Any deceptively simple games to avoid for DS?

CAGiversary!
Some time this weekend I will probably be picking up a DS Lite since I don't believe there will be a price drop once the DSi is released, and my girlfriend will need some entertainment when she leaves for a job interview in another city next week. I was just wondering if there were any games that anyone here got that ended up being much "kiddier" or simpler than you expected. I'm going to probably get some RPGs eventually, a couple platformers, and some puzzle games, and I've been a little concerned that some of the puzzle games we are interested in may be simpler than I'd like (i.e. Mystery Case Files: Millionheir).

Has any had any experience with this? Or are most of the games challenging enough to provide sufficient entertaining to people in their 20s?

I think any game with a Z you can actively avoid... but any title that I've seen discussed here are quality titles, and that includes millionheir. it's a I Spy game so see if it's interesting. watch some videos.

there's plenty of titles to choose from.

Don't get the Nancy Drew game about the amusement park. I love mysteries, but the story was lame with little interactivity other than repetitive mini-games that were too easy, pointless, and in no way related to the story.

You must, must, MUST get Professor Layton and the Curious Village. It was my GOTY for 2008. The puzzles are awesome, the music is excellent, and the art style of the game is pretty neat.

Thanks for all the input so far!

I've heard nothing but good things about Professor Layton and the Curious Village, but the lack of replay value makes me hesitant to pay full price for it. Once you solve a puzzle, there really isn't any going back to it, right? I know there are something like 120 puzzles with 28 downloadable puzzles, as well, but I'd feel weird paying $30 for a game that I knew I couldn't really play again once I finished it. If I can find it for around $20, I'll definitely pick it up, though. It sounds a little more deep than Millionheir (though Millionheir has randomly generated puzzles, so I think that adds some value).

And after reading the product description for Rocket Slime, I can't help but feel a little skeptical, though reading the IGN review makes me feel better about it. It sounds silly, but fun (which makes for a perfect portable game). If I see it, and especially for that price, then it will be very tempting. I hadn't even thought of this game before, so thanks for mentioning it! Hearing about new, quality games for the DS is making me much less apprehensive about buying it.

I'll make sure to stay away from the Nancy Drew game and anything that is "Imagine" or that ends with a Z replacing an S.

Touchmaster 1 & 2 are good if you like bar games and can pick them up for cheap. I play touchmaster frequently when I have a few spare minutes here and there.

I bought Henry Hatsworth for myself. My girlfriend picked it up and won't stop playing it. Simple puzzle and platforming mechanics combine to make one hell of a game. So going along the lines of puzzle games, I'd recommend that.

This might not be along the same vein as Professor Layton or Rocket Slime. But from my experience, Space Invaders Extreme has given me the most value and entertainment from my $20 (now only $9.99 at Gamestop).

I've spent 160 hrs on the DS version and 30ish on the PSP one. That might just be me, but the game is such a good way to kill time. It's your tried and true Space Invaders and Galaga-type games mashed into one. It throws in crazy effects and awesome music that a lot of remakes like to do nowadays.

This is a bit odd. I thought Rocket Slime was exactly what the OP was describing. Sure it was fun, but it was very simple and easy. I would say it was more of a challenge to lose a tank battle than to win.

I would suggest looking for a cheap copy of the original Puzzle Quest:Challenge of the Warlords. You can get it anytime you want from Goozex for 250 points

If you want an annoyingly frustrating challenge, you can upgrade to Galactrix :)

Sure, Rocket Slime is on the easy side, but it's fairly deep and a LOT of fun.

Well the games my wife plays are her DS:
Mystery Case Files: Millionheir
Professor Layton
Brain Age 1 & 2
Puzzle Quest
Zelda

By far she put the most time into Crosswords DS. They have an incredible amount of puzzles in this game. Not just crosswords, it also has word search and anagrams.

My fav DS game is Picross DS, I played the Mario Picross on the original Gameboy and this new DS game confirms it as the best puzzle series ever, Also the puzzles in Layton are a good difficulty, seems a bit random if the puzzle will be hard or easy but overall good.

Clubhouse Games has an nice selection of card and board/puzzle games. It's also multiplayer. It's my favorite time killing game.
