Any way to get rid of VHS movies?

Depends on how many you have and how old they are but some small video stores might still take them as trades for credit though you probably wont get much for them.
I just decided to hang onto mine untill they finally die and THEN change over to dvd versions.

There are several ways. Half.com will let you sell them at whatever price you set. Just list the item and let it sit until someone buys it. I'm not sure of the fees.
I took a bunch of mine to the Half Price Books here in town. Didn't get much for them, but it was better than nothing.
If you are going to throw them out though, take them to Goodwill or other similar store. They will go to someone who can use them and you can get a receipt to use on your taxes as a donation. Better than the dumpster.

Unless they are rare tapes, or tapes for which the DVD version has yet to come out, then your out of luck. You could try ebaying them, but you won't get much.
You might just see if your local library checks out tapes, and if the do, donate them there. If you have any kid friendly movies with possible semi-educational value donate them to your local elementary school or if it were something like Glory to a local junior high or high school.
If you have a college near you, you might contact them, some college's provide a small cache of VHS movies in the dorms for students to checkout, they would probably take a donation.

Half.com charges 15% for items less than 50 bucks. They also give you a shipping credit. On most items less than 10 bucks or so, my shipping credit is usually around the same as my commission fee. You won't get rich doing that, so put low prices, but you might help someone catch a movie they don't have yet.

400?!?! thats crazy i myself have about 20 movies and among them are bruce lee movies, independence day, men in black, 3 stooges movies. but then my sister has about 50 disney movies. i wish there was somewhere i could sell them. i just checked ebay for my sisters huge lot of disney movies and found this:

hopefully she can get around $175 for them. but the thing is is that dvd might die down in like 4-6 years because of new technology so if she rebuys them now on dvd then shell have to do this again.

your best bet may be just to make a huge lot of all your movies, and throw them on ebay.. have the buyer pay shipping, then if you get a bid of a hundred bucks or two, thats money in your pocket.. either that, or just save them, along with an old VCR and enjoy on a rainy day...

Yep, Disney movies are the exception to the, VHS is crap rule, if you can find disneys for a buck or two and get a big lot on ebay you can make a little spare change...

Yep, Disney movies are the exception to the, VHS is crap rule, if you can find disneys for a buck or two and get a big lot on ebay you can make a little spare change...

But I don't think we'll see as drastic a shift next time, as we saw with VHS to DVD. DVD offers massive improvement over VHS. HDDVD or Bluray or whatever isn't going to be that much of a leap, imho. Not everyone who's into DVD can even take advantage of the 480p yet. Plus DVD's have much more longevity than VHS, and I believe I've read that the HDDVD/BluRay machines will be backwards compatible with current DVD disks.
I wouldn't go out and 'replace' my entire VHS collection with DVD [in fact I didn't], I replaced them as I found a dvd offering the features I wanted at a price I wanted to pay. In fact there's only 5 or so DVD's I have that are re-buys of movies I bought. Then again, most of the movies I bought on VHS were 4.99 Blockbuster PVT's, so I'm not losing much anyway. [I do plan on getting the Star Wars Trilogy, which we currently have on VHS].

There are ways to convert your vhs into dvd, except they are a pretty big hassle.

ive considered the conversion from vhs to dvd, but i figured it was a hassle and would just be easier to buy the actual dvd. and years ago i never really cared about new technology replacine the current standard but now that im older and am aware of the future technology i dont like the idea of wasting money. if hddvd and blu ray players are backwards compatible that would be great but i havent heard that before. ur the first person ive heard make mention of it.
