Any Rochester NY CAG's?

I'm in Rochester occasionally to visit my sister, it's not too bad. More jobs moving there than Buffalo. One thing to try is Nick Tahoes garbage plate. It may be the least healthiest thing I've ever seen. One of my roomates from college swore by them. And they have a decent AHL hockey team in the Amerks (I get to watch them in the playoffs Friday at HSBC here), baseball with the Red Wings, and the Knighthawks are a pretty good lacrosse team. Gaming wise, with RIT there, I would assume it's not too bad.

When the revitalization of WNY happens it'll be a great day... especially Buffalo :D . From my limited knowledge of Rochester, it has all the major chains, as far as independent guys I can't recall any off hand.
if its at all possible...dont move to rochester!
whats wrong with rochester? I was born and raised there. Have been away for about ten years now. I know a lot has changed. I love snow too.

My first job out of college was in Rochester. I worked at WHEC-TV (NBC affiliate, was owned by Viacom at the time.) and only remember 2 independent game stores. Neither was really exceptional and only one imported any games at all and even then the amount was few and far between. Considering I moved out of there in 1994 I would be very surprised if either one of them are still in business.

Oh and nevermind about Nick Tahoes garbage plate. The best unhealthy food in Rochester is Bathtub Billy's. I truly miss his buffalo hot fries and wings. They were/are the best I've ever had and the Giordano brothers are both nice guys.

My gf is from Ra-cha-cha as she calls it and having been there numerous times in the last 5 years (some of my boys from High School went to college out there) I've learned a couple things:

1. The accent is horrible, but you'll get used to it in 2 years. You'll know it when you hear it.
3. Bathtub Billy's and Nick Tahoe's are great, but don't forget Jay's Diner (West Henrietta Rd., founded by the brother of the Nick Tahoe's owner) and Dinosaur Bar-B-Q.
4. Abbot's. This stuff is killer. Ask and you will know what all the hoopla is about.
5. Lake effect snow. 12 inches daily is the norm, I reckon.
6. Did I mention the accents?
7. Video game stores: you've got a couple of nice malls in the area: Marketplace, Greece Ridge, and Victor. In my experience, Victor Mall is pricey, Marketplace has poor selection, and Greece Ridge has been where I've gotten the best deals. There's a CC in it, too, which helps. Plus, you'll find your bevy of FYE's, Gamestops, EB, and a Media Play I think further down on Ridge Road.
8. City economy: When people say Rochester, think Kodak and Xerox. Both have been in somewhat financial dire straits in the last decade or so, and numerous layoffs have spurred some malcontent in the city. However, as large, multi-national companies go, these two aren't awful for driving money into the city so be thankful that you'll at least have these companies to keep wages up and employment competitive (which in reality is a good a thing).
9. Enjoy High Falls and the Brewery.
10. If you are like me and frequently abuse your gullet and liver, try doubling up on Garbage Plates after a full night o' pounding Genny Lights. I guarantee you that you won't do that again for at least a week thereafter.

well said O-Dog. I have very fond memories of the food in Rochester. You left out Mark Pizza W/ a side of blue cheese. I am making the move from sunny North Carolina. Everyone thinks I am mad!

I'll be moving out to Rochester in a few months to go to RIT. O-Dog you make it sound like such a great place (except for the accents). I just hope I can adjust to the weather because lake effect snow is a huge change from sunny southern california :(

I have successfully recreated Nick Tahoe's Garbage Plates in my kitchen.
The sauce takes 3 hours to make.

Is Game Mania still around? It was on Mount Hope Ave, right next to a great sandwich place called DiBellas.

It is a huge change. Lake effect snow literally means that you can have a
coating of snow within hours that will:
-Hinder transportation. Driving in ice and snow is truly a science unto itself.
-Make walks across campus perilous. Walking in ice and snow sucks.
Don't schedule 8 o'clock labs on Fridays. Or 8 o'clock anything for that matter.
-Make girls not show a scrap of skin 6 months out of the year. Basically, your life at school will suck during winter but will make trips home for the
holidays ridiculously cooler. The difference between SoCal and everywhere else in the world is that in SoCal, even the moms (assuming they're truly women, of course) are hot. Like model hot, not just porn star hot (who are a dime a dozen in SoCal anyway). But come spring and summer when the girls start prancing in skirts again, all that sensory deprivation pays back a hundred fold. It'll be like going to a buffet after being on Survivor.
-Require that you spend easily between $300-$500 in winter gear if you
do not have any. You WILL need a parka, boots, gloves, scarf, hat, thermals, those little heat pack thingies, and tons of other things. Just to get to class. Wait until you have to shed all this stuff just so you can fit in your seat.
-Shaq-fu your car. Cars in Rochester are the dirtiest, must corroded
cars in the world outside of Buffalo. This is because of the salt used to melt the ice...it sucks, because it's hard to wash off. Salt will get on your
shoes, the bottoms of your pants, your dorm room, everywhere.
-Force you to learn how to ski. It's the only good thing about snow.
Sledding doesn't cut it because it's hard to look manly when it's just you and a bunch of guys but skiing or snowboarding is cool enough to be able to do regardless of the company.

Did I mention that snow sucks?

Cheapy, what's your recipe? And by golly why has this information not been made public?

Nothin like consuming a couple thousand calories all in one sitting...

Hey, Don't dis Rochester too much, I've only lived here about 20 years. Aside from the 100+ inches of snow each year it's not too bad.

NVM...googled it and found more information (including nutritional value) than I'd ever care to learn.

Cheapy, I'll see you on the heart transplant wait list.

Some people like 100+ inches of snow a year, I do and I don't even ski/snowboard.

Edit: also you shouldn't complain about snow unless you live in oswego, i've never been but they get unreal amounts of snow, usualy all at once.

speaking of Oswego, here are REAL pictures from the snow storm they had THIS year!!

I'm a Raachester native and I take offense to saying we have an accent. There's Waaater in a crick. Charlotte and Chili are supposed to be pronounced Shar-laat and Chie-lie. C'mon brah, give us a break.

Seriously, a cheap ass gaming option is taking the new ferry to Toronto, I'm sure there are many import stores there given their very large Asian immigrant population plus you get a nice exchange rate. Otherwise, check out Monroe Ave. or Park Ave for shopping. Is HO-RC Hobby still open, anyone? They used to have a lot of hard to find games and accessories.

And foodwise, you can't go wrong with Distillery wings. Cheapy will testify. And Gaymania closed a while back.

You're right...forgetting the Distillery is criminal. My bad.

In regards to the accent, tho, the one I'm referring to is subtler...it's the bastardization of the soft "a" sound, such as in the words accent, happen, apple, the names Allison, Ali, Amber, etc. It sounds almost as if natives throw in an extra "e" before the a, so that the weird "eaccent" "heappens" when they say "eapple." Just my impressions, and this is more the WNY accent than just the Ra-cha-cha one. You're right on the money tho with Shar-laat, etc. It's a slight nasalization of some phonics, best I can tell.

Park Ave in my experience has been pretty pricey. With all those faux-bistros, chocalatiers, etc., it's a mini-Rodeo drive or 5th Ave, WNY Ra-cha-cha style, with concordant snobs, snoots, and people who take 20 seconds to order a coffee. Just my bias, tho.

I live in Rochester...Irondequoit to be exact!!

For game stores I usually go to Game Craze on East Ridge Road. Most games they are $35 or less, and I know the people who work there so I get disounts some times.

But there are plenty of gamestores around here!!
As well as places to eat. Nick Tahoes definately is the best, and we also have Al's Stand Lemon Ice!!

Many sports teams too if you enjoy watching and playing sports like me!!

Wow, there are several local CAG's!

I live in Albion, which is about 30 miles West of Greece. Maybe a meetup in the future?

Uh-oh...my gf is from Brockport...and whenever she mentions Albion, she mentions something about the cabbage fields...
I went to college there.
Not a bad town...I hope you like snow!
RIT? Thats where my sister went.
-Make girls not show a scrap of skin 6 months out of the year.
GAH i never thought of it that way, O-Dog. *sniff* goodbye ladies... oh well at least my gf will be in syracuse. any advice on transport between syracuse and rochester seeing as i won't have a car.

those garbage plates look grub I tried to get one while I was up there in February but didnt manage to (couldnt find the damn place/was too tired to find it).

There's a Greyhound that makes the 'Cuse-Rachacha run twice daily, I think. For such a short distance (probably 2 hours or so, maybe more because it's a bus) it can't be that expensive. I think there are student discounts available and maybe other promotions for frequent users.

I've made the Albany-Rochester run a number of times and it's usually quite pleasant. If you've got a discman and some bomb CDs or a GBA or something you're set.

I'd consider buying a beater car or something if you're moving to Roch and going to RIT, its not a very "walkable" city unless you live downtown near Park/Alexander/Monroe/Goodman streets area.

So anyone know where Cheapy went to school? Rochester has RIT, plus the U of R, St. John Fisher, Nazareth, and Monroe Community, amongst others.

Cheapy, we don't mean to pry, but we're just curious.
U of R
Go Yellow Jackets!

Some of my best friends growing up just graduated from there. I have more ridiculous memories of drunken runs to the Pit at Wilson Common then I care to remember, and probably shelled many a keg's $10 refund into the Virtua-On that's there.

I've visited Colleges and Universities all over Upstate NY and can't think of many others that had underground tunnels for when there's 3 feet of snow outside.

Well Carousel isn't too bad, and you're only a little bit away from Pyramid Mall in Ithaca and Arnot Mall in Horseheads/Elmira.

On the whole, tho, you're right. Not much in Cortland.

There are a few cabbage fields that are pretty bad smelling. Thankfully I live nowhere near them.

I live in Rochester, its alrite but nothing too big for games....like tournys and stuff, and well all i've got around here is EB, BB, CC, GS, and CompUSA and FYe...hell, theres a lotta stores around here...just wish there was a Frys...

I go to RIT here, I think it isn't too bad, snow wasnt bad this year compared to last year. I'm really from IL but going as a student in college in Rochester. Well there are several hotties these days compared to past.. not just only rochester, but everywhere I noticed.
