I just started using a wireless receiver. I don't know if it's official or fake but so far so good. In case anyone knows or cares, it is black and says Microsoft on the front but does not have the holographic sticker on the back. So again not sure if it's legit or not.
Anyway here are the steps I took to get this working with my wireless Xbox controller:
1) Go
here and download and install the driver files. Make sure to pick the proper operating system in that drop down before downloading. Note: Your wireless receiver may have come with a disc with the drivers on them. That's wonderful but I did not use them. I downloaded from the given link instead.
2) Connect your wireless receiver to a powered usb port on your computer. If I remember correctly it should then install and a green light on the wireless receiver will turn on.
3) Push the button on the wireless receiver, then turn on and push the sync button (it's the little round button on the top of the controller to the right of the left bumper) on your Xbox controller. That should be it! Note: As my memory sucks, I may have this backwards. You may have to turn on and hit the sync button on the controller first, then hit the button on the receiver.
Here is a list of games that support the Xbox controller
For games that do not support the Xbox controller, you can still use various 3rd party programs to manually set the button configuration. I use Xpadder and for example it took me about 45 minutes on first use to set controls for Amnesia. If you know what you're doing it could be done in about 10 minutes or less I imagine.
Also, one thing I noticed is that there's normally no way to shut off the Xbox controller immediately. It will remain on for about 10-15 minutes when you're not using it. However I googled a little and found a little program that will help with that issue. To download that go
here. I am in no way affiliated with either of these apps so for all I know they could be viruses. However I personally doubt it and I use one of them and everything is fine as far as I can tell.
