Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Thoughts on that? Asked before but got no response. :( How well have the games aged? I've never played one and am wondering if, without the nostalgia angle, they're still worth playing nowadays.

I've unfortunately never played the Thief games. I want to...I've heard good things about that mod, btdubbs. have it downloaded for whenever i get around to playing thief.

Y'know, that's a fair point. Didn't think of that one.

Though considering the whole "no avatar! How terrible!" thing has gone I have no real desire to ever get one. It already wasn't something I ever intended to get since I don't care enough about tiny pictures in the first place but people using it as a tell for... well, anything really is always one of those things that makes me shake my head. The idea of actually looking down at people without one left enough of a bad taste in my mouth to make sure that it's just not gonna happen here without a good enough reason.

And on account age, yeah, it's been a long, long time since I've been around and that ain't even including years lurking without one.

A good post by a user with no avatar is better than a bad post by a user with an avatar, sure. But without an avatar, that user's post is often attributed to "an unnamed lurker" rather than any specific user.

When you get a new driver's license and they ask you to sit in front of the camera, do you just say no, I'm fine without the picture?

Yeaah.... simple and easy to remember username, thing I ran with 10 years ago, not exactly the most hand in hand thing. 

But you don't only need to hate Capcom! The most recent Square rage to the masses involves them taking FFX, examining its plot points and characters before kicking a bomb into it. 

This may or may not be a metaphor.

This. I thought the Square Enix deals are great and if I didn't bought them earlier, I would have purchase all of them from Amazon.

Got to give credit where credit is due, whether we are his target customers or not, Tony is doing a personal service here. You don't see any staff from Steam, GMG or GG doing that, they will just post a deal on their sites and say "Here...take it or leave it, we don't care about your complaints."

It took James Cameron 10 years to make Avatar but he is planning to make 3 follow up films and release them in 2016, 2017 and 2018. He hired 4 screenwriters to co-write the sequels - Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver and Shane Salerno. Those 4 have written screenplays for science fiction movies like War of the Worlds, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Armageddon etc so hopefully they can work some magic on the storylines.

Yeah. We did have a GMG rep for a while, but he didn't interact, nor did he stay very long.

Tony, is there any way you could give us a decent discount on the LA Noire DLC pack? Maybe add it to the EC too? Would be nice, considering none of the current rockstar deals include it.

 
Oh yeah, totally forgot those older Squeenix titles though I don't think Amazon carries all of them.  Startopia, Anachronox, Deathtrap Dungeon, Urban Chaos, Pandemonium, etc.  A bundle of those titles would be cool.

This will be more than you asked for, but for anyone wondering about the Thief games a little background may help.

For anyone wondering about technical playability, late in 2012 an anonymous individual (that had access to the original game engine source code) released unofficial patches for the first two Thief games (as well as System Shock 2-which uses the same game engine). These patches, called "New Dark", made them compatible with modern systems, and the Steam versions of these games use this new "unofficial" patch and is why Steam even offered them for sale. The fixes for modern systems are also allowing for more freedom for mod makers and their texture enhancements. So, in addition to the New Dark patch (which is already included in the Steam versions), there are also some fantastic community fixes/patches that I would recommend:

TFix: unofficial patch for Thief1/Gold - http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=134733

Tafferpatcher: unofficial complete patch for Thief 2 - http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131106

These community patches add in HD textures and also fixes a few things that the New Dark patch didn't address. In essence, they enhance the game without changing the gameplay, leaving it true to the original releases.

As for the gameplay itself, the Thief games (especially 1 and 2) are still the best stealth based games out there. I have yet to find another stealth based game that captured the experience as well as these. This is the reason you see stealth based games compared to them even today. Don't hesitate to pick up this pack, they really are great games.
