Hey CAGS,

I’ve got some news I’m both excited and sad to share with you at the same time. I’ll be leaving the Digital Video Games team in Mid-March to join the marketing team for Amazon.com’s Loyalty and Rewards program, Amazon Coins. My boss and I have talked extensively about how to maintain and continue our presence here and across the other communities we’ve created in the past couple of years. To that end I’d like to introduce you to Josh, who take over monitoring, updating, and responding to this thread. Josh will be ramping up over the next couple of weeks, he  will be posting shortly to introduce himself.

Now that the “what’s going on” part of the message is out of the way I want to tell you all how much I love CAG and the posters here. This was the first community I joined when I started this job (anyone still remember that first thread?) and all of you have had a huge hand in shaping how we think about and execute Community Development and Management here at Amazon, which has in turn shaped my career these last two and a half years.

I started to write out a section calling out the regular posters and realized the list would be both overly long and incomplete at the same time. Instead I’d like to thank you all again, you all have my deep and sincere gratitude. I’ll still be around and my gaming accounts aren’t going anywhere so feel free to hit me up anytime you want to chat. I’ll probably still hang out in the thread too :).

Thanks again everyone, let me or Josh know if you have any questions!

The Indie Store has launched!
Amazon.com is launching a storefront dedicated to supporting and promoting PC/Mac/Web-based Indie Games. Our Digital Video Games team is a small group of passionate gamers and we’re all really excited to help Indie developers reach more customers quickly by providing a quick and simple process for bringing their games to market. Additionally we’ll be supporting the Indie Store with a ton of promotions, both at and after launch. Many of these promotions are designed to give the developer the opportunity to maximize their revenue. For example, Amazon is forfeiting all royalties from bundle sales and passing them along directly to the developer, we’ve also created an “Indie Spotlight” program to help customers learn more about the games and developers they love. We view the Indie developers as some of the most creative in the industry and we want to help them continue to create new and innovative experience for customers.

Why we are doing this:

  • Allow customers to discover an entirely new category of games on Amazon.com
  • Help developers reach new customers quickly. Our onboarding process is straightforward and we want to sell every Indie game available
  • We want to leverage our strengths to support and help the developers who are driving forward innovation and creativity in the games industry
General Information

Hi CAGs,
I'll be posting deals we're running on Digital Games (PC/Mac, Free to Play, Sony/Microsoft Points/Subs).

I'm also here to answer questions you might have, get you closer to the developers by hosting Q&As, setting up podcasts, live streaming gameplay etc. If I don't respond to a question you have in thread please send me a PM. These ping my email address and make it more likely that I will see your question and respond more quickly.

Cheers,
Tony

FYI. EA Games sold by Amazon will not activate on Steam.
F.A.Q.S.:

1. Does the game I'm buying from Amazon Activate on Steam/Origin/Uplay? What DRM does the game use?

There are two places to identify DRM on a digital video game detail page:

At the top of the page, below the title:

16hm7a8.png

In the "Product Description" section:

r06ykl.jpg

2. Note on Electronic Arts Games - For the most part, EA games sold on Amazon do not activate on Steam. Most activate on Origin.

3. Note on DRM with limited activations:

Our Policy

4. Sometimes I'll do giveaways.

5. I work with developers and publishers to get fun (or at least what I think is fun) content to share with you all. Here are some examples:

a. Check out the Pax Gameplay videos here: Xcom: Enemy Unknown I played Xcom with Jake, the Creative Director for the game, a few months before the game came out Also, on this page, check out the Q&A, also a community driven event.

b. Check out the interview on this page: Borderlands 2 we did this interview at E3 with Randy Pitchford this year.

c. We've partnered with the ++GoodGames Podcast to feature many of the games we carry. They talk to the developers about the game development process, how the games are conceptualized and managed, all kinds of fun stuff. I'm working on putting together full link list and will update when I have it.

What else do we sell?

dark/demons souls, virtually any roguelike (spelunky, ftl, legend of dungeon, binding of isaac, etc) . if you're chasing some of the scores around here, potentially pinball, lol. bleed had some good difficulty, tho its short. super meatboy, electronic super joy. hotline miami.
ok.. i heard the term "rogue-like" alot around here. What exactly is it?

I don't mind a game being hard, as long as it is being fair. Game nowadays are either too easy or too cheap (that's today's definition of hardmode).

any RTS or strategy game? Anything that deep, challenging w/o cheating AI?

I know we have some good stuff in the line of Dark Soul (RPG) or Super Meat Boy (platformer) but those aren't strategy.

It's exactly what it sounds like: a game that's like Rogue.

The term has started to be used more broadly now, but generally it's associated with randomly generated levels, brutal but fair difficulty, and features some form of permadeath. Some games that fall into the category would be FTL, Spelunky, and The Binding of Issac, which all play wildly differently but feature the same sorts of mechanics that connect games in the sub-genre.

I think FTL might be up your alley actually, since you mentioned you like strategy. It's not a traditional real-time/turn-based strategy game where you command units, capture/build bases/resources, and/or attempt to rule a large world map with lots of minute details in play, but definitely requires a good deal of strategy to complete as it's very difficult (but not unfair, and still enjoyable even when you lose). It's essentially putting you in the role of a starship captain and tasking you to manage your crew, upgrade your ship, and partake in space battles while trying to outrun your imminent destruction. It's very easy to pick up but has a lot of depth to it and can give you dozens-hundreds of hours of play if you get into it. I've yet to beat it myself, but would highly recommend giving it a look if anything I said sounds appealing.

I was the same way too. Never heard the term rogue or rogue like until recently around here. I'm more of a traditional/casual gamer and not big into RPGs so I guess that explains it for me.

Thanks for the FTL suggestion. The indie scene surely gives us many good gems.. is the original Fallout considered "rogue-like"? How about the Commando series ( I enjoyed them)? I am particularly looking for something that hard but fair, with randomly generated map in the strategy genre.

Anything in the mainstream or AAA release?

Binding of Isaac is my favorite, and a new version should come out this year. There's also a Roguelike category on steam you can sift through.

I'm assuming you already played the X-Com series? That's really the closest thing I think that would be a mainstream or AAA release.

I personally wouldn't think so. The design in those games is entirely too focused and long form. Part of what makes a roguelike a roguelike is replayability through random generation and relatively short sessions. You aren't necessarily supposed to "win" in one go, but each time you lose and start over the game generates a new challenge.

It isn't the kind of genre that gets enough mainstream success to warrant AAA releases. To be honest, there are some things you will need to stray from AAA titles to attain, as part of what makes a game a mainstream success is exactly what you are trying to avoid.

X-Com is a good suggestion for difficult strategy games though. It's practically a miracle that it was even made.

So just for reference is there any site that does organized giveaways for Desura keys? Indie Gala maybe?

I've got 11 extra Spirited Heart keys plus a several other random games on that Spreadsheet I gave LN.

Yeah, it sounds like XCOM and FTL would be right up your alley. Two of my favorites as well. I was enjoying Command and Conquer 3 recently, until a bug prevented me from finishing the last GDI mission...lost interest in the game after that.

You can;t do private giveaways on it no. They trialled group giveaways themselves but I've not seen any in a while and only gala themselves could make them.

Speaking of drops...here are some really crappy desura keys, have at 'em:

Airship Dragoon: L1V6C-NRVOI-9HU5A-PUHKP-62D2S

telepath rpg: JSIR5-OQX2V-NFWJC-LO561-IPKCR
Telepath RPG is actually pretty good if you like tactical TBS games.

And I suspect Airship Dragoon is good but I haven't the patience to play it. Whilst Laser Squad is one of the finest games ever made (and the forerunner to XCOM) an over the shoulder cam is not an efficient way to play a clone of it!

Yes and no. I think Diablo (and the ARPG successors it spawned) pretty clearly drew on Roguelike games for inspiration and some gameplay aspects. Obviously moving to real-time is a huge change, but procedurally generated dungeons and (importantly) randomized loot and the grind to improve your equipment with that randomized loot makes a lot of the feel of Diablo II and a rogue-like game like Angband quite similar.

theyre crappy not because of the games but because it's desura. I tried to sell those games for awhile for 10 cents a piece without a bite

And yet suddenly if those same games got on Steam they would have far more value as a Steam key. Just the way of things I guess.

And yes 11 copies of Spirited Heart, which the dev thinks is relatively close to getting on Steam but these are Desura keys and I don't know how he will distribute the Steam keys.

That Winter Wolves Groupees bundle wasn't selling very well and I wanted to do a little bit to help out and drive the number of bundles sold up a wee bit in hopes of reaching the last goal (it didn't even after they drastically lowered the goal) so I bought 10 extra copies at the $1 level.

i'll make it a little easier on you - just send one of them my way and you'll only have 10 to worry about ;)

I hadn't said it yet, so just wanted to say 'Thanks' to everyone participating in the SteamGifts giveaway; you are all awesome and the generosity of this community makes this site the great place that it is. Well, plus the deals. And the GIFs. And the [random] humor.

But not the anime-obsession. Definitely not.

no clue if this one works (or what it is), but here is a steam key if anyone wants it:

-RE9CW
-TDWWI
-NC6MC

It's funny you mention Diablo. I had it in mind as well, but edited it out to make my post a bit more concise.

There are a couple Earthworm Jims for sale on steam for those of you who were talking about its relative obscurity and lack of sales.
Not "a couple". The complete pack (all three games) is on sale.

Funnily enough, the three pack's MSRP on Gamefly is $8 (apparently DRM free.) On Steam? $20.

And lack of sales? It goes on sale at GOG often enough...

That game looks really cool.
I've been listening to a podcast that one of the developers is on, and even though I'm not a horror fan in the least I'm really excited for it. Sounds really interesting, and hearing about how they designed the scares and atmosphere has given me a new appreciation for these sorts of games. Hopefully it turns out as cool as it sounds.

As high as the requirements are on Daylight, it's built on the Unreal engine, so I severely doubt it's going to be that hard to run. That's a solid engine that always seems to scale well with the different graphics options and play on most PCs.

Hell, Tera is arguably the most gorgeous MMO that currently exists, and I think it can even run on integrated graphics at lower settings. That's Unreal Engine 3 I think, but still.

In other news, finally a new horror game that looks GOOD... I've been so disappointed with them lately. That's my fetish. :(

Well Daylight is Unreal Engine 4, and is the first game released using it to my knowledge, so I think it's a bit to early to say how it will scale to lesser hardware. I don't think the requirements are that crazy considering it's intended to be a large step up from UE3, and now new consoles are out we should expect PC requirements to reflect the bump in hardware.

You have to upgrade your PC eventually...

It's also a bit early to say that the next step in the game engine is going to be that dramatically different as far as requirements and PC performance goes than the last one.

We'll see.

Just don't bring the rest of that board over here because there were some real asshats there.

I feel like if we keep talking about them they'll show up, like Candyman or something.
