Welcome to the Official CAG Amazon.com Trade-In Thread

THIS IS NOT A FLIPPING THREAD. USEFUL CREDIT TRANSFER OPPORTUNITIES WELCOME, BUT KEEP THE PROFIT MARGIN TALK / SNEAKY OR LYING SHENANIGANS OUT

Hey trade-in pals! SENDING THINGS IN DISC / CARTRIDGE ONLY / GENERIC CASE NO MANUAL / ANYTHING BUT COMPLETE COULD RESULT IN REJECTION. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS. YOU MIGHT GET ACCEPTED, YOU MIGHT NOT. NO ONE KNOWS. IF YOU CUT OUT A UPC OR DO ANYTHING TO TRICK THE FINE(?) FOLKS AT AFS EXPECT IT TO BE OPENED AND REJECTED. THERE ARE NO HARD AND FAST RULES. IF IT IS ACCEPTED, IT WILL ALMOST CERTAINLY ONLY BE CONSIDERED "ACCEPTABLE." RISK YOUR TIME AND EFFORT AT YOUR PERIL!

I'm getting an acceptance rate of about one per day; it makes me think some supervisor is standing around with a glass of absinthe next to a couple of dumptruck loads of games...while the one responsible for the glitch is made to scan each item and recite its TIV with tears in their eyes. - Indigo_Streetlight

THANKS TO DISILLUSION386 and GI60 FOR POSTING AND MAINTAINING THE PREVIOUS AMAZON TRADE-IN FAQ THREADS

This thread’s primary purpose is to discuss Amazon.com’s video game trade-in program. GENERAL FAQ (Updated 12/26/2012)
Can I post a question on this thread?
Only if you can't find the answer from below. And please let me know if it needs to be added to FAQ.

Can I edit this FAQ? (updated 6/7/11)
You bet!

Since when did Amazon start doing trades?
The program began in 2009 and is handled by a third party merchant, previously known as NorAm International. Now known as AFS (Amazon Fulfillment Services).

What kind of shipping does Amazon provide us?
Free UPS ground ---- USPS is no longer available for free. There is now also an option to provide your own shipping.

Do I have to provide my own box or envelope?
Yes.

Do all my games in the same trade-in submission have to be shipped in the same box? (updated 3/9/11)
Not necessarily - people have sent in multiple boxes for the same trade-in submission successfully. It's even possible to send half at one time and the other half at the end of the valid shipping period. However, it's probably best to always ship everything at once.

Can I put separate trades in to a single box? (updated 6/7/11)
Sure, and they'll likely be accepted just fine. However, it isn't recommended since you would only have proof that you sent one of the trades (whichever mailing label you used). So it can be pretty risky.

Can I send in sealed games?
Yes. They won't reject games that still have the original shrink wrap.

Can I add Delivery Confirmation and Insurance to my shipment?
UPS Ground already provides you with tracking information, and I imagine you could get some sort of insurance added at a UPS store or location if you were so inclined.

I don't trust UPS ground. Can I pay for postage myself? What's the address?
Yes. You're more than welcome to do so. Just use the address on the amazon provided shipping label and make sure to get some sort of tracking.

When do I have to send my games once I have submitted my trade order?
You have 1 week (7 days) to send your games. There have been reports of submitting trades up to 15 - 20 days late, but that is definitely ymmv and not in the written rules. Send on time for the best chance at success!

Crap, I have one day to go before my shipment deadline, but the website states that my deadline has already passed. How do I print out a shipping label and packing slip? (Updated 9/9/13)
Load up any existing order (if you don't have any, check your browser's history or just submit a new one to use the link), and substitute the transaction ID for the trade-in order you need at the end of the URL.

Some step by step directions:
1. Go to your trade-in page on Amazon and find the Trade-In ID of the transaction:

Trade-In Placed:

August 24, 2013

  • Total Amount Submitted: $35.00
  • Amount Paid: $0.00
2. Copy the entire Trade-In ID (i.e. TRN-1234567-1234567) to your clipboard by highlighting it and hitting Ctrl+C or right click -> copy with your mouse

3. Paste the Trade-In ID to the end of this link:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/tradein/multicondition-your-account/print-label/ref=trdrt_ya_yaprnt?ie=UTF8&orderID=

So it should look like this:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/tradein/multicondition-your-account/print-label/ref=trdrt_ya_yaprnt?ie=UTF8&orderID=TRN-1234567-1234567

The Print Shipping Label screen for that trade should now come up.

How long does the whole trade-in process usually take?
From the time you send in your games, it may take up to 14 business days for the package to arrive. Most people usually receive their credit (Amazon GiftCard) in 3 to 5 business days, however.

How long does the "processing" status usually take? (Updated 10/11/12)
Usually a day or two with little delay at all. It may take multiple days or even weeks if it's an usual item/hardware.

My games were received on Friday (based on Delivery Confirmation), will I have to wait until Monday to receive credit?
People have received credit on a Saturday.

I do not have the manual, cover art, or original case for a game I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 6/9/11)
While the details specifically state that original packaging is necessary, people have reported in the past that their trades were accepted despite missing some of these. This is extremely YMMV, however since some were also rejected by missing manual or cover art. On the other hand, older gen games; such as SNES, N64, and GB cartridges, normally get accepted without the original box and manual, but still YMMV.

It should be noted that with the new condition requirements (see later in the FAQ), you may be able to send an item in missing some or all of the required items (manual / cover art / case) and still have it accepted in "Acceptable" condition.

I do not have the manual, accessories, original box, original included game, etc for a console or accessory I want to trade in. Will they accept it? (updated 3/9/11)
The current wisdom is "probably not" - it's pretty YMMV but AFS seems stricter than they should be on this. Your chances seem to be better for them accepting a console or accessory without the box / manual / etc if it's older generation or rare. You're more than welcome to give it a shot though if you're feeling lucky - just pack it well and include as much as you can! Don't expect greater than 'acceptable' condition though.

My game is really beat up, what are the chances they’ll accept it?
This is YMMV. Some people have reported in the past that they sent in games in bad shape that were still accepted. Your best bet is still to trade in games in mint condition. Minor scratches are expected as these are used games.

My game came with DLC codes and I used them. Will my game be accepted? (Updated 12/28/11)
It is expected that included DLC codes have already been redeemed, so you should be fine. It is a kindness however if you have no use for it to not redeem it and let the next lucky soul who buys it from awd or wherever have a crack at it. Up to you!

My cover art (PLATINUM HITS) differs from the pic on amazon, will my trade be accepted?
It all depends on the UPC so just turn your game around, type in the UPC into the amazon search box. If the game comes up, then it's accepted regardless of cover art. Click on that result to submit your trade.

I have a game from a limited edition bundle, will they accept it?
If the game’s cover art has a UPC barcode, they will most likely accept it. If your game's cover states "Not for Resale" and does not have a UPC barcode, the game will most likely get rejected. Some people have had their games accepted in the past, but this is very YMMV.

The UPC barcode is not intact on my game's cover art, will that be accepted? (updated 3/9/11)
This is YMMV, but probably not. The UPC is all powerful within the walls of AFS..

I sent in my games, all of which were in pristine condition with the original packaging, but they said that one game is damaged and is now being returned.
Always pack your games well. Put a lot of newspaper around your games in the box to secure them and to prevent any damages from haphazard box cutting. People in the past have requested their entire trade-in order if it’s obvious the damage wasn’t their fault, and Amazon ended up accepting the rejected game. This is YMMV as well.

Can I trade in multiple copies of the same game?
Yes. Once you click “Trade in” for a particular game, you may change the quantities. Once you submit, you can no longer change quantities on that trade-in batch.

How many multiple copies of the same game can I trade-in (updated 1/11/11)?
Maximum of 2 copies within 3 a month period.

I locked in X copies of a game but I now only have Y available to send. Can I just send in Y without being penalized? (updated 3/9/11)
Yes, you can always just send in a portion of your trade-in order and they'll just credit you for whatever they receive. However, the quantities you submitted for will stay locked in that instance (I think) so if you, for example, submitted for 2 copies and only sent 1, you may not be able to trade any more copies of that game for 3 months (see previous question).

Will the Trade-in of the Day TIV stay for 24 hours?
It's been reported that there is a limit (maximum # of copies) that will get the promoted TIV so lock yours.

So if I find a good flip, I can just send 2 copies of that game and not worry about Amazon accusing me of stolen merchandise?
Technically yes, but do keep in mind that other CAGs might want to participate in the current deal, and trading in a large number of the same game will definitely lower the TIV of said game. Let’s be nice to other people. This is probably moot for most folks now with the per account / address trade-in limit.

Wow, these TIVs suck (updated 3/9/11)!
Really? Hrm. While that may be true, they're often better than other comparable places. Your options of what to do with your used games are greater now than they've ever been, so feel free to shop your trades around or just sell them off on glyde/ebay/whatever. Also, not a question.

What the fuck? The TIV of a game I just bought for this deal tanked! What do I do?
The TIVs on Amazon fluctuate depending on the number of trades that are submitted, and we really can’t do anything about it. The best course of action for trading in games is to lock in your trade if you already have the games or are absolutely sure that you can obtain them. You can always cancel the trade submission if you end up not finding the games.
LOCK = SUBMIT YOUR TRADE, Don't just put it in the cart.

Can I edit a submitted trade?
Nope - once upon a time you could modify trade in quantities of submitted trades, but that ability has been removed.

Can I use my credit on items that are not video game-related?
Yes. This is the other perk for trading in games at Amazon since you're not limited to just video games.

Can I use my credit on items sold by third-party merchants on Amazon?
According to the fine print of the Amazon gift card use, some merchants are excluded. Your best bet is to try it on the checkout page of your order.

Strategy guides? I can trade in game/strategy guides? Whaaaaa?
Go to the Textbook Buyback section (http://www.amazon.com/Textbooks-Trad...ode=2205237011[/URL]). You can either search on the title of a strategy guide you have to see if they'll accept it, or search for guides. The two best search strings to start with are 'prima guides' and 'bradygames'. Might try 'doublejump' if you want to trade in some of those. (Thanks eugaet)

I locked in some hilariously overvalued trade for some weird rare game/accessory/etc that I can pick up for cheap cheap cheap. They didn't accept it. What should I do? (updated 3/9/11)
The truth is that AFS can reject things for any reason they see fit. While some people have managed to get silly things like a $200 credit for some cheerleading game (or for a PS2 - just ask io!), it's sooooooo YMMV that often it's not worth the effort. EXPECT REJECTION ON THINGS THAT ARE CLEARLY MISVALUED. That said, as long as you're willing to risk it, go for it!

What's all this item condition nonsense? And how can I get screwed over by it? (updated 6/9/11)
We're still kinda sussing out the details surrounding the new item condition portion of Amazon Trade-Ins, but it looks like there's a couple things to consider:
Good Condition eligibility (games):
- The video game, original manufacturer packaging and all original elements are included, but shows wear from normal use
- Game still plays perfectly
- Disc may have light scratches and other elements may have minor damage
- Item may have been personalized (marked or identified)

Acceptable eligibility (games):
- Game still plays perfectly
- Item may have been personalized (marked or identified)
- Item may be missing or have irreparable damage to one or all of the following: case, manual, artwork, bundled accessories, UPC

Note that a game will almost certainly not be accepted if it meets any of these conditions:
- Game does not play perfectly
- Disc is cracked
- Marked Not for Resale (or is otherwise marked not for sale)

Consoles/accessories have some slightly different criteria, but the idea is the same.

Did it seriously just ask me if I wanted my game / other item returned if they refuse to give me credit for it? (updated 6/9/11)
Yes, that just happened.

Unless you're purposefully sending them things you deem to be trash, please remember to choose the option that has them return your item to you during the checkout phase.

Who is AFS? (updated 9/14/13)
Amazon Fulfillment Services (previously known as NorAm). Dunno if they changed names, were bought up by Amazon, or what. Not too interested anyhow.

Why does my package jump back and forth between states? (updated 9/14/13)
Look at a map of the involved cities and it'll make sense. Something to do with UPS hubs and proximity to the state border/cities.

Post away!

Did you opt for "Do Not Return"? Usually they will downgrade to Acceptable for missing the original packaging on almost everything if you give them the option. That's odd...
I did send it as "do not return," and as "good" as well, so they downgraded it to "acceptable," THEN returned it. Super weird. Whatever, though - the "acceptable" value as $6-something, which was around $14 less than "good."

Weird. But at least the TIV seems to have remained the same so you could always just resubmit and try again. Although, I'd expect the $6.95 Acceptable value for sure...

Yeah, I had to look into that myself. I think it means he was banned. I don't know who did it though.
He certainly made a lot of friends in a short time huh?

It's weird that Kuro Pansa gets banned but his posts stick around as guest but Challenge Everything gets completed obliterated.

I guess it depends on who is pulling the trigger. You either get put up on a stake like in old time london or you're vaporized.

Really? Actually that is how I deduced he was banned. I saw the same "guest" thing with Challenge Everything and knowing he was banned (since it was discussed internally) I made the connection to KuroPansa that way. But maybe another mod went around and hid/deleted his stuff after the banning.

Like everyone else, even us mods are still getting used to the new site. On the old site, I used to be able to look up banned users but Kuro had just completely disappeared - couldn't look up his info at all. I was trying to figure out what happened and there was just no info.

Anyway, I guess the drops in values at Amazon have really slowed things down here. It feels strange not waiting for pending trade-ins to process. What will I do with my time!?

go trade in at bestbuy , there are alot of potential trad ins for cheap games. you wouldn't have to wait for the credit, they give it to you right after you completed the trade in process.

Like a lot of others, I was banned there without explanation 2 years ago and haven't tried since. It really sucks because every time I go into the BB trade thread I see mega-abuse of trades that went way beyond anything I ever did but it seems they did that one blanket ban in the beginning and haven't followed up since then. Even if I was able to trade (which maybe I can - haven't tried since Jan. 2012), it is way less convenient than trading to Amazon. It means yet another stop miles from any GS. And from what I've read they aren't any faster about doing trades there than they were 2 years ago and in fact it is probably worse now that they don't have game specialists any more.

I've always meant to test whether I can trade again but just never have a reason to do so when it might be a wasted and frustrating (and possibly infuriating) trip.

you might have been unbanned, alot of posters posted they were recently unbanned. just go, and do a test trade with one game. it never hurts, especially if you find out you are unbanned. instant profit.

I probably should but Best Buy has been out of sight, out of mind for me (except for the occasional sales/clearances) and frankly, I've been happier not running around dealing with all that ;). The recent GS->Amazon stuff was much more low key (no need to rush in case values drop as I see people in the BB thread doing) and I could combine it with other trips.

i actually have the opposite experience from you. i actually found bestbuy trade in process easy, i bring my games in to them, and get a gift card that same time. with amazon, it takes time to deliver it to them, and then they downgrade the condition based on guidelines however they want.

No, you have the same experience as me - you just choose to spend your time differently ;). I don't mind waiting for UPS to ship and Amazon to process. I much prefer that to 20 mile RT and waiting at Best Buy. The occasional downgrade or rejection is OK (as long as it doesn't get excessive) considering that once I mail them there's nothing to do at that point. That more than makes up for the possibility that the games will drop at Best Buy overnight or that their trade-in machine won't work or there won't be anybody there who knows how to do trades or the CS line is 10 people long, or that they may random ban you at any moment. Amazon is a known quantity and very easy to send stuff to - and pretty easy to deal with even if there is a problem.

If Dragon's Crown taught me anything, it's never underestimate a bunny rabbit. Elmer Fudd never learned that lesson, look at what happened to him...
Dragon's Crown? Please, Monty Python taught us that a long time before that game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgj3nZWtOfA

Actually the rabbit is a nod to this very bit. ;)

I know, that's one of my favorite movies.  But I'm constantly surprised at how many people on most forums I'm on are completely ignorant about Monty Python, so I figured a recent video game reference would be more recognizable.

Nobody here is saying they LIKE trading into bestbuy, but if it isn't out of the way (mine is RIGHT across the street from a GS with a large stock of games). Times like this week and the last? Crazy, I have over $750 in credit at BB, and I can easily move that into AMZ with kindle cards if I choose, I mean, sometimes it is a NECESSARY evil.

See, I don't even know what you are talking about.  What made this week so special?  It is also a matter of only being able to handle so many deals/retailers/threads in my limited time.

I had actually thought BB tanked their values a while back so it wasn't a great place to trade any more.

But yeah, it does make a big difference if you are located near one.  I might be able to get up to one on Saturday to do a test trade.  Anything good to try?  But see, even if there is right now, the values might drop at any time - thus why I much prefer Amazon trade-ins despite the long turnaround time.  Being able to lock stuff in for 7-10 days (before shipping) is priceless ;).

io, I would suggest going to do a one game 'test trade' to check your ban status at BB.  I was in almost exactly the same boat (banned almost 2 years ago with no explanation; even had two store managers call in to corporate to argue my case, since I was one of their best customers), and finally mustered the courage (after I had the motivation of the GS 50% off sale, of course) to go this past week.

Like I said, I would just take one game in, so the whole process doesn't take too long.  I decided to hedge my bets, and mentioned that I had been having some 'problems' with my account a few years ago, so I had basically stopped trading there.  I figured that if I broke the ice on the topic of having problems with trade ins in the past, it wouldn't seem quite so awkward if my trade was denied.

Anyway, everything went through fine and I returned later in the day to trade in a stack of 8-9 games.  Since the rules on quantity limits seems to be concretely defined now, I will definitely make sure to adhere to their posted limits, and most likely limit myself to 1 copy on pretty much everything.

That game is worth a lot more than $30 for a complete copy. If you can find a copy at a local GS, go to eBay with it instead.

@io, I don't think you're banned anymore. There hasn't been a single person who went into a store recently and reported still being banned. They most likely lifted the entirety of the bans from two years ago.

I had actually thought BB tanked their values a while back so it wasn't a great place to trade any more.
The sunday of last week, as well as of this week (and two days after each) there was a "WHAT is bestbuy THINKING" moment each time, they were offering ridiculous trade in values on games that were EASILY and PLENTIFULLY found at many places. For instance they offered $16 (before 100% bonus) for Aliens Colonial Marines for 360, and $15 base for the PS3, after 100% that meant $32 and $30... for ALIENS! There was a massive list of games that were easily found, multiples even. In the past 9 days or so since the first sunday, I ended up with over $750 in credit at BB, AFTER I bought 2 $50 kindle cards, AFTER I bought 3 games to be shipped on GS's trade 2 list... I estimate I didn't spend over $250 in credit at GS to get them...
Now I completely understand your stance, and it is justified, and for the most part true, the distance/time outweighs the value for 99% of it in your case, however these last two weeks, more than any other, offered such high margins that it made it worth it, $18<$34 $3.5<$10, multiply by 2, sometimes 3 of each, by about the 20+ games that were very high profitable, and than you have the reasons behind all the bestbuy talk recently. (Also that 10% TIV bonus with GCU that you always say is useless to you, got me about an extra... $100 or close to it?)

Whoa, thanks for the link. I was too busy playing SMT IV and didn't check here until just now. I managed to snag a Bit Trip Saga 3DS for $8. But the really good stuff (like P4G Vita for $15) is long gone...

my first rejected trade in today.. :(

Super Mario Sunshine.. Game and manuals were mint but I guess the cover inserts had some damage.
Hooray for inconsistency! I had a Kung-Fu Panda 2 accepted at "good" with obvious water damage on the artwork.

In other news, they finally expired the game they misplaced out of my 2-game trade. The first game got processed within a few days of when they got it. Then the second moved from "Pending" to "Processing" so I thought maybe they found it. I gave it 5 more days and finally contacted Amazon and got promo credit for it. Then right now I just got "Expired - Late Item" for that one.

So, yeah, I'll stick to one game trades from now on. I think it is a little harder for them to lose 1 out of 1 game in a package. But stick a second one in there and whoa, that is just too much to keep track of! ;).

I must be spending too much time on CAG because I had a dream in which io unbanned KuroPansa and KuroPansa was all like "shut up" and "you're getting banned!"

That Killer Rabbit was such a great easter egg in Dragon's Crown. Kinda spoilery, but wow, and Tim looking wizard, I knew it right there but instead I was on A path auto and it took me to that gazer, but then when that bunny came out on that pile of bodies, so amazing!

My kids had no idea why i was so giddy, lol, (i preceded to slow/fireward/blaze that bunny to a crisp). I then let them watch monty python quest for the holy grail and they didn't understand most of it. Like, whats up with bring out the dead, and why do they think it is so funny to have 3 heads or a stumpy black knight or ickyickyickykrapring woop boing. im so old n lame now, lol.

Shhh... Don't tell anyone but I'm not even sure I know how to unban anyone on the new CAG ;).

Hah - I need to show my kids that movie some day, though there will be some uncomfortable parts (esp. Michael Palin in the castle full of women).

Totally off-topic, but I thought this was pretty funny (but only if you are familiar with the movie of course):

And yeah, I am old and I admit it. I pretty much grew up watching Monty Python in syndication on PBS and I remember being super-hyped to see The Meaning of Life in the theater (when it first came out). I guess I could be older - at least I wasn't watching it when it was first on TV ;).

I miss Flying Circus on PBS. I'm kind of surprised that it's never shown up somewhere else, seems like the kind of thing that would be a perfect fit for Adult Swim when they have those periods where they don't have anything to run and would be a perfect fit with the audience between those that grew up on it and the younger fans who watch all the AS shows it so clearly inspired.

my Rock Revolution that I resent disc-only after having my first trade rejected (cut out the UPC) was graded as acceptable!

Oh Amazon trade-in..so random.

yeah all those virgins was a lil awkward, but i find it even more awkward when on network tv at 7 n 8pm when they have all these detective shows and they show people getting shot in the head and mutilated bodies, it is disgusting. These same people that watch these gore porn svu ncis whatever shows are the same people saying video games are destroying our morality and children, whatever. I only let my kids watch 9-2 on tv anymore, lol. yeah Life of Brian had the full frontal, so i dont let them watch that, but mostly monty python is harmless. yeah pbs never shows red dwarf or any of those quirky shows they used to have on.

sometimes i do those focus group survey stuff, get paid, but i had to do a pilot screening for some tv show they were gonna have and im a liberal swinging cool dude, but i was the only one in the room that said that was way too obscene for tv. I felt prude, but i was like, i dont want to be switching channels and turn to nbc and practically watch these people have sex if my mom or kids are in the same room, and this stuff isnt hbo, it isnt on at midnite (remember they used to have those 'call me' sexy local girl phone ads on at 1am, lol), this was just 7pm primetime tv. After I said it everyone else was like yeah i guess that is weird. idk zone. but i grew up on video games so i dont find anything really debasing about them. I even find merit in games like manhunt and dont understand what the deal was with hot coffee in gta etc when there is so much worse stuff in other media. but again totally off topic...

I can't stop reading Velo's post in Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz in my head ever since I read his backstory post(s).

On a side note I believe flipping openly and challenging the mods was and is a bad idea and hence the bans (KuroPansa and IATCG aka ChallengeEverything). The BB trade in thread had to be MODified and the fallout is obvious. This is why Handsomepete keeps insisting on this not being a flip thread and it isn't. Not that we have to worry about that during the lull of normalcy.

I always though KuroPansa was a jerk with all his comments and replies. Not to mention he posted in the GS/BB threads multiple times a day asking for flips. Hopefully he enjoys his superior entertainment!

Im guessing thats what a gray username that says guest means. A banned user?
