Anybody not like the New Super Mario Brothers (DS)?

CAGiversary!
I Picked this up this morning and I halfway through the second world. I'm not trying to star a flame war but so far I have a few issues with the game:

1) I really hate not being able to save on the map screen anytime I feel like it. You have to finish a castle or have 5 coins and come up on a mushroom to be able to save. This makes this a game that you can't pick up and play for a few minutes (or one level) which I find disappointing for a portable game.

2) Having to touch the screen to use your spare item seems like a way to justify the stylus and nothing else. I'd rather be able to press pause to be able to do this so I wouldn't have to stop and handle the stylus.

3) Same thing... going between worlds requires the stylus

4) So far, the only thing that has impressed me graphically is when mario gets super freaking huge. 90% of Yoshi's Island seems to have the same (or maybe better) quality of graphics. There has been some good music and re-mixes from SMB though.

5) Yoshi's Island even seems to have better Level design and "cool things" that happen. So far the coolest thing I've seen mario do besides get super freaking huge is to do wall jumps and break blocks with his ass.

6) Mario really let himself go. His fat butt just can't stop on a dime or move as crisply as he used to. I hope he'll get his cape and raccoon tale later in the game.

Hopefully it gets better. This is by no means a "bad" game but I wouldn't give it more than a 7/10 from what I've seen so far, it is just a bit above average and not the second coming of Mario I'd hoped for. I think Yoshi's Island (or even Mario vs. Donkey Kong) is a better game in almost every way. Maybe I should have gotten Princess Peach instead?

I'm kind of hoping there's some obvious way to save that I just missed, but this by far is my biggest gripe. That, and for some reason the game just doesn't have the same "magic" that the others did. I can still pick up SMB 3 and enjoy it, but this one hasn't captured my attention.

yeah the saving sucks but after you pass it you can save at any time. And forget the stylus, I just use my finger.

Yeah I just blew through the game. After I finished it I went back to get everything because you could then save anytime. Just save your coins and whenever you want to save go to one of the mushroom houses. It's not that bad. I just used my finger for the power ups also.

Are you serious? You take out the stylus every time you want to access the spare item. I just move my right thumb over and give it a little tap. Sure it smudges the screen, but that is why I have a microfibre cloth. I love the touch screen useage in this game.

But I don't get this...most of the 5 star sign posts only unlock item houses and 1up houses...so you can still get through most worlds without unlocking these, and then when you need to save just go back and use one.

I finally got to the end castle in world 8 and remembered I'd left a sign post in world 4 and went back to it and used it to save. I mean, its inconvenient if you get caught without a way to save, but if you plan it out you can always have one left.

Haven't any of you people heard of Sleep Mode?

If I only have a minute to play, I'll play for that minute and then just close the DS. Then later when I have a few more minutes I'll open the DS and *Boom* game is right where I left off.

It's probably the worst of the 2D Super Mario games, but even that says a lot for it. I really enjoy the game and usually play it at least 20 minutes a day. Also, it's great for the shitter.

I can't say the game is bad, because it isn't, but it's become my least favorite traditional mario game. I felt it was lacking a few things here and there. Probably if everything was harder and it felt more important in the mario universe, then I probably would be okay with it. Within 3 days of owning it (and beating it on the release day as well as unlocking everything the next day) I put it up on ebay. I haven't looked back since.

Good game though, just not for me.

I liked the game, but it comes nowhere close to the classics.

The biggest thing that I missed: the ability to kick shells vertically. Man I loved doing that in SMW.

I love the game, but in my opinion it stays mostly the same throughout the game. Just minor environment and enemy changes. So, this game won't be getting any better for you.

Um, you don't have to use the stylus for ANYTHING in this game. This is the third DS game that I know of that officially tells you to put your thumbs on the touch screen. If Nintendo says it's okay, it's okay with me.

This is my least favorite Mario Game, besides the oiginal. SMW is the Best, period. I don't like the Map design, the saving features, the new powerups (Blue Shell which is a pain to even use), and all the toad houses which give nothing but crap.

Its a great gane, but flawed.

I love it. Probably my 3rd favorite of the 2D mario games behind Super Mario World and SMB3.

All the hidden coins and exits are a blast to try to get, and add a good bit of challenge. Some of the coins are fucking hard to get.

Hmm. This game lacked the wacky and memorable level design of Mario Bros. 3, it tried to imitate Super Mario World with it's secrets but fell very flat, and it doesn't have the magic of Yoshi's Island. Still, it's a good game, but probably the worst 2D Mario game next to the orginal Mario Land (not Mario Land 2 mind you, that was an amazing game), end of story. The saving system sucks too, big reason why I never finished it.

I can agree with some of what the OP said, but not all of it. The save system is mildly irritating, but once you beat the game you can save whenever, and the DS has the most convinient, longest lasting sleep mode ever, so the inability to save didn't bother me too much.

I would agree about having to use the touch screen for your backup item was a poor decision all around, since I don't like getting fingerprints on my screen and there were plenty of unused buttons they could have used instead. I guess this way you can't use your backup items in caves, but that situation rarely presented itself.

Ultimately, while it wasn't as good as Yoshi's Island, Mario Bros 3, or even Mario World, it wasn't far behind any of those and still a worthy sequel.

Plus, since it's sold so amazingly well I'm sure we'll be seeing a sequel, probably even in the next 2 years.

See, this is how I feel... sure, it wasn't the great Mario game ever but there care like 5 greatest Mario games- all equally great (SMB, SMB3, SMW, SMW2, and SM64). But even if it's not the greatest, it's best Mario game I've played in almost a decade (the last being SM64).

But some of the things that bothered me seemed as real obvious issues... like the power-ups, level variety, and the difficulty.

I've previously expressed my disapointment in "New Super Mario Bros." By far the least innovative Mario game to date, and the level design is terrible when compared to SMW and SMB3. The new items add nothing to the gameplay, and there are no flying powers. I wouldn't go as far to say that I dislike the game, but it could have, and should have been so much more.

I didn't think it was too bad. I mean I did just trade it in to EBGames earlier this afternoon but I had a blast while I was playing it. I played and beat every world/castle including the 2 lower alternate worlds but didn't bother to unlock many extra paths because it didn't feel very worthwhile to go through the trouble. I was worth playing but I'm a little dissapointed in Nintendo for their thinking that its actually worth $34.99 like they feel obligated to price all their first part DS titles at. Oh well I guess that's a discussion for another day.

Those of you looking for a sequel to Mario 3 or Mario World kinda missed the point. This was meant to be very tied to the original SMB, not the later incarnations. While there are hints of the later games in it, it's all going down a different path from the original game. Reading some of the creator interviews that Nintendo Power (and probably some other sites) did are helpful in understanding their concepts. Now, you may or may not agree with their choice of direction, which is fine. But I think they totally accomplished what they wanted to do, and I had an absolute blast playing the game, and I'll probably play through it anew in a few days here. But, to each his own.

As others have said, griping about the save system is quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Can't save yet? Need to go do something else? Close the freaking lid. In 1/4 of a second your game progress is saved and your battery will be just fine.

In the end, there was a heck of a lot of hype (both in the new game normal type of hype, and the old game type of hype we call "nostalgia") for this game, and it doesn't surprise me in the least that some people were at least some what let down by it. I don't fall into that camp, but I hope you can at least get some enjoyment out of it before you trade it in or sell it on CAG.

I loved it. The saving thing was irritating but easy to get around, and I agree that Mario at first seemed more sluggish; However, once you start getting into the depth of the game, it is amazing. Finding all of the big coins, getting all of the alternate level ends, it adds a lot to the game.
By far the least innovative Mario game to date, and the level design is terrible when compared to SMW and SMB3.
To be fair, that was the whole point. The stated in interviews that what they were trying to do is just make an updated version of the original SMB. Essentially a sequel to that game that was similar in tone and feel and didn't take a lot from the laster games. Kind of what a sequel to SMB today would look like if the other games did exist.

I'm hoping like hell they do the same thing with the rest of the games in the series and we get News Super Mario Bros 2, NSMB3 and NSMB:World! :D

Aaah, you kids and your "save anywhere" option. Back in my day we had to play all the way through a game in one sitting or we LOST our progress and had to start at the beginning, and we LOVED it.

It's ok. I knew what I was getting into when I bought it. Ok, so it's not the all-encompassing, be-all-end-all game all the fanboys thought it would be...it's no big deal. Still well worth a purchase...especially for me since I need non-stylus intensive games until my screen protectors arrive this week.

I'm not disappointed because, like the post above, I realize this is a remake of Super Mario Bros. - NOT Super Mario 2, 3, or 4. I would also like to see "new" versions of those, but...one step at a time here.

If this wasn't a Mario game but rather a off brand platformer this would have been slammed like crazy. I played for a hour and thought it was ok. Nintendo could have done better if they really tried.

Honestly, don't even worry about it. As long as you make sure theres no dust or dirt on the screen (i.e. wipe it off) each tiem before playing a stylus game you'll have no worries.

I had my regular DS from launch, and it has no scratches that are noticeable unless you hold it in sunlight and look for them, and I NEVER used any screen protectors.

Not planning on any for my Lite either, to much hassle to get good ones and get them on with out dust, bubbles etc. And hell, when it comes down to it even if it my Lite would eventually get scratched up down the road it's only $130 so it wouldn't break the bank to replace, not to mention it will eventually see a price drop.

I'd give it an 8/10 so far - I'm only on world 2 though. It is definitely a new version of SMB though which is pretty sweet for the nostalgia factor alone. I don't think this game even sniffs the greatness of Yoshi's Island though (the greatest platformer in the history of the world) and the level design seems rather bland so far...

Why not reuse the points system of Yoshi's Island and put 25 red coins (2 pts each) and 5 huge gold ones (10 pts each) for a total of 100 pts on each level? That shit made me play Yoshi's Island way longer than I probably would have. It gives the game so much replayability - as it stands now there is no incentive to picking up regular coins. I also don't like the blue shell or mini-mario powerups.

The one thing that nobody has mentioned is Mario vs Luigi. That mini game alone makes up for a lot of the short comings in level design and length of NSMB. By no means is it a perfect game, but it's still better then 95% of the platformers out there.

NSMB really needed a secret world though. I'm not going to run around getting my ass kicked by the game just to unlock a bunch of toad houses and coins I don't need.
You couldn't save AT ALL in Mario 1-3 or Mario Land... I don't see why the saving problem is so big.
True enough, but the point of the portable game is to play for a few minutes and then turn it off, which is where the complaints are coming from mostly (I think...). Although, sleep mode renders that complain invalid.

I played through the game and loved it. I think he reason he controls so "sluggishly" is because that is the way he controlled in the original. And, the blue shell powerup is so powerful If you know how to use it.
If this wasn't a Mario game but rather a off brand platformer this would have been slammed like crazy.
So true, but because it's Mario it's a great game. Nintendo fans are almost as bad as the Final Fantasy fans.

I think it's a great 2D platformer period. Being Mario just adds some charm and nostalgia.

It's a great, old school straight forward 2D platformer, that is pretty challenging if you actually try to find everything rather than just rushing through, seeing the credits, and moving on to the next game in your massive pile of games you bought just because you saw at good deal on here at CAG.

It's not innovative, but that's fine. I spend a ton of time playing SNES games on emulators and don't play my X-box, PS2 or GC all that much as I just don't dig the 3D games as much. So I enjoy that it is a true through back game that feels like a sequel to a game I loved in an era when I loved gaming (rather than just playing VERY casually like I do today).

What sucks most about NSMB is that Nintendo seemed to forget what platform they made it for. The DS is a system with a dozen "15 minutes a day" games. So if someone wants to walk their nintendog or do a brain age session after finishing a NSMB level then they can't swap carts until they rush through another 4 levels to get to a castle.

I meant for this game to last me until Zelda but in the end I just rushed through everything to unlock the unlimited saves. But by the time i got it then i was burnt out on the game. Nintendo needs to realize that just because they gave us nostalgic gameplay doesn't mean they have to give us the same old nostalgic annoyances. Every DS game should be saveable anytime so you can swap carts and check on that damn dog.
I really can't believe there is so much outcry against the save system, especially since the levels are so short.
And easy.

wow, i know this is cheap ass gamer, but spend some fucking gold coins and buy into a mushroom house or something dude... that lets you save on the spot if you HAVE TO WALK YOUR NINTENDOG SO BADLY.

Thanks for saying this! I personally really dig New Super Mario Bros and think it is a great game well worth the cost of admission. Nonetheless, I find the lack of easy save annoying because of the reasons listed below....I never play just one game at a time. I want to be able to switch out my carts and see what Tom Nook has for sale or if one of my neighbors is moving out :) It's because of this need that the "sleep" mode is pretty useless for me.

Also, I prefer to *fully* exlpore a stage and find all its secrets before moving on. That means playing a full world takes a while. Is it a huge problem? no Does it make this a bad game? no BUT, I would prefer a save anytime system and hope Nintendo goes that route in future sequels. :)

First off, most people didn't even know what the coins were for so they were saving them expecting to spend it on something good. Not spending it on a one-time use save point.

Secondly, this was a very easy game so many people didn't go coin searching specifically because they wanted to go for 100% coins AFTER finishing the "story" portion of the game.

While I still think the game is worthwhile....there's your quote of the thread, right there.

While I do agree that not being able to save on-the-fly is a bit of a nuisance, I still am enjoying this game a lot. It has re-ignited my love for old-school Mario side-scrollers, so much so that I intend on buying Yoshi's Island for the GBA the next time I see it.

I'm really hoping that, due to the success of this game, Nintendo decides to release a New Super Mario World. Super Mario World, in my opinion, is the best Mario game to date.

I want to, and I know it's only 20 bucks, but I can just feel it in my bones that it's gonna be on the Virtual Console for something like 5 bucks. And then I would feel stupid.

It won't look near as good as it does on the DS Lite.

2-D really seems to pop on those screens.

Man, all you do is say negave things about almost.. everything!

I pretty much enjoy this game so far (world 3!), it's not meant to beat SMB3 or SMW.

It is meant to be in the same vein as as the original Super Mario Brothers. (hence the name New Super Mario Brothers)
