what is your favorite guide you own?
The first Versus Book which was Street Fighter Alpha 2. Tons of pictures, strategies, artwork... The guide is written in like a 9 point font, which makes it feel even more packed with strategy. I remember paying $10 for it and taking it home. I wasn't even a big fan of Alpha 2 or anything. I got back in the game, played better, and years later can look back on SFA2 with pleasant memories of me kicking ass at the arcade.
you should also watch out for prices on your guides. they do go up in value but they also drop quickly. as someone mentioned, oblivion goty guides were worth a pretty penny. also, that lunar 2 eternal blue guide is worth $150 sealed. i sold one not that long ago.. it could easily go for $170-$180 if its sealed.
Yeah the Lunar 2 guide has always been a weird one to follow. It was one of the first guides I can recall that were sold sealed. It may be seen as a dick move on the publisher's part, but the collector and eventual buyer got a guide that wasn't ripped or bent and was protected by plastic against scuffs. Also there were the stickers, free poster offer, not to mention the actual content wrapped in a hardcover with those classy bookmark ribbons. All for the then-astronomical price of $19.95!! No, screw YOU, Working Designs!!
I can't explain why any sane person would pay $60-90-180 for it, though. Maybe having this guide is a bit of a status symbol?
I remember your collection. Absolutely amazing. I only have 150-200 guides I think. Didn't you have like the entire PS1 run of RPG guides? I can't remember if it was you or some other CAG. I'm getting close.. only missing 10-15.
It's really getting hard to collect guides though. It seems like new guides go OOP fast and then start fetching some crazy amounts, ranging anywhere from $30-100.
I did post my collection years ago, but it must have been someone else that made that "all PS1 RPG guides" claim. Right now I'm trying to decide if I should try to finish Nintendo Guides (missing about 45) or Sandwich Island (need about 35). I'm feeling Nintendo would be much more expensive, but Sandwich Island guides take up more shelf space.
Actually collecting them isn't that hard. If you're following penny drops in that other thread, then you can kind of see them flood eBay. Check pawn stores, thrift markets, used books stores. If you see video games at yard sales, ask if they have any guides for them. The guides are something almost all people have but they'd never put them out because they figure no one would buy them.
And I thought I was crazy for collecting guides, at least there's others out there =)
Why not post a picture?
