I just started geocaching this weekend and I like it a lot so far!
Does anyone here on CAG participated in this activity?

So far we've found 11 caches in two days of looking. I've posted a whole blog on CAG about our findings HERE.

If you do not know what geocaching is, check out www.geocaching.com for more information.

Did you think to start this thread because of that Geico Insurance magazine that talked about it?

Anyway, sounds kinda cool but the downside is that you have to go outside and melt in the hot Summer sun. Maybe if it were possible to do at night in Winter...

You can do it anytime you want.

I've done it, but either I suck at it or the caches were missing because I only found one, and that's after getting the clues for it. It's alot of fun though. For anyone that doesn't know what it is, it's a real-life treasure hunt guided by your GPS. Most of the "treasures" are simply a logbook (scrap of paper) to sign your name that you were there.

I've always thought about it but it's never gotten beyond that. I think it would be fun for me and the kids. I should definitely give it a shot. They'd like being able to use the GPS, for one.

Ok, you've got my interest peeked. Any idea what the best geocaching app is on the iPhone? Especially one that doesn't require a "premium" geocaching membership - I'm not ready to take the full leap yet.

No clue here, since I use a handheld outdoor camping/hunting unit when I do it. Try the geocaching site listed in the first post. I'm sure there's probably a good app someone can recommend there.

I know, I was kinda making a joke. Like "Not the SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN!".

Anyway, sounds intriguing but kinda useless IMO. Unless you found things with stuff in it like I hear some people do. Just a log paper kinda doesn't make it "Geocaching", but more like "Hiking".

Thats the point.

I used to do it all the time, but now less frequently (I've done all the ones within a reasonable distance). When a new cache appears I'll usually try to check it out asap. Have several travel bugs with me whenever I'm out.

If you ever see "GoodQuality" or "GudQuality" in a logbook, thats me.

My friend bought an app yesterday when we went geocaching. It was just called Geocaching for $9.99. It worked very well for him and he seemed to like it. It displayed all available caches in his area, it also gave the cache serial number, information, hints, etc. Once he found a cache, he could automatically log that he found it on geocaching.com through the app. He later saved up 3 or 4 finds and posted them all at once. The only downside, it drained his battery pretty fast, I'm not sure if that is with any GPS app, but make sure to have a charger on hand.

I have never heard of geocaching before, but it sounds pretty cool! I guess I will have to find a gps on the cheap and try it out.

The funny thing is, you've passed by probably HUNDREDS of them and don't even realize they are all around you! ;) To the guy that said it sounds too much like hiking--well, some are in the wild, but some are hidden right by you in the city.

It's crazy how many there are within a 5 mile radius of my city. There are almost a hundred nearby, and I don't even live in a big city.

It really is crazy to think about all of these little things hidden right under your nose. There is one right behind the Gamestop I live within walking distance from. Going back and checking the dates on when they are placed is crazy too. Some of them are over 2 years old, hidden from the public eye.

So I went and tried this today and it was a lot of fun. Having no GPS really sucks, but I still able to locate two caches. I found a Jeep 4x4 Travel Bug at one of the places I went to.

Now I'm just trying to find a decent deal on a Garmin hand held GPS.

Waste money on gas to find pieces of paper, pollute the earth more and use up oil so that we can be more dependent on the middle east, create more traffic on roads, etc. I hope people do not engage in this hobby.
