wow! if your limit is 800 and under, you have unlimited choices for your laptop. check out these reviews (and suggestions) by cnet or by pc magazine to get a good indication of what you need, the best bang for your buck and the quality of the machines:

Dell always has great deals. I got a steal for my XPS M140 laptop that I only use to take notes in class and such.
You can usually grab a functional laptop from them for 5-600, which can get you online and perform the basics. Oh, and I think if you get a CD Burner, it's also a DVD burner. I don't think you can choose just a CD burner. I might be wrong though.
Just keep an eye on slickdeals, people usually post up configurations and coupon codes that et on the front page every few hours or so.
Good luck!

I found two worth noting at Best Buy, a Gateway/$650 and HP/$800. The sale price ends tomorrow night. Best part is, no rebates! And both notebooks can burn DVDs as well as CDs:

In case you're interested, I'm actually trying to sell my laptop. I've had it about a year, but I've hardly used it (which is why I'm now looking to sell it). It's a Dell Inspiron 6000 with the following specs:

Pentium M Processor 730 1.60 GHz/2MB Cache/533MHz FSB
512MB PC4200 Dual-Channel DDR2 SDRAM
128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X300 (dedicated memory)
40GB 5400RPM Hard Drive w/8MB Cache
24X CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive
15.4" Widescreen WXGA LCD Screen (perfect, w/NO burnt out pixels)
Internal 10/100 Network Adapter & 56K v.92 Modem
Internal Intel 802.11g Wireless Adapter
96 WHr 12 Cell Primary Battery with Subwoofer
I/O Ports: 4x Hi-Speed USB 2.0, 1x IEEE1394 Firewire/iLink, VGA, DVI, S-Video TV-Out, Headphone/Microphone, Port Replicator
Windows XP Media Center Edition w/Service Pack 2

It's in perfect condition, both mechanically and cosmetically. I just formatted and reinstalled Windows & applied all the updates. I paid around $1000 for it about a year ago. I'd like to get around $800 for it but I'd be willing to consider trade/cash combinations as well.

the basics i was looking for ae 1.8 processor or higher at least a gig of ram and an 80 gig or more hard drive

Why didn't you tell us this in your original post???:) Now, all that work in posting the Best Buy deal was all for nothing.

Listen up people. If you know what you want, let us in on it from the beginning!:) Okay? lol. Giving us as much info as possible would prevent the same questions from being asked over and over again and to prevent posting of deals that aren't what you're looking for.:)

sorry ur right i should have, those were baseline things i found on a dell i could get for 950 i was just trying to see if you guys could do any better

LOL, you think your laptop only depreciated $200 in a year?

Office Depot is selling the Gateway Notebook for $799.99 after mail-in-rebate and Best Buy has it for the same price, but no mail-in-rebate. Does anybody know if OD would price match and still offer the MIR??

This would make the final price $650. Sounds too good to be true, but I wonder...
