 Anime Steals and Deals

**It is highly recommended you check the latest posts in this thread as they will often have the most up to date deals. I will attempt to reflect these sales in the OP, but always check the latest posts.**

Rightstuf

Rightstuf runs studio sales every week, sometimes even twice a week. These range from anime, manga, and even artbooks. Prices are decent, and Rightstuf has amazing customer service. I highly recommend them for that alone.

http://www.rightstuf.com/rssite/main/

You can save an additional 10% off a majority of their items (Including preorders) by buying their Got Anime membership

http://www.rightstuf.com/rssite/action/store/item/Item?ItemName=gotanime1

Amazon

Amazon tends to offer lower everyday prices on their anime, and often run sales on Funimation items routinely. Keep track on your favorites or check your daily deal's for a possible 5% off of some based off your history on Amazon.

(Also, I'd also recommend to check out Amazon's top 100 deals in Anime Bluray/DVD as they tend to show what's popular, or what is on sale.)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/movies-tv/2959127011/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_mov_1_3_last   (Blu Ray)

http://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Movies-TV-Anime/zgbs/movies-tv/2959100011/ref=zg_bs_nav_mov_2_2958934011 (DVD)

DVDPlanet / Deep Discount

Known by many for their bad customer service, they often make up for it with their lower prices on a lot of their items. This and they routinely run sales specifically for anime.

http://www.dvdplanet.com/Pages/Search/Category.aspx?ec=42000

http://www.deepdiscount.com/index.cfm

I highly suggest when you order from them to only order in stock items, and not ones that are backordered. Save yourself the displeasure of having to deal with the headaches. And patience is a must with these sites.

Cheapassgamer

Maybe you will find something here on our own forums! We have a thread dedicated specifically to Anime and Manga for sale from fellow Cags.

That Baccano isn't the same expensive set. The original release was the super expensive set which has been discontinued for awhile, and then they came out with this cheaper set awhile ago, although it was still $60 when it came out. Yeah Aniplex, "cheaper". They were even so proud advertising it when they re-released it under this "cheaper" release. :p
This is the version which I got from rightstuf 2 years ago

I think somewhere in the deep recesses of this thread was where I first heard about the sr212s Seiki region free blu ray player. The sears website said the nearest one to me was 164 miles away. I get an hour away from there while working and almost went to get it but thought I'd try my local store to see if maybe they could get it for me. They had some of the shelves. I tested  my Ghibli steelbooks and it works awesome.

To the point, are there many differences in region 1 and 2 releases? I want The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. It's crazy expensive for the US release and only 15$ for the UK version.

You guys know that that Baccano Blu-ray set is an upscale, right?
Yeah, I just looked it up after you said that. I saw a few screens and it seems decent but it's hard justify a $40 price tag for an upscale. I decided to pass on it for now.

I have the same player and it all really depends on if Manga messes with the release. I so far am fine with the Blue Exorcist set that I got from them. They even include both the karaoke and the translated lyrics in the opening/ending themes which is a nice touch. Overall, I highly doubt it's any different from the American release. I don't have $140 lying around to go and compare them. :p

Day 11

The most significant difference between region A/1 and B/2 is that Japan doesn't fall under region B.  So companies like MVM and Manga Entertainment are free to price things lower than Aniplex USA because they can do so without the dreaded fear of ... REVERSE IMPORTATION.  Sometimes though, it's just a matter of something being out of print in the US and not in the UK (things like TGWLTT and Never Say Never Again).

The best advice i can give is to do research for disc reviews before buying anything.  Sometimes it's an easy choice because it's not available here (Zulu, Castle of Cagliostro, German release of Howard the Duck), or because the price is so much cheaper (Any title released by Aniplex) .  Other times it's a lot less clear.  For example, you'll find a number of places with outdated information about how the UK version of T2 is the best version available, or how The Fog isn't available in the US, but that is no longer the case.

As for the things I've ordered from Amazon UK:

Cowboy Bebop

Madoka Magica

Bakemonogatari

Nisemonogatari

Blue Exorcist

Castle of Cagliostro

Gyo dvd

Scanners

Never Say Never Again

Zulu

Hyperdrive dvd

Tempted on the Tenchi sets (except for GXP which was just okay IMO). How are the other shows in comparison to Tenchi Muyo? I remember enjoying it on Adult Swim years ago until they stopped after two episodes of Tenchi Universe.

I am on the fence this week. They have FMA Brotherhood on Blu Ray OR DVD for $55 with FREE Shipping, but the $5 off $35+ is still active til Sunday and I haven't used it yet. So I am considering whether or not $50 is worth it for the whole series (sans OVA and movie).

Whatever you do, do not get Tenchi in Tokyo. Definitely get Tenchi Universe, but Tokyo is the cursed offspring of Universe, and even though Universe is a spinoff it was still well done, but a spinoff of a spinoff in Tokyo, it was truly just god awful. Not just from a story standpoint, but the animation is all screwed up too as they seemed to animate with the entire standing on their heads, and using their feet.

Ryo Ohki is essentially series 3, but it was produced a bit after the original OVA series which contains series 1 and 2.

GXP is a spinoff, but still part of the same universe (relatively speaking that is) as Tenchi, and you'll see why if you watch it further.

Tenchi Universe is a complete retelling of the Tenchi Universe story, so you may or may not enjoy it better if you watch the original OVA series first because it basically retools, and messes with a lot of the characters' storylines, and mixes plotlines with one another, but did a pretty good job to make it still interesting.

Tenchi in Tokyo...moving on.

Tenchi Muyo movies, has a combination of both movies to the OVA series, and the Universe spinoffs.

Here's generally how you should separate the series out for the ones on sale for today,

Original series:

Tenchi Muyo: OVA Series DVD/Blu-ray Collection (Hyb)

Tenchi Muyo Ryo Ohki DVD Complete Collection (Hyb) - Anime Classics

Spinoffs:

Tenchi Muyo GXP DVD Complete Series (Hyb) - S.A.V.E. Edition

Alternate Universe Spinoffs:

Tenchi Muyo: Universe TV Series DVD Complete Series (Hyb)

Tenchi Muyo: Tenchi in Tokyo DVD Complete Series (Hyb)

Movies:

Tenchi Muyo: Movies DVD/Blu-ray Collection (Hyb) Limited Edition

I watched most of these series on Toonami... but I remember liking the OVA series and Universe only. The first two movies are pretty good too. The newer ovas looked meh (saw a few episodes) and Tenchi in Tokyo is just bleh. (Solid one word reviews)

I actually enjoyed series 3, but it definitely had a different feel to it considering it was produced almost a decade after series 2 ended, but I actually thought it did pretty well for such a long layoff, although it seemed to move really quick with filling the first couple of episodes than they had the entire first two series. You may have been better off just finish watching series 3 to the end, and then see if that will make a difference, because I'll tell ya now, it's a doozy! :D

Tenchi Universe is a complete retelling of the Tenchi Universe story,
:)

Tenchi Muyo movies, has a combination of both movies to the OVA series, and the Universe spinoffs.
Actually, Movie 2 is canon with the light novels while only 1 and 3 are canon with Universe.

Movie 1 is the only one worth anything anyway.

Most people's problem with OAV3 are with the attention to the storyline. The Misao story was interesting, but it shunted the Tokimi arc to the end when OAV3's whole purpose was to continue that story.

Well, that and what they did to Tenchi's mom. And basically how they handled new characters Noike and
Tenchi's older sister.

Does that Tenchi OVA listing have an outer box similar to the one for the movies, or is it like Tenchi Universe/Tenchi in Tokyo where it has a single case?

I'm kinda skeptical if it is the boxed version since, to my knowledge, that version is supposed to be OOP and OOS, as evidenced by the Amazon listing.

Dunno how OOP it is since the FYE and Best Buy near me has multiple copies.

EDIT: DVD Price Search, DVD Empire/Planet, and Price Grabber all have only 1 listing for the FUNimation version. Walmart has it for $44.

Just found out that there was another listing for the LE version on Rightstuf that doesn't show up on their search engine, which I assume would be the boxed version. Not sure if my BB has it, but it'd be nice if they could pricematch TRSI so I can get the boxed set for ~$30 :/

I agree with everything said on the Tenchi's. The OAV are worth it, along with movie 1. I didn't like movie 2, but I also know people who did. Universe is decent -- doesn't really match the OAV, but it's not too bad. Tokyo and movie 3 are both slow and boring. Never watched GXP.

Edit: I did buy Tokyo from gohastings because it was cheap, awhile back, thinking I'd watch it again now that it's been a decade since I saw it. But I don't think I will any more.

I would love to get the FUNi Universe boxset to upgrade from my Geneon set, but that coverart is just...gah. Who at FUNimation thought that would be good?

I'm surprised they haven't include the Milos movie or the Fullmetal Alchemist OVAs/OAVs/HMOs.

Thanks for the feedback on Tenchi. It's a shame that Tokyo is looked so down upon. Is it at least better than GXP?  I was liking it until it was like they ran out of ideas once there was that one reunion episode.

I noticed Rightstuf still has blind boxes available for those who are short of the $50 minimum for free shipping. I'll probably get a $1 and $5 blind box to reach that if tomorrow's selection is lame. I just hope I don't get Angelic Layer again (already got it twice from past blind boxes). I wouldn't mind another $5 Voltron box set though.

Let's just say this: One episode has the gang fight a giant purple cell phone monster while the main bad guy is beaten by hugging.

The 12 days has so far been pretty meh. There are a few items I want to get but a lot of what is listed I picked up last year.

Anyways speaking of Tenchi, has anyone seen the War in Geminar series? Supposedly the story involves Tenchi's son.
Also the Tenchi Ova's, I know only geneon released the 3rd Ryo oh-ki set of episodes. Did anyone else even release them or are we still stuck on 12 episodes plus 2-3 specials

Sounds like a blast. At least it doesn't have attempts at bestiality like GXP had and rice worshipers like Samurai 7.

Yeah, I went there. Don't let the trailers fool you and avoid buying Samurai 7. It's like the spam sketch in Monty Python but with rice. Giant robots and rice. There's even a song about rice. It's not even suppose to be a comedy. Worst anime that the new Toonami has aired so far.

There's actually something else behind that, so I'm just guessing you haven't watched that far yet. :p

Plus, it's anime. Unless he's trying to do it with a horse, like an actual horse, I wouldn't count that as beastiality.

I am still debating $50 for the whole Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood series on Blu-Ray. No OVAs or movie, just the TV series...Amazon.

I bought all of the parts individually, so stop your debating and buy it already. I paid way more than $50. =|

As for the movie (Milos) and OVAs, they both are not needed for the full Brotherhood experience. The movie is pretty bad and it uses a slightly different animation style compared to Brotherhood. IMHO, I felt it just a cheap cash in on the FMA train after the new anime stopped airing.

As for the OVA's, they were originally included in the Japanese DVD/Blu release of Brotherhood, but Funimation decided to remove all of them just to have them all onto it's own release (FMA money train!). The OVA's are worth it but only for cheap as you'll be done with it just an hour (or less).

I actually like my Parts 1-5 better though, and the postcards were nice. ;D
This is Funi, though. On the one hand, Samurai Champloo being $20 and change and FMA:Brotherhood being $27 and change for each half at this point is a heck of a deal. Going to Bluray.com, the pricing trend showed that they tend to hover around $35-40 usually.

War on Geminar actually stars Tenchi's half-brother, not his son.

As for your second question, I am a little confused. Geneon/Pioneer released the first 2 OAVs consisting of the first 12/13 episodes (depending on whether you consider the post-Clay slideshow bonus a full episode or not). OAV3 was released by FUNimation years ago.

Unless you mean the Mihoshi Special and Pretty Sammy stuff, in which case FUNi did not license them.

Day 13

So FMA Brotherhood is a good deal then? I thought of looking it up out of the blue and the price seemed to be pretty good, which led me to search CAG for an anime deals thread, and here I am.

I haven't watched hardly any anime so I'm not familiar with pricing or anything. I just really enjoyed FMA on adult swim and thought I'd try Brotherhood since it sticks to the manga, I hear.

Any ideas on how long that price will last on amazon? I wonder if I'll have time to send in my trade-in and buy the stuff with credit. That $20 Samurai Shamploo also looks like it could be good. Always wanted to watch that.

I wish there was a bigger anime trading scene here - I checked the master trade list for anime and it is dead as a door nail. I have a Soul Eater complete Blu that I would have liked to trade for something I haven't watched. Soul Eater and FMA is about the only stuff I have watched.

The Amazon sales are until the end of the year, so the 31st.

People may not want to see further with her revelation and be too creeped out and stop watching. But yeah it's anime so who knows? I think Sword Art Online is way creepier.

For a while, I thought she was a cat. Ironically, I thought Excel's dog in Excel Saga was a cat as well.

I decided to pass on Milos since there are so many negative reviews. Since I didn't finish Brotherhood, I'd feel bad about watching the OVA ahead of time. Plus I get the feeling Funimation will have a two pack for both series' OVAs in the future.

Yeah my bad with the Tenchi half brother but. Anyways is the show any good? I only recently heard about it when I saw the Blu rays for sale at Otakon.

As for the Tenchi Ova question, I missed it but Squarehard answered it for me. The Tenchi OVA collection captured the first 13 episodes, while the Tenchi Ryo ohki collection captured episodes 14-20.

I think at one point Geneon released the third Ova ( episode 13-20) but they went bankrupt shortly after. I wasn't aware that Funi ( or pioneer, I'm bad with what companies own what) released the third ova series.

As for the mihoshi special and the pretty Sammy special, i am not sure if it ever was released stateside.

I think you may be getting the releases confused from Geneon because all of the series are actually named "Ryo-Ohki" respectively, but Geneon only had the rights to the original OVA series, and they also released Universe, as well as the movies which includes Mihoshi/Pretty Sammy specials. The company was in hot water by the time Ryo-Ohki 3 was being made, so it was never released by Pioneer/Geneon.

As for War on Geminar,
it's a great show, but it will feel very different from the Tenchi series. There are numerous references to the original OVA series here and there, but it has it's own plot, and it's pretty developed. As many has already mentioned, this series does have quite a bit of ecchi, and it certainly plays on that fact. I actually enjoyed the environment that was created in the show, and it definitely has a very different feel fr than the other Tenchi series, so don't go in expecting Tenchi feel just because it's a spinoff. They may be half-brothers, but based fairly loosely, and even at the end doesn't explain much about it, so don't put all your faith into that explaining the show.

The series is 13 episodes, but each episode is 45 mins, so it's basically equates out to a 26 episode series as far as length is concerned, and there's quite a bit of content packed into each episode. There is however a quick shift in tone as the series goes on though, so just kind of get prepared for it, although the series kind of prepares you for it. The latter portion of the series starts to get a little convoluted though, and kind of complicated, much like how many of the Tenchi series tend to do, so you shouldn't be caught too far off guard, although there are some plot points, and character backgrounds that leave you going "What?" at the end.

As for the mihoshi special and the pretty Sammy special, i am not sure if it ever was released stateside.

So, I just sold a copy of Rosario+Vampire Season 1 on eBay. The feedback the buyer left? "Great, my granddaughter will love it."

...I have no idea how to react to that. Either her granddaughter is awesome or there will be one horrified grandma.

Hopefully his/her granddaughter is a 26 year old otaku who is into harems.

You may also want to send them a courtesy email though to find out how old she is, and if she is into anime.

I've seen people leave feedback for stupid stuff like this before, so couldn't hurt to make sure.
