Anybody try using the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows

Sinistar

CAGiversary!
Was thinking about picking one of these up from Amazon or newegg around $15. do these work well or is it just better off buying a wired controller?

I have an old 360 controller I never really use anymore and would like to use it on the PC to play a bunch of arcadey type Steam games I have that are controller enabled,

Also wanna check out Steam Big Picture Mode looks great to play PC games on the TV(Bastion< PB. Winterbottom, Binding of Issac, LIMBO, etc.)

One of my 360 wireless controllers came with an adapter like this... it worked pretty well. I mostly used it to play HAWX and racing games, but I had no problems with it. Might need to tinker with a key binding program for some games, though.

Thanks, I'll see if I can pick one up.. Though on closer inspection it looks like the ones on Amazon I found and also Newegg has some 3rd party ones, but are the "official" ones available anymore? If so where can I get it?

Also it looks like Binding of Issac does not have naitive controller support, have to use an app called JoytoKey (lol I just saw this by going into controls in the options menu and it says to use Joytokey)

IF you buy one and it is a cheap thrid party knock off then you will have to install the official microsoft drivers manually. If you need any help doing so just pm me.

OK I ordered the HDE one off Amazon. Could not get it to work.
After installing the drivers it would pair with my 360 controller for about 5 seconds then disconnect and do the "ring" lights on the controler and would conenct again about a minute later.. rinse/repeat.
Tried using both the play and charge kit and batteries.. no luck.. Sending back to Amazon.

Anyone know of any deals where to get the whole Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows package? looks like Newegg and Amazon sell them for about $47.99.. Is that typical? I havent bought any 360 stuff in a while

You should try STAPLES it's one of those place that few gamers go looking for stuff and they usually have controllers there for cheaper. Occasionally, (as in not always) I see 360 Wireless pads there for under $20 in their bargain bins near mouses and KB.

Well I called around some of the local Staples and they said they don't carry any gaming stuff anymore so I guess I'll have to keep looking. :)

i had one. could never get it to work.

then i just used a wired one. worked great.

except my brother took it.

so now i use a ps3 controller emulated as a 360 controller connected via the charging cable.

When I go to my Staples. I asked them workers where are their PC games and gamepads at. Dude says they don't sell games or pads. I go to their PC section, red bin full of games. On the left side of the mouse section a blue bin of pads. I go to the register and show him the stuff. They are always surprised by it.

I would just go by when you can and check out their inventory. The Staples I go to have PC games from 2.99 to 5.99...but they are NEVER advertised.

I just started using a wireless receiver. I don't know if it's official or fake but so far so good. In case anyone knows or cares, it is black and says Microsoft on the front but does not have the holographic sticker on the back. So again not sure if it's legit or not.

Anyway here are the steps I took to get this working with my wireless Xbox controller:

1) Go here and download and install the driver files. Make sure to pick the proper operating system in that drop down before downloading. Note: Your wireless receiver may have come with a disc with the drivers on them. That's wonderful but I did not use them. I downloaded from the given link instead.

2) Connect your wireless receiver to a powered usb port on your computer. If I remember correctly it should then install and a green light on the wireless receiver will turn on.

3) Push the button on the wireless receiver, then turn on and push the sync button (it's the little round button on the top of the controller to the right of the left bumper) on your Xbox controller. That should be it! Note: As my memory sucks, I may have this backwards. You may have to turn on and hit the sync button on the controller first, then hit the button on the receiver.

Here is a list of games that support the Xbox controller

For games that do not support the Xbox controller, you can still use various 3rd party programs to manually set the button configuration. I use Xpadder and for example it took me about 45 minutes on first use to set controls for Amnesia. If you know what you're doing it could be done in about 10 minutes or less I imagine.

Also, one thing I noticed is that there's normally no way to shut off the Xbox controller immediately. It will remain on for about 10-15 minutes when you're not using it. However I googled a little and found a little program that will help with that issue. To download that go here. I am in no way affiliated with either of these apps so for all I know they could be viruses. However I personally doubt it and I use one of them and everything is fine as far as I can tell.
