Any emo CAGers?
Emo died when MTV called it hip.
Rites of Spring and Dag Nasty sent me an email to tell you that it died in the mid-to-late 90's, when, much like Victory-style Hardcore, its popularity put it on the next stepping stone to consumer culture.

Man, 'yall "true to the cause" motherfuckers sure don't like to shoulder the blame for anything, do ya?

The difference between emo now and then boils down to the aesthetic choices emo kids make: now it's cool to slather yourself in Tim Burton cartoon characters, skinny ties, and fingerless gloves.
much like Victory-style Hardcore
That stuff got really old quick. Like most of the Straight Edge vegan rock of it's time.

Some bands were ok, but Victory signed alot of bands that sounded alike, and what was the deal with vegancore on vinyl?

It had to be done...............

I don't even like the original emo, to be honest.

I like At the Drive-In, but only because they're more on the prog-rock / experimental side of the fence.
Well if that's the case, I was at the bar last Wednesday and a dude hurled and cried telling this guy he loved him. He is WAYYYY EMO then.
Hey it's the 2000's. Isn't it alright for 2...4 dude to make out with each other?

My drummer toured with a punk/rock band called The Commercials from PA and they played with At the Drive In. Even that is really on the end of the EMO era, good band. Check out Hum. That album is Downward is Heavenward or You'd prefer an astronaut. They were labeled geek rock and they are darn good.

hardcore-zilla was always one of my favorite photoshops. Can't recall where a stack of those would be located online (hint, hint).

Vegan-core started around the era of Vegan Reich, Shelter, and all those other hippie bands - several years before Victory became a household name.

I didn't dislike Victory-style hardcore, but it was something I thought of in the other "fat kid metal shirts" thread: most obscenely obsese scene kids I saw were hardcore kids. Cargo pants and a basketball jersey over a white shirt was easy to pull off; OTOH, fat kids + stretch jeans = bad times all around, and although I've seen a few fat-ass crusties, they amount of "Amebix" patches they need on their jeans jackets became unwieldy in terms of cost.

Waay, OT, I 'spose, but something I was thinking about anyway.

The OP almost seems as if its meant to be a joke or something. I suppose it's probably not though. Anyway, about emo fashion, it seems to vary. I used to think those kids who bought everything from Goodwill were emo, but now I guess it's probably different. I never really listened to emo (when it was apparently good, nor now), and I've never been interested in it.

CitizenB's post was sarcastic...
I totally agree. Just be yourself, don't try to fall into a trend, a fad, or a crowd, you'll just be a walking cliche. The only reason to dress a certain way like that is unless you want people to preconceive all kinds of things about you just by looking at you. If that sounds good, then cool.

What did his Uncle do to him? wow...............
Fed him, by the looks of things.

Now, I can deal with the "emo" look, as goofy as it is. I dressed dreadfully from 14-25, give or take, so you know what they say about glass houses and all that. No matter that, I can't stand the "cry for the camera" look. I can't stand people posturing for a camera like that, and half the time, they look more like their uncle's trying to tease their butthole with his ring finger than they do upset or emotional.

And by the way, with regards to the origins of emo, there really wasn't much "emo" in the early 90's - Deep Elm didn't exist until 1995 or so, IIRC. Now, of course you had Jawbreaker, Cringer, and shit like that and the late Dischord stuff. It was, as far as I recall, just "college rock" at the time.

I don't really recall Jawbreaker being considered "emo" until well after Jets to Brazil (that's their other band, right?) became massively popular in the late 90's. It wasn't really a phrase bandied about until that time.
Yeah I know this will probably turn all anti-emo, but are there any other CAGers who are emo? I've been skateboarding for ~10 years now and am working on sponsorships and whatnot. Right now I'm filming a shop video and a few other video parts, and basically I realized that I need to dress more like a skater to make the video look more legit. I usually dress preppy and if you saw me on the street you would not think I skate, its funny, I'll go to a skatepark in a button down and outskate the people wearing skate clothes, the look on their faces is priceless. I decided I'd try dressing emo for a bit and see how that worked, mostly because everytime I see kids skating they're always in tight pants, I figured it was just a fad but I wanted to see how skating in tight pants were. I got myself a few pairs and realized they are really comfortable and awesome for skating. So now that some time's gone by I think I'm going emo, At first friends thought it was funny and something totally random which they would expect from me, but now I'm getting serious about it.
Why would you care what they think, if you can skate why should you care what the think? And even if you can't tell them to fuck off. I mean you really should be yourself, if you suddenly like tight pants that's fine, but remember you have

to follow the crowd or be yourself... Whats is gonna be?
Why bother posting if you're only going to say a word or two in every thread? It's just a waste of space.
I feel that the word "boring" sums up my feelings adequately.
I wish my lawn was EMO so it would cut itself.
Zero points for stealing phrases from T-shirts.

So thats an "emo". I always heard of people being emo, but I never new what that was. I remember back in high school two ashooles in my division that were like that. I just thought they were gay. This one guy was sort of fat freshman year in my division, senior year the guy was skinny as f*k.
A bunch of losers.

God damned emos went and made life even more difficult for people with actually issues with depression. fuck them all, set thier fucking whiny bitching asses on fire, and then make it so the actual depressed people will be noticed so they can go get help, rather than just being called "faggy little emos".

Life sucks enough with actual depression, why do these whiny little fuctards have to try and mimic that as well?

This is the angriest post I have ever seen from you, JSweeney, the voice of reason. Be proud.

I just read through this whole thread hoping for a regalsin post.

I'm so disappointed. How are we supposed to figure it out without his input?

This is one of those situations where thanks to the lack of tone in writing leads me to wonder what the intent is... is it an insult, or an accolade?
I know if Dead of Knight said it right to me, I'd know what was meant. As is, I'm not so sure. :D

(Wow. Am I still actually a voice of reason?)
any emo CAGs? *coughRoufusscough* fuck emos
It only took 24 posts too.

I'm quite sad by this... maybe I should change my custom title back :(

I don't know how I missed this thread but... it scares me. This whole thread. I don't really have anything to add.
