My PC caught a nasty case of scabies and I'm having problems cleaning it. I've used search and destroy and adaware but they are not enough. Any other solid free programs I should know about?

You could try something like AVG, or the trial versions of Panda or Norton. check download.com or something and you might be able to find something there. If you want cheap antivirus, I remember seeing norton on buy.com, and between the google checkout discount and the mail in rebate, it ended up being only a few dollars.

Something to think about anyway =)

Just get AVG Free... my whole family uses it after paying Norton hundreds of dollars for their yearly subscriptions. We've been using AVG Free for 2 years now and haven't had a single issue on any of our computers (all 4 of them).

There's other good free programs too, but I'm not too familiar with them.

I was using AVG until I tired of it asking me to restart my system after every update. Now I use ClamWin, a lightweight open source virus scanner. The only downside to ClamWin, and it's a big one, is that it doesn't have real-time scanning. So if you have users downloading all sorts of shady stuff or popping in contaminated USB drives, then you should try something else.

Avast is also good.

But for the love of baby Jesus, do not let Norton touch one of your machines. It will slow down and wreck your system more than any virus or spyware out there.

I use AVG Free and it never asked me to restart after an update in the 4 years I've had it. It works great. I also use Ad-Aware and Spybot Search & Destroy to catch any spyware.

Yeah... me neither. It updates daily and not once has it ever asked me to restart my system.:whistle2:k

The restart option of AVG is an on/off box you can uncheck in the main scanning page. Anyway, I've been using the program for a few months and have been at least as satisfied with it as Norton's. The only downside is the free version doesn't allow you to schedule updates and scans; either it's done daily at startup (annoying) or done manually (my preference).

I was always irritated by the way Norton's would tell me it would find "problems" but couldn't do anything about them. And wouldn't tell me what they were. It was like DeNiro was watching my computer: "What did you find Bobby?" "I found some tings, Johnny, found some bad tings..."

You beat me to it Richard :applause:

I have used AVG free antivirus and AVG antispyware, and I must say I have been pleased so far, with the exception of not being able to schedule updates and scans, like Richard mentioned...

I don't consider this a big deal though, since I don't mind doing scans manually myself...

if you have something specific you need to remove download hijackthis.

It will tell you everything that is running, even hidden programs running in memory. it can also remove most of them.

just be careful with it as you can remove system critical applications and processes with it.

Thought this was funny...

My dad managed to install a new batch of viruses and spyware on his PC and couldn't remove them (even though I've installed AVG and Spybot and shown him how to use both ), so I got to have all the fun. Well, there apparently is a trojan called "Puper," and of course when detected by AVG is displayed as...wait for it..."Trojan Horse Puper."

Hey, I thought it was funny.
I use AVAST..... it's free from Download.com and it has daily automatic updates
This is my choice as well. I've used various anti virus programs and Avast is the one i've stopped on (at least for now).
