Another Death in the Family
I don't know, all 3 of my old roommates had XBox's, all of which are still in operation today. On the other hand, my PS2, and one of my roommate's PS2's both died within 2 years of purchase. I won't condemn Sony consoles as a whole as my PS1 is still going strong but the PS2 was a piece of garbage.

As for Nintendo consoles, the only one that ever failed me was my NES (typical connector issues). My SNES, N64, about 10 various Gameboys, and DS have all held up extremely well.
Ever since early 2002 my PS2 has been going strong, so who knows....

But if you have DRE's on a PS2 you should seriously try a lens cleaner. Mine kept doing that with just about every game, and then I used a lens cleaner and like magic, I had no problems at all to this point...
to quote homer simpson after getting a crayon hammered back into his nose:
"extended warranty, how can I lose ?"

For a $400.00 investment microsoft should stand by its product, not make its customer pay for its faulty machine that cannot even last an entire year.

just my 2 cents
Yeah, and in a perfect world cars would never break down, all electronics would last forever, and mass production wouldn't mean that a certain percentage of machines are going to end up having problems.

But it is the way it is. And most of us have something called common sense and KNOW that expensive electronics should be covered by an extended warranty and launch systems always have problems in the first 6 months. It amazes me how stubborn people on this forum are with their money - I realize its Cheap Ass Gamer, but if you're going to buy a $400 system, why WOULDN'T you want to spend less NOW for an extended warranty as opposed to either having to pay MS $140 + to fix your system or buy a whole new one?

I agre MMN, and even if your console has no problems in the year, do what I'm doing and use the warranty anyway to get a new piece of hardware!

It's all about how you think ppl... just think this way

premium != $399, it is really $448
core != $299, it's $348

It might be true that MS could probably done a better job in terms of designing to at least lower the defective rate.... But let's just say if 360 was such a nice built, low defective system. The price is probably going to be higher than the current 399 and 299 anyways. Longer testing, better quality = higher cost.

So people... just remember premium is $448+ tax! $448!

Personally I live in the old era, I have never purchased warranty for anything and NOTHING failed me so far to-date, I hope 360 is not the first one (knocking on wood)

I would prefer a higher cost 360 but a better built system, because I hate to deal with breaking down, packing and send-in stuff. And I absolutly HATE to have something I bought for 400 bux, nice looking 360 breaking down after 3 months and I get some refurbish unit. (yes I am weird, I generally stay away from used stuff unless necessary)

Eh I guess it's all about how you handle money and look at things. I look at it as, if someone came up to me a year after the 360 came out and said, "I'll give you a brandnew 360 for your old one, just throw in 40.00." I'd be all for it. Using money for the warranty wasn't a big deal, I just worked an extra half day with my dad, 4 hours later and there is the money.

During the school year it also gave me a lot of peace of mind with everyone touching my 360 in the dorm and such.

Personally, if I knew there would be a flat, massive repair charge of $129, I certainly would have bought the EW. But MS didn't say up front that they'd be too lazy to actually diagnose problems and would charge the same amount regardless of whether the problem was caused by a faulty fan or fried GPU.

What are the warranty for those of you claimed you could get a new system replaced? Is it bestbuy's replacement plan? I am not talking about M$'s warranty.

common sense should tell you to not buy a product if the warrant is necessary.

your more than entitled to your opnion, but I should not have to invest 35% of the cost of the system just to protect it. that is highway robbery no matter if your a cheapass or not

So I guess I shouldn't buy a car then, right? What about something for a house, like a water heater? You wouldn't buy an extended warranty on that?

Some products should get extended warranties. A $100 MP3 player? Probably not. But a $400 game system that still doesn't have all the bugs worked out yet? What about a $3,500 1080P HDTV that has a 3 month factory warranty? You're telling me its not wise to protect that with a couple hundred dollar warranty? I don't LIKE the fact that expensive electronics cost me even more because I buy the warranties, but I sure do like the fact that I'm convered when they inevitably break.

first off on a house you buy insurance and not a warranty

secondly a $3500.oo hdtv better be made with quality

my whole point is quality a product should not have to need a warranty.
also 200/3500 is 5.7 % not 35%

Thirdly when a car has a bug or factory defect you get a factory recall and if you fall under the recall your car is fixed free of charge.

the bugs in the 360 are factory defects and glitches then a company should honnor its loyal consumer base by aknowledging its mistake and fixing the system. If you drop it then your warranty should apply, but if its a POS that is buggy because of manufacturer error then no one should have to pay for that.

Ok, followup:

I called Microsoft to try to get the ESP. They asked for the serail number and said I was past the deadline for that. I hung up and called again, same story.

Luckily, a friend who works at a gamestore PM'ed me. I told him the situation, and let me me swap my 360 with another unit, IF I bought the extended warentee. I did HAPPILY!

Now my new unit, I have played for about three-four hours total. I've experince three freezes. It this 'normal'? My unit is in a well ventilated area. What gives?

Karma?

Since this thread was resurrected, I'll say that I've had zero problems with my 360 for over a week. Bought an intercooler from outpost.com (14.99 shipped) just for fun. Glad I didn't send it in.
