Anime and Manga Thread Vol. 1: Visions of a God
Krimson and I have watched the entire series. It has its moments of comedy, but honestly, the entire thing is geared towards girls and watching everyone hooking up with their "soul mate" (at the romantic age of 16 or younger) as the series progresses.

Even the ending had Krimson ridiculously disappointed with how over the top it was. If you would like something similar but of better quality, watch Nodame Cantible.
That sounds about fine for $20. I watch lots of crap that clearly isn't aimed at me. And I can deal with bad endings...

Rightstuf started their 12 days of anime sale... Not sure how much I'll get from them after spending all that money on Black Friday(and Cyber Monday). I'll probably do the same thing I do every year and wait until the final day to order some stuff.

I only watched the first 5-7 minutes of Ghost in the Shell 2.0. Not sure how I feel about the way they did the 3D/2D animation yet.

I'm probably going to be selling a good portion of my anime collection. I've been thinking about how DVDs are soon to go the way of the VHS, so I might as well get rid of the stuff I don't really like. I don't really know how soon that is exactly (might be a good ways off), but better safe than sorry I guess. Plus, I think it's kind of nice to have a smaller, more meaningful collection. Whatever. I probably won't be able to bring myself to get rid of a lot of it anyway, haha. We'll see... not going to happen until this semester is over anyway.

Same thing i was thinking, will be selling on a lot on eBay Christmas break and make my collection smaller.

Well, after my hiatus off anime (damn video games) I've finally finished up Gankutsuou and Code Geass R2.

Gankutsuou really had a amazing style. At first I wasn't quite the fan but it grew on me quickly, almost to the point where it's kind of hard to watch other anime now. I particularly liked the Counts appearance as it made him look vampiric, since you can say his actions match that personality.

As being one whose read original story, It was fun to see the differences that were made aside from being set in the future and I'm glad they took other deviations here and there. Although there were times when I hated the fact that they focused more on Albert then anyone else, considering he can be really unlikable at times, it was still quite enjoyable.

Now I've been waiting to finish Code Geass ever since the first season ended on Adult Swim. I finally did that last weekend and I gotta say, it really lived up to what I wanted to see, aside from a few faults. There were moments that I thought were really great and was really excited about, like seeing
Suzaku help Lelouch take the throne
and then there were times where I was almost completely dumbfounded and uninterested, particularly anything concerning
C's World
. Then there were a few of the characters who decide to switch sides or act completely different for no good reason, but that happens I guess.

Besides that, I still thoroughly enjoyed the show and it easily became one of my top favorites. I was kind of disappointed that I called the ending through, but then again, I had already known that
Zero kills Lelouch
, so I guess it wasn't that hard to see coming.

DVDs aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

Also, there are a bunch of shows that will never get a Blu-ray release because they wouldn't be profitable. I doubt Funimation would ever release Kurau on Blu-ray. They aren't going to make a more expensive Blu-ray version of Kurau when the DVD collection probably, barely sold any copies.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I'm in need of a new anime series to watch (I'm a huge newbie, so there are plenty I haven't seen yet).

What I would like in the series:
- Must have a long story arc that lasts the whole season (I want a series that has one main goal that is trying to be accomplished and the majority of episodes are working towards that main goal).
- Must have an ending that goes out with a bang (Don't want to get into a series that has no foreseeable ending in sight. I like to have closure on my storylines, and I'd like the ending to be where the series really climaxes).
- Great, well developed characters (this is what will make or break most stories for me. I have to love the characters)
- Prefer something that isn't too sci-fi (although, if the story is good, I'm not against it).

I guess that's all the requirements I have. I'm a huge fan of dystopia society (I believe that's the right term) type of storylines (like the books: 1984, Brave New World, V for Vendetta, etc), and love the Metal Gear Solid series (I think the characters are absolutely fantastic). So far, I've watched:
Cowboy Bebop (Characters were great, but lacked the type of long story arc I was looking for)
Avatar: The Last Airbender (Just finished this and thought it was fantastic, although, IMO, the 2nd season is where it climaxed. The 3rd season was fantastic at the end too, but it was tough to get through the beginning of the 3rd season. As great as the finale was, I felt the end of the 2nd season was better).

From the sound of it, you need to watch Death Note. It fits the requirements, and is probably my favorite anime series of all time.

You sound a lot like me anyway, considering MGS is my favorite game series of all time :). And also, i dislike Cowboy Bebop for the same reason, no overarching storyline.

Read or Die and R.O.D The TV, Samurai Champloo (though it's a bit like Bebop in its episodic-ness, it's also fantastic), and Escaflowne. Death Note isn't a bad suggestion, either.

Kurau Phantom Memory fits your requirements. Since I haven't said it enough, I will say it again: everyone needs to watch Kurau! It's my favorite anime, and I will not rest until everyone has seen it!

Kirin's suggestion of Read or Die and R.O.D. the TV is also a fantastic suggestion; I love both of those shows and they fit your requirements.

Sweet. I got a couple other recommendations for that show. It seems fairly short too, so I think I'll start with that.

Thanks for the other suggestions, guys.

37 episodes is *short*? Err... okay...
37 episodes is *short*? Err... okay...
Yeah, i wouldn't call it short considering most anime series are either 11-13 episodes or 24-26 episodes, but it goes by very quickly. It's an amazing, addicting show, hope you enjoy it.

Its short by your standards, but you might take a look at Claymore dpatel. The ending to the anime is a standalone thing, so it doesn't match the manga but it gives it closure instead. Overarching storyline starts up at episode 5. First four episodes lead you into it. 26 eps long.

Its dark fantasy hack n slash. Fairly heavy on the action, a mostly female cast, gory, nothing deep or profound about the story but entertaining all the same. Interesting powers/monster designs. Worth a look, one of my personal favorites.

Yea, short for my standards, is what I meant. Outside of Anime, I've watched shows like Lost and BattleStar Galactica, which are much longer by comparison.

Anyways, thanks everyone for the help. I'll be sure to look into each of these Anime series. I'm definitely starting with Death Note, and I'll see how it goes from there.

37 is a super-short anime by my count. one piece, naruto, bleach, reborn, and many others are in the 100's. anything sub 100 is pretty short for me and only take a week or two to finish usually.

anyway i'd like to toss in a recommendation for deathnote, claymore, law of ueki, and kiba as quick watches that were good times. i'm working on blood+ which is 51 eps but i haven't finished it yet so i can't say.

Eureka Seven is a longer show (50 episodes) that you might like too, and it fits your requirements. It is sorta sci-fi though (mecha). But they're surfing mecha. lol. The characters are probably my favorite out of any show I've seen, though (hence why it's my favorite show ever). Also it definitely has the most character development out of any show that I've seen. That's really the main focus of the show actually: how the characters change throughout the story.

Also, if you're into music, you should check out Beck. It's about a band. Pretty amazing. Characters are also great and very well-developed.

One last suggestion on a series that seems to be pretty much universally liked: Fullmetal Alchemist. Definitely fits all your requirements there (unless you consider Alchemy "sci-fi"). 51 episodes long + movie.

I will unrecommend Eureka 7. I think it fails to entertain in several ways.

However FMA is a great choice, I can't believe I didn't think of it.
I will unrecommend Eureka 7. I think it fails to entertain in several ways.
I can't imagine that being true, unless for some reason you don't like the characters (same goes for ROD TV). It's worth a checking out, at least.

Sounds like it just wasn't the show for you. It's very hit/miss with people, but when it hits, it hits hard.
I will unrecommend Eureka 7. I think it fails to entertain in several ways.
I could say the same about Law of Ueki and Kiba. I thought the guy was asking for *good* anime. ;)

Nah, I can see why you'd think that. It kinda shocked me as well. (Also, you might want to use spoiler tags for that). The story kinda got crazy after that point anyway. Still love it though.

TBH, the first 10 episodes or so were my favorite, I think. That and the Ray/Charles arc.

I'm going to rerecommend E7 because i thought it was amazing, and also add another vote to FMA. Also definitely in my top 3, but it was also one of the first series' i'd ever seen so i probably overrate it.

E7 was very inconsistent, but as a whole i definitely think it's worth watching.

I watched Castle in the Sky a couple nights ago, and it's definitely one of my favorite Miyazaki films! It had a great sense of mystery and the pseudo-steampunk technology was awesome.

Plus, Mark Hamil!

It's been almost a year since I first watched Castle in the Sky, but I completely agree with your sentiments; it is a fantastic movie.

You know, I forgot to mention that I finished Jubei-chan on Monday night. It was pretty damn good. At first I wasn't too sure about the show, since it can be quite frantic at times, but as the show progressed, the humor and the drama got better and better. The last few episodes were some of my favorites. I definitely recommend it to anyone looking for something fun to watch.

Can we just all agree Azumanga is the best anime ever?

RoD and Monster are pretty solid as well, but I can't really recommend TuTu.
Neither me or my wife found it very endearing.

I won't saw Law of Ueki or Kiba were "masterpieces" but I was trying to think of 50 ep anime I watched that were a decent time. Ueki is pretty standard shounen faire to be sure, but Kiba has a surprisingly unpredictable script. I found it engaging despite the fact it smacks of "grown-up" Pokemon.

Azumanga... the best anime ever? Psh.

It's good lighthearted entertainment, and it's hilarious, but calling it the best thing ever is a bit of an overstatement, I think. But if you really love silly comedies (silly in a good way, mind you), then, I guess I could give it to you. It's just not very deep/meaningful. For me at least, the best anime ever should have some sort of deeper or serious meaning. That's just me though.

(For the record, I don't think E7 is the best anime ever. It's just my favorite.)

Azumanga Daioh is, by far, my favorite comedy anime. It both created and broke the mold on the now-oversaturated school comedy genre.

Princess Tutu
Azumanga Daioh
R.O.D The TV
Monster
Fullmetal Alchemist
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Samurai Champloo
Now and Then, Here and There
Cardcaptor Sakura
Death Note

Thank you! I appreciate the compliment.

Oh, I listened to the latest ANN podcast today at work, and they had one of the guys from Geneon USA, Chad Kime, on for an interview. He talks about how Geneon USA was operated, and why that lead to its downfall. Also, he talks about how some of Geneon's titles performed. I highly recommend that everyone listen to the interview; it's extremely informative and interesting.

Bah, It seems Blood+ Part 2 is dubtitled just like the 1st part... Guess that saves me some cash.

I'm just counting my blessings that we got Part 2 at all. Its the first full series Sony has ever completed.

So has anyone here seen Red Garden? I watched the first two episodes and it seemed like a feminist version of Gantz without the high-tech stuff, and it was incredibly boring as well. Should I even bother continuing?
