Just wondering how you would rate it ?

I just got it,, but on my commute it loses signal for about half my hour trip. But it is almost full signal on my commute home... but I still find signal drops very often.

Otherwise,, I think the programming is great, and large selection.... but I'm hoping since is fairly new and expanding... those signal drops will soon be taken care of.

So hows your experience with it ?

I don't rate Sirius that highly. All my friends that had it had the same problems that you do. Lots of dropped signals. Even the salesperson told me he had that problem.

I have XM, and I'm loving it. Costs about $14/month for me after tax, and it works great. Never a dropped signal, unless I'm parked under a walkway or a large group of trees. Even in horrible weather, I get a great signal. Also, with the home/car subscription, you get XM Online for free.

I've had Sirius for about 3 months now. I've never had a problem with a lost signal during my commute; I only lose it in the parking garage at work. My commute is about an hour long one way and I listen to it all of the time.

Sirius also has the free online option with a paid car/home subscription, so XM has no advantage there. I really enjoy the programming; besides Stern in the morning I no longer listen to broadcast radio.

It's all about XM baby. 4 million + subscribers strong and they're about to launch two more satellites into space from what I hear.

Sirius is garbage.... introducing their "portable" player that can't get live broadcast and can record a whopping 44 minutes of programming.

Whereas XM has 3 portable players that can get live programming and can record a whopping 5 hours of programming. I have one of them, the Delphi MyFI and it is absolutely awesome! $12.95 a month.

By online option do you mean streaming the programming online? XM has that too...

i have sirius and love it. i only lose signal in my driveway because of all the trees.

if you dont care about hockey, football, or howard stern. then get XM

but NFL and NHL was the main reason i got satellite radio in the first place

Yes, as the previous post to mine already stated. That's why I mentioned Sirius had it too...

$500 for a lifetime?

That's until you die, right? So it could be like 70 years if I got it, and I wouldn't have to worry about price increases, inflation, or even unemployment.

Sounds tempting.

It's the lifetime of the specific radio.
You can transfer to another radio up to 3 times, I believe, for a 75 transfer fee each time.
And the lifetime offer ends, well, tomorrow.

XM also offers multiyear discounts, with no cancellation penalty; Sirius's multiyear discount plans have a 75$ cancellation fee.

Big differences:

XM: I think they have geosychronous sats.
Sirius: sats move [I think]

XM: Opie and Anthony
Sirius: Howard Stern next year

XM: MLB, Nascar, golf
S: NFL

XM: Deeper playlists, more stuff you havent' heard in a while, or never heard
S: More songs you may be familiar with, more repetition

Monthly subscription fees are equivalent. XM has Family Plan, each add'l radio up to 4 can be added to an account for 6.99. Not sure if S has that.

Hardware: I think S has more hardware available; but XM is catching up.

Automaker support: XM and S both have specific automakers installing sat-rad-ready devices in some of their new cars with a free trial sub; I'm not sure what carmaker is with whom.

They both have the online service included in the monthly fee. XM offers a few channels that are only on the online service [Special X, On the Rocks, XMLiquidMetal, The Eye], and some that are only on the birds [most of the 'network' talk/news channels like FNC ABC etc], and that is due to licensing issues. S is probably the same, but I don't know for sure.

We've had XM for probably two years now, and love it. Every day I hear something I like that I've never heard before, or I hear a comedian I like on the comedy channels. I was a little unhappy when they raised the price from 9.99/mo to 12.99, but they included online access in that, which helped a little.

I get a good signal except:
* in my garage
* under my parking deck at work
* for about 50 yards driving down this road that is totally surrounded by really high trees

If you like the radio, or miss what radio used to be, you've got to give satrad a chance. It's lightyears ahead of most terrestrial radio.

I personally don't care about 'extreme radio' [Stern or O&A] or sports, so those two were non-issues for me. I wanted deep, wide playlists with a large variety of music, and XM, imho, has the better music playlists.
Favorite channels:
Fungus [punk/ska], Boneyard [rock/metal], Fred [classic alternative], Cinemagic [movie scores and clips], Comedy [uncensored comedy], On the Rocks [lounge music], Special X [assorted weirdness, Fox News Channel

Those are the 3 reasons I am going to switch to Sirius by the end of the year.

Being the ultimate cheapass, I have Sirius, but only as a freebie bundled with my Dish Network service. Personally, I’m pretty damned fond of the programming. Even with the abbreviated station list, I’m never at a want for something to listen to.

As for repetition, I find the stations I prefer have a pretty wide rotation. Of course, this could be due to the fact that I listen to old folk’s music (First Wave, Soul Revue, & Underground Garage.)

I am about to jump on the bandwagon here. I hear a lot more about Xm but that doesnt mean crap... I am still torn up and Panasonic (who I favor for car receivers) is teamed with Sirius but I think I am going with Xm due to the reception losses I have heard of with Sirius.

Siruis has NPR (only news without spin, because they are funded 80% by donations, and 20% by taxes).

Car Talk is the best radio show ever.

XM has NPR also. I believe much of the programming is similar between the 2 services. Especially the music channels where you could probably find the equivalents on each. The pricing is basically the same as well. I think the decision comes down to the exclusive programming you want such as the NFL, MLB, NCAA, Howard Stern, Opie and Anthony, etc.

Of course, most AM markets carry NPR as well, without even going into the "without spin" portion of your claim [Nina Totenberg? Please.]

XM has PRI featuring Bob Edwards, Whaddaya Know, This American Life, etc.

Reception's definitely an issue, the best provider in the world doesn't mean jack if you can't listen to it. Unfortunately there's no way for anyone else to tell you how *your* reception will be, we can just tell how ours is. Neither service gives 100% reception everywhere you go.

There is some crossover between the two [they both have the major news channels, etc]. and they both have exclusives, and different playlists.

They both have 'rock' 'classic rock' 'alternative' etc. But what they play on those channels, that's the difference. XM allegedly has "over two million titles" [I'm assuming that means songs]. Sirious claims "over one million".

If you haven't yet, try the free online trial of each service. I'd decide on the service first, then look for hardware [I personally didn't get a car head unit, I wanted the portability and low pricepoint of the Roady.]

Also, if you get one of the standalone units, and end up not liking that service, you can always cancel your sub [as long as you don't get one of the contract long-term plans] and sell the hardware on Ebay or something. You won't recoup all your money, but it'll help subsidize the next hardware you buy. I bought my receiver used from a message board.
