I've shown off my collection before, but that was like 2 years ago. Got a big move coming up (every collector's nightmare) and decided to make a video before they're all boxed up and sent to the storage place. I really should get around to posting my games and systems here sometime.

I personally find guide collecting to be less stressful and cheaper than game collecting. Not always, though. I can think of about 5 guides I don't have and probably will never get because they go for crazy $$$ on eBay.

But what about all of you guys and gals? Post a pic or video! (especially if you have more than me!)

wow, amazing. I only have a handful of guides that I ever decided to keep. Though since you are a collector maybe you can help me find something i am looking for.

Prima put out a guide for Dreamcast Half-Life before the game was canceled and moved to PS2, have you seen it anytime recently? I have been trying to track one down lol.

I have only one of those, sorry.

Yeah, that's one of those guides that was pennied out once upon a time. Sucks when a cheapo guide someone got for free is being sold like that. If you're in no particular hurry, you can add a search to your ebay account for something like "half life guide -2 -playing" and with a little luck you'll get one for much less than $16 eventually.
I'm really curious as to what those five guides are.
Lufia: Fortress of Doom - one just ended at $115
Lufia II guide - see above.
Suikoden - I always, ALWAYS, get outbid on this one for

Oblivion Game of the Year Edition guide - dark cover, goes for $40 give or take $5. It'll be one of the last guides I track down.

It's actually really easy to find copies of that particular guide at Gamecrazy if you have one near you. They can even put one on order for you and get it shipped in from the nearest store. The guide is only $10 there.

I just checked the other day, actually, there's no more Oblivion GOTY guides left in the company.. as far as I could tell.

Uncharted, Lego Star Wars: Complete Saga
Sick part is I think I had all three of these at one point and I may still have the Uncharted guide around here someplace. But I always check values before I let stuff go out anymore, since almost everyone seems to do it these days.

No offense but no one is going to let a guide worth $40-100 go for $5 shipped just because they got it for a penny or cheap from BB/TRU/GS/wherever. I know I'm not alone on this, since I see a ton of 'better be a damn good offer' and 'good luck trying to get this from me' comments next to one time penny guides.

Good luck with the move and finding the guides you still need for your collection though.

Not trying to thread leach here but I have both version of the Oblivion guide if anyone is interested. Just figured id say something as I am not really a guide collector and seems you guys are. Hell I even have a semi wrapped collectors zelda twilight princess guide here as well if anyone would be interested in it.

WHAT!!!! That lufia guide is that expensive????? holy crap, HA got mine free brand new condition at this little baseball card shop as they didn't know how to charge for guides so they gave it to me with Lufia which I got from them complete in box for $30.

I don't collect guides but I did grab ones I found rare or cheap (pennied out) like Steel Batallion guide got 2 of em for .02 sold one for $50, or any/ALL of the guides Working Designs would release those were beautiful hard cover some leather bound, page markers included, gold leaf lined amazing those were.

I have a handful of guides for newer games and a bunch from old nes/snes (Lufia, Secret of Mana, etc).

you should also watch out for prices on your guides. they do go up in value but they also drop quickly. as someone mentioned, oblivion goty guides were worth a pretty penny. also, that lunar 2 eternal blue guide is worth $150 sealed. i sold one not that long ago.. it could easily go for $170-$180 if its sealed.

I remember your collection. Absolutely amazing. I only have 150-200 guides I think. Didn't you have like the entire PS1 run of RPG guides? I can't remember if it was you or some other CAG. I'm getting close.. only missing 10-15.

It's really getting hard to collect guides though. It seems like new guides go OOP fast and then start fetching some crazy amounts, ranging anywhere from $30-100.

Freakin awesome collection man. I have a tendency to collect guides before picking up the game, then buy the game super cheap.
what is your favorite guide you own?
The first Versus Book which was Street Fighter Alpha 2. Tons of pictures, strategies, artwork... The guide is written in like a 9 point font, which makes it feel even more packed with strategy. I remember paying $10 for it and taking it home. I wasn't even a big fan of Alpha 2 or anything. I got back in the game, played better, and years later can look back on SFA2 with pleasant memories of me kicking ass at the arcade.

Yeah the Lunar 2 guide has always been a weird one to follow. It was one of the first guides I can recall that were sold sealed. It may be seen as a dick move on the publisher's part, but the collector and eventual buyer got a guide that wasn't ripped or bent and was protected by plastic against scuffs. Also there were the stickers, free poster offer, not to mention the actual content wrapped in a hardcover with those classy bookmark ribbons. All for the then-astronomical price of $19.95!! No, screw YOU, Working Designs!!

I can't explain why any sane person would pay $60-90-180 for it, though. Maybe having this guide is a bit of a status symbol?

I did post my collection years ago, but it must have been someone else that made that "all PS1 RPG guides" claim. Right now I'm trying to decide if I should try to finish Nintendo Guides (missing about 45) or Sandwich Island (need about 35). I'm feeling Nintendo would be much more expensive, but Sandwich Island guides take up more shelf space.

Actually collecting them isn't that hard. If you're following penny drops in that other thread, then you can kind of see them flood eBay. Check pawn stores, thrift markets, used books stores. If you see video games at yard sales, ask if they have any guides for them. The guides are something almost all people have but they'd never put them out because they figure no one would buy them.
And I thought I was crazy for collecting guides, at least there's others out there =)
Why not post a picture?

its great to see people buy guides at a premium. been selling them at ridiculous prices all the time. guides are very collectible because they hardly ever reprint them unlike the games they are used on.

but like i said, do watch for their prices every now and then. i find it useful to just base the research by sequels and ports coming out cause usually it does trigger a spike on older and related items. theres plenty of guides that lost alot of value over the years cause a port more superior to the previous game came out. for me, it the guide reaches $100, i'll sell it in a heart beat :) but if you do enjoy your guides, theres no need to sell them. preserve them as they are.
