My cell phone is very old and I'm considering a replacement.
I'm interested in a "smart phone" that will allow me to check CAG email and crap like that.

I read a few reviews of the Sidekick II and it seems pretty cool, but I was wondering if any CAGs own one and how your experience has been so far.

Thanks.

Oh come on, you know you really want a QD and join the NGage crew... it's got all the interent functions, and you can use a bluetooth keyboard with it (even though that's not CAG).....

As for the sidekick, most TMobile corporate stores have one that you can check out there. The two Manhattan corporate stores are:

170 Broadway
170 BROADWAY
NEW YORK, NY 10038
212-571-5077

and

Broadway & Astor
732 BROADWAY
NEW YORK, NY 10003
212-674-5377

Truthfully, I was torn between the QD and the Sidekick II. Sidekick II is good if you message a lot. The unlimited internet bumps the bill up a considerable amount ~35 AT. What swayed me to the QD was bluetooth, NGage arena (kinda) and it was only 80 bucks used at GS :) . But if you internet alot go with the sidekick II. It has a builtin phone so you can post and insert pictures of the "Chronicles of CAG" while you are on the road. Come to think of it get the Sidekick II, the QD is huge, by comparison its the XBOX of cell phones
My friend was looking at one, but it was kinda shitty. He went with the blackberry 7100t.
Its more durable, but out of the CAGrange, at least I would think so, 400-500, much different from 250 AR

I have the first one, and it's great especially if you're riding in a car for an extended period of time. I'm sure the second one is just as good, if not better.

My friend had the first design one for like 18 months. Said he loved it for sending messages, email, etc. but didn't care for it's abilities as a phone all that much.

I just bought a motorola mpx200 which is truly the cheap ass smartphone (mine was $200 unlocked off of ebay, if you get it from ATT then you can get it cheaper i think). So far I'm happy with it. It runs windows mobile 2002 so it has email and scheduling that will synchronize with outlook. It also has an SD slot that's perfect for the windows media player that it has.

Check out http://www.mpx200.org for more info on smartphones, unlocking, customizing, and the new mpx220. They also cover other smartphones.

Yes, that is the work of the lovely and talented, WhipSmartBanky.

I have a sidekick 1 and I like it.
There are some drawbacks though.
Where I live I get no signal and have to drive about 5 minutes to make calls longer then a few minutes, so make sure you live in an area that has a strong signal. My ericsson can hold a signal just fine but my sidekick I have to drive to get one.
For some reason, iI cannot stay connected to the cag message boards. its like it doesnt support cookies or whatever this site uses to store your log in data. I have no trouble with other websites though.
So maybe goto tmobile and try to log in and post with a sidekickat the store.
Its great for web browsing and aim and email, but i rarely use it as a phone. Aside from the signal problem, it functions adequately as a phone.
As far as the sidekick 2, I read they are improving on it so anything that improves the way it is now has to be good. Its a great phone aside from the few tiny problems.

So if you get a basic plan, do you have unlimited interenet access? And to get the internet access, you need a Wi-Fi connection in the area, right?

$40 - 600 anytime minutes unlimted nights and weekengs
$20 - unlimtited internet/IM/email
total = $60 a month
You can also get a 300 minute phone plan for $30 a month (instead of the $40 plan)

No, this device does not use wi-fi.

I think I might pull the trigger today.

Just found out my friends brother has one, and I will likely be seeing him Friday...Looks like I'll get that test drive that I was hoping for.

I thought the IM/email/internet services were 30 bucks a month?
It's $20. And just like Cheapy said a basic phone plan is $40. So $60+ is too much for me.
Can I get a linky that says it's 20?

you may also want to check out the nokia 3300.. its what i've got and i love it! its great for internet and email / test messages, and has a fully intigrated keyboard.. also doesnt feel like a brick in your pocket as the ngage does.. (also gota love the mp3 playback :) )

Wait, if it doesn't use Wi-Fi, then how does it get internet access?
Through the cellphone. Its actually suppose to be faster than 56K.
my friend has a sidekick I, he mostly uses it to look at porn and stuff at school, so his load tiems are a little slower cuz they are mostly pictures.. but it usualy is right on part with 56k, OCASSIONALY a little bit faster.. but usualy right around there.. either way, its pretty speedy for a cell phone!

I'm currently using a Sidekick 1

CONS:
Weak Signal
You have to pay for ringtones (unless your a developer)
Javascript not supported.
Problems viewing the CAG site (problem with cookies, perhaps?)
Speaker isn't loud
My friend has broken several phones.
Cannot have a screensaver/wallpaper
Camera quality isn't good
Custom ringtones have to be under 100k and 15 seconds long.

PROS:
Unlimmited Internet (Though it does feel a bit slower than 56k)
AIM
Unlimmited Text (If you purchase internet plan)
Unlimmited Email
You can multitask between applications as a webpage loads.

Overall the Sidekick 1 is pretty convenient whenever you are bored to the point of suicide. Time flies whenever I use this at school. Multitasking between applications will relieve the frustration of the internet speed. To get custom ringtones u have to be a developer and hook up the phone to the computer via USB cable.

I registered an account with Textamerica and I email pictures to the moblog.

NOTE: The 2nd picture on the top row is not a Sidekick.
The Sidekick 2 is suppose to have fixed a lot of the problems you listed.
Yeah I know, but its not worth spending any more money for an upgrade.

Does this also not require Wi-Fi to access the internet?

Psh, my phone is ancient compared to that. Hell, that thing probably has a phone book that'll store names...
Well, I ordered it last night.
I'll let you know how it is when it arrives.
Yes, please do, I'm starting to really want this thing.
