 10% discount on every BR purchase in 2007. For me, with that discount, and free shipping, I ordered Layer Cake, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and Fifth Element for just under $36 shipped. That's $12 a movie, and fucking awesome. Great deal.
what a shitty selection..

im waiting to silent hill gets dirt cheap... i heard its really inconsistent (sp)
The picture quality, or the movie? I can't speak for the PQ, but for the movie, I fell asleep three times in the theatre watching it. I can't recommend it to anyone but insomniacs.

Is there more detail? Yes. Will you care? That depends on a few things, namely how big your display is, and how much it takes to impress you.

I watch my DVD's on a 110" screen from a 720p Projector. The added detail of HD-DVD and BluRay discs, on MOST MOVIES, is noticible, but it really does depend on the movie and the transfer.

Many movies just dont really benefit from the added bump in resolution and color fidelity...I mean, they benefit..but not $24.99 and up benefit if you know what I mean. 40 Year old Virgin? Hitch? 50 First Dates? We need to see these in HD why?

The problem with the Amazon sale is that none of those movies, IMHO, are keepers. Fifth Element might be, its an example of a movie that has lots of CGI and model work, lots of detail that will be brought out with added resolution....but its also one of the first transfers, and its generally regarded as a pretty shitty transfer.

If you have a 32" display and you sit three feet from it, BD/HDDVD will look better than DVD. From six or seven feet away, I doubt you'd be able to see any appreciable difference. Little things, it'll look "better" but not by much.

Then again, there are big-time fanboys of the format who think that ANY bump in resolution or color fidelity is something to jump up and down on the couches about.

I've got BD and I've got HDDVD...I have about 20 HDDVDS and 2 BD's becaues teh BD's are just too damned expensive. when the BD prices come down, I'll buy more however......at 110" I can see a difference...but on smaller screens, who knows.

Display type is also going to make a profound difference. Fixed-pixel displays are going to show a marked improvement where-as CRT-based displays are so good at scaling that a DVD is already going to look near HD. With a CRT-based display, you're mostly getting better color and sound, where-as with a fixed-pixel display the increased resolution is the big seller.

On my 56" DLP it's night and day, on my 32" CRT there isn't a huge difference, on my mom's 36" LCD it's night and day.

Like the previous users have stated it depends on the transfer, quality of TV, etc etc. However, if you have a decent television you will most definitely see and HEAR a difference. The sound clarity on most of the new blu ray and HD DVD movies is phenominal. Everything is more clear and precise. Sounds no longer run together but each individual event taking place is distinguishable. Not to mention the picture is fantastic. Colors are brighter, more detail, etc. I currently purchase both HD and Blu ray DVDs. I usually read the reviews and get the better version of the movie. In the event they are the same (which they usually are because most studios have a "equality" standard where they agree to make both releases identical) i go for the cheaper format.

From this sale i picked up Identity, Kung fu hustle, and a knights tale. I had the other titles that i was interested in.

Silent Hill pic quality isn't bad, the bad thing is the Blu-Ray version contains no extras. I'm talking the movie only and that is it.
There is no reason to buy it if you have the SD version unless you want it in the best quality.

I just rented it and was happy.

The studios need to understand that to get people to rebuy movies they own, to add something extra like the Matrix and Pirates.

I watched Silent Hill last night... not bad, but not a big enough leap if you already own the DVD. Click, Underworld, Casino Royale are good picks. Gridiron Gang is a decent flick, and I'm not even fond of football.

Meh sony makes some real crap movies...... I just don't see spending 27 + for a movie I would watch once IE stranger than fiction. I never buy regular movies on DVD or HDDVD OR BLU RAY. for me its only worth it if i'm going to watch it at least 10 times, so I only buy Music or great animation Pixar and so forth, thats why I think the whole Blu Ray VS HDDVD thing is overblown, there is not enough worth owning on either. Stupid Blockbuster does not rent HD DVD OR BLU RAY. They put every other video store out of business here, then the one closest to my house closed. Bah HD cable is good enough I'm not buying these crap movies, since hollywood forgot how to make a decent movie.

I feel the opposite. A lot of Pixar movies are only worth a watch or two. I can't wait for the anime movies to start being released. I heard Akira is coming out in a few months. I'm definitely putting the money down on that. Akira in 1080P? Yes please! :D

Its an import release so chances are slim of it having english subtitles like most Japanese anime releases.

Ugh. Everytime these sales come up I can only find one or two movies. I already have some of them. Passing on this deal as well, sigh.

Never seen Warriors of Heaven and Earth. I have, however, seen tears of the sun and traded that horrible movie in at Moviestop. I hated that film (might just be personal taste). Black Hawk Down was a pretty good transfer. Some of the battle scenes and most of the daylight scenes had a noticable difference. However, at times it looked like a standard dvd (the darker scenes). Overall though it was a pretty good transfer.

The only way I would want Akira again is if it came out with the original voiceover...

I miss those California voices.

re: Akira = Me2

I got the DVD version, the updated one, popped it in...and realized...."hey..these aren't the same voices!?!?!". My Robotech Voices! :D

exactly, and from someone who watched that movie about 20 plus times in my teens, to get the "updated" version... I was so disappointed

Black Hawk Down and Layer Cake are really the only two standout titles.
