Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

16hm7a8.png

In the "Product Description" section:

r06ykl.jpg

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

Xbox Live Points and Subscriptions:

1600 Microsoft Live Points
4000 Microsoft Live Points
12 Month XBOX Live Subscription
3 Month XBOX Live Subscription]
12 Month + 1 XBOX Live Subscription

PSN+ Subscriptions and PSN Points:

$20 PSN Points
$50 PSN Points
12 Month PSN+ Subscription
3 Month PSN+ Subscription

We also have a Free-2-Play store supported by our GameConnect technology. Gameconnect allows you to link your Amazon.com account with free-2-play and MMO accounts so that you can buy things like in game currency, premium game time/subscriptions, in game items, etc. on Amazon.com using your Amazon.com payment options and have this content delivered directly into your game.

5. Price Matching notes: Generally we do not match international retailers (GMG, Gamersgate, etc) or physical retailers (Best Buy, Newegg.com, etc.)
To check out the Free-2-Play games we offer you can visit our storefront here: Free-2-Play Store

Working PC Sales for EA must be a pretty thankless job, both internally and externally. Like being the kitchen manager at a casino, or in Zune sales at Microsoft. It's not the primary business focus, and the people involved in the primary business just don't care all that much.
I actually know someone who worked for the Zune division at Microsoft. Needless to say, he changed jobs.

What shenanigans? care to explain?
For one thing they used an extremely limited extra tier that sold out in 45 seconds to intentionally manipulate the average price to be higher. Other recent things I've noticed no Steam keys for a game that's on Steam in one of their bundles with a vague message that they will be given "should they become available" and no real reason why they can't be given, and a bundle where you got no Steam keys for any of the games unless you bought at the $6 tier. That coupled with what I personally see as more of an emphasis on quantity than quality and lackluster selection has me looking to them less and less.

Obviously that's opinion. I'm not trying to get in any arguments about it so if someone else disagrees and loves Humble and still looks forward to their bundles and thinks they're just a peach that's perfectly fine but I just personally have not been happy with them at all and am really not finding it worth my time to wait for Humble bundles much anymore.

Screw 2K Sports. Sure, they made a good football game almost 10 years ago, but their NBA franchise has been far more stagnant than Madden. Plus, they treat PC gamers as 2nd class citizens with cut content and absolutely non-existent support.
at least they stil put on pc ea hasnt done that on madden game sincce 2008 itn ot bad as u thinnk it jjust depend on ur taste we get cheaper than peasents console peasent so at least that good ea will put same price on pc and take out good stuff guarentte

Brothers is great. I spent about 3 and a half to 4 hours on it straight through. Payed $5.99 on amazon for it and was/am happy about it. Crime not to pick it up at the current price.

It's an opinion that I, for one, agree with. I used to look at Humble as being the best of the bunch, but they've been progressively less and less appealing for a while now - and the terrible weeklies (especially when that Popcap one is still looming) haven't helped in the slightest.

I dont want to wait for brothers because PSN... but I should... free!  It will probably be the last game of the month.

Must be strong...

For what it's worth I absolutely adored Brothers. Yes it's more of an "experience" than a traditional "game", but it's an extremely poignant and beautiful one in the vain of something like To The Moon or Journey (although you probably haven't played that, being a PS3 exclusive). If you aren't turned off by the minimal gameplay, it's far and away worth that price and then some! Two of the best hours I've spent with any game in a very long time.
I think I'm only about a third of the way through Brothers - just started today - and so far it's been fantastic.

I haven't played Journey, but I cringe when I see you mention To The Moon in the same breath as Brothers. To The Moon was barely a game to me. It was more of a dialogue click-fest with a few places to travel inbetween. I'd hate for someone to think Brothers is in any way, shape, or form like that. I'm sure you're talking about the touching story, but I just wanted to make that distinction for everyone.

Brothers is indeed a game. There are very few cutscenes - and there aren't even any words as the characters speak a form of gibberish. And as such, there's no emphasis on lengthy dialogue. The story is conveyed through your own actions mostly. The artwork is beautiful and the locations are striking.

Most importantly, there are actual game-like things to do. There are puzzles to solve and areas to explore. There are lots of hidden (and optional) interactions that you can uncover. It's just a pleasure to play.

And mind you, that's coming from someone that has only played about a third of the game.

Regarding the Humble Bundle issue... the only way we get a better deal on the games is if more people are less generous for their mission / cause.  I bought the games for the higher average price because that's what I thought the games were worth, IMO.  I usually always pay more than the average anyway.  If I hadn't been reading forums I would never had known the controversy around the average price.

Maybe Humble should just do what they do with the weeklies and set their own top-tier amount.

Agreed...although I do think part of the reason it's so easy to bash Humble is because the bar has been set so high. None of the other bundle sites even come close to the bundle released today (which I was extremely disappointed by, ftr). I mean, if indie gala or groupees released a bundle w/To the Moon, Joe Danger, Papo & Yo, and Bit Trip 2 for a buck I think we'd all be pretty ecstatic. I mean, two bundles ago was the Humble Jumbo Bundle, which was pretty good, and two bundles before that was the WB bundle, which was objectively awesome. This bundle really isn't any worse than HIB 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and arguably 8. And the weeklies, objectively speaking, have been mixed, but the ones that were good (Pinball weekly, the unnamed one which followed that, the Zeno Clash bundle, and this past week) ranged from pretty decent to pretty spectacular (you also have to remember, most people are hoarding game collectors like CAGs, so although we might think a bundle sucks, like the unnamed bundle, for somebody else, getting Jamestown, SPAZ, Closure, Shatter, Dungeon Defenders, and Defense Grid for six bucks is a flatout steal). It can't be easy, or perhaps even possible, to put out a really good weekly all the time. I feel like we've been spoiled by humble and have short memories.

Steam's having some trouble the last few days. Just check your game list, it'll be there.

Oh, and Tony? If you're reading this, please try not to let people whining get to you. They're just whining. You just keep doing what you're doing, and it'll be great.

People won't be happy unless you somehow start paying them to play the game.

That's an idea for EC 2015. "Play this game, and we'll give you $5. Please, just PLAY THIS GAME."

Give me a break, these deals are terrible and he needs to know so he can work on improving them. I'm not going to pretend it's all rainbows and puppies because some Origin titles are on sale for the 19th time in 3 months.

Honestly, I obviously should have tried that but the "error" message from Steam read to my brain as "Thanks for activating that DLC, now buy the game to see it!" so restarting Steam never entered my mind as a way to turn that message into a real working base game.

I mean, I don't know what you expect. Like tony said earlier, this is like any other sale. Some deals are gonna be pretty good (for me, so far I've been pretty happy with tsw for 7 bucks, dead space 3 awakened for 3.50, and brothers for 2.50) while some are gonna be comparatively crappy. It's a business. Their job is to make money, not give us games for free or something.

Want to clarify here, I 100% agree we need more deals and we're actively working towards bringing those in. The feedback about deals you guys are looking for is used pretty much verbatim much of the time.

The point I was trying to make is that the statement that the sale is currently composed of titles that are $5 greater than their November and December deals is factually incorrect.

Hope this futher clarifies :).

Cheers,
Tony

Sure, the same titles from the same publishers seem to go on sale over and over again (not to mention the same rehashed bundles). I'm aware there are a few new entires up but ALL of the most recent sales are in desperate need of some serious variety. I'm not even talking about getting games for free as pasports31 seems to assume. I'm talking about giving me the opprutinity to give Amazon some of my money by offering some DIFFERENT choices for a change.

Maybe you should make suggestions about what you want to see instead of just making vague complaints. Nobody here is able to read your mind. In the past when people have asked about a specific game, Tony's usually been willing to at least inquire, and sometimes make a sale happen.

Getting Crysis 3 and Dead Space 3 is pretty cool to me, especially since the games are not on steam. Thinking about picking up the add-ons later perhaps, since I had an internal conflict about using me EC credits on them without knowing what upcoming later in the month. Hopefully you guys do the EA deals again towards the end of the month. This way people know by then what they do and don't want to spend on and will have the time to decide if there money is better spent on EA stuff. Just a suggestion. You do good work for us Tony, it's appreciated.

Oh and did I miss the Defiance key giveaway? I've been busy for a couple days.

Is the experience on the Computer with better graphics worth purchasing the game on the PC even if I will get it on the Playstation?
I'm gonna say no, as aside from resolution and vsync there are absolutely no graphical options. It looks fantastic, but I don't know that it looks any better on PC.

is the brothers game really only a couple of hours long? someone on youtube said they finished it in 2 1/2 hours. Yeah it's cheap but I don't know if it registers enough on my cheapometer for a couple of hours.
Steam says I beat it in 2.4 hours, and there isn't any replay value really so that's about it. That said it is an outstanding 2 hours that is well worth at least twice the current asking price.

I haven't played Journey, but I cringe when I see you mention To The Moon in the same breath as Brothers.
I supposed I should have clarified more why I was making the comparison, which wasn't for the gameplay (or lack thereof if you will), but for the fact I found both really touching and emotional, and both had similarly long non-interactive segments that fell under the "experience not a game" sort of thing that, while I dislike using as a term as I don't personally agree they aren't games, gives an easy point of reference for most.

I will agree Brothers is certainly more of a game than TTM in the traditional sense, and if you disliked TTM you may still like Brothers, but it was the first thing that came to mind when thinking of similar games so, sorry if it seems a bit inaccurate. I suppose I could have used Gone Home as another comparison, but fewer on CAG have played it, and the subject matter is certainly of a different nature than Brothers so it isn't as ideal.

It's very much in the vain of Journey, which coincidentally might be my favorite game I played last year, but as a PS3 exclusive I thought it a poor comparison on a PC thread. The fact of the matter is though, in the time it took you to read this post you could have already bought Brothers, which you very much should!

Perhaps there are a lot of repeats because Tony was able to get quick replies or possibly had preapproved the placement of these games independent of how their sales were in Nov/Dec simply because they were not far off the historic lows for those games?

And perhaps getting a publisher to agree to new historic low prices might require a bit more in the way of negotiations/coddling/convincing?

Either way, it is a month-long promotion, so I don't know if it is fair to just the 2014 EC event until February 1st. I would imagine that Tony knows very well how the sale has been in its first few days versus the prior iterations and is using that information accordingly.

I remember the one where the fine print qualified how only a certain tier got steam keys and I thought that was a bit low. Anyhow, I was worried if their store was going to distract them and maybe it has. At least we still have bundle stars.

Tony, there was a recent deal that amazon had for Enemy Uknown and Enemy Within for 19.99.  I think that some of the comments are stemming from listings such as Enemy Within being 19.99 prior to EC discount instead of the combo of EU and EW being 19.99 prior to EC.

I could be wrong, but I also thought that Bioshock Infinite was cheaper earlier as well (again prior to EC).

So far, I bought a couple of games during EC including Brothers which is somewhat surprising as supposedly I was set to get this game through PS+.  I also bought Crysis 3 and Dead Space 3 Awakened which both were at FANTASTIC prices.  I was not surprised with Crysis 3 or Dead Space 3 as EA has been good to put things on sale through amazon.

So Tony, I have had some good experience and buying, but would buy more if prices dropped some or other games got listed.  Other CAGs and I have listed a variety of indie games that we are interested in.  Thank you for getting 505 and others to participate in the EC.

Waabulo

Agreed, especially since Tony's response was "I agree we need more deals, and I'm working on making that happen"

It's not really fair to judge EC until it's over, or at least for another couple weeks, given this information. If this were ALL the deals that were going to happen...yeah it'd be a bit disappointing. Tony's also said that there was some trouble coordinating this because EA was one of the only companies that returned his inquiries initially...everybody else must've been out of the office on holiday...hence why this has been really EA heavy so far. I'd be pretty surprised if there weren't at least three or four more deals by the end of this that I ended up wanting.

Sure, I'd like to sugguest you go away.
You're kind of a douche. You can't expect somebody to magically make the deals you want appear without you giving any hints as to what they are.

This! /like (outta likes)

Kudos to Tony for matching Brothers.  I actually didn't know it would be 7.99 since I don't read reddit.  That said, I'm glad AMZN DVG is still at least price matching Steam's longer time frame deals with the EC coupon.  I hope this continues to be the case during the month...

If anyone looks up any of my early posts (I've been here 3+ years?), you would know I'm a huge fan of what Tony has done these past 3 years...but there's no doubt that the deal's aren't as insane as in the past and "I" don't even expect that or even free.  In the end, I suppose some of the older timers with huge backlogs already would just like to know the general rules and them not to change when an EC coupon was in play.

Brothers was going to be on sale for 7.99 in a bit, and they matched to make it 7.49 soon...Hope this is true for things they would normally price match later in the month as well and this wasn't a selective case.

All that said, thanks for the price match and hope more nice bundles pop up.  I wouldn't mind seeing a real complete Sleeping Dogs one with actually most/all of the DLCs.

For once I don't think Bruticis is insufferable.

Some deep cuts from publisher libraries that we don't see on sale all that often would be a great addition to the EC sale. (Hint: Steam Call of Cthulhu from Bethesda for Anything lower than $5 after coupon.)

The 505 stuff being some of the most appealing, even though their prices are only ~.50 lower than what they've been in the past is a good example of this.

Also, If you can talk Playfirst into selling Steam keys for Emerald City Confidential at a discount (even 50% off), you'd have a lot of extremely appreciative Wadjet Eye fans.
