Anyone Else Afraid to get Dragon Quest VIII B/C...
i got owned by the silver dragon in the dragovian trials.

fizzle was bs!
now i gotta buy staffs of rez...
screw levelling up =P i'll beat it at 44!
The silver is a toughie. I beat him after 2 tries at around level 46, so not too far off where you are. I did use alot of the special items I had collected throughout the whole game (Yggdrasil leaves, Elfin Elixir, things like that). You MUST have the Timbrel of Tension - get the recipe from the Dragovian downstairs in the church. I gave that and the Sage's Stone to Jessica and have her alternate those. If you psych up Hero and Yangus and also have Jessica psych everyone up (with the Timbrel of Tension) you can get some nasty hits in. Unleash a fire spell with Jessica when her tension reaches 20 or 50 (I didn't know till this point in the game that tension increases spell power as well - had never tried it before!).

After I beat the Silver, I thought there was no way I was going to beat the Gold one at my level. But I found him surprisingly easy next to the Silver. I forget exactly why - I think he didn't continually flash away all my buffs (and tension) like the Silver does (if you are lucky you will get 2 turns to buff with the Silver - that is why the Timbrel of Tension is so important). The gold was definitely tougher to hit, but the strategy he used was much easier to deal with.

Now, after the gold be prepared for a HUGE jump in difficulty. Since we've spoiled exactly what the Dragovian trials are at this point, I'll reveal what he is - a Darksteel Dragon (I think that's the exact name - it has been 2 weeks since I fought him). That bastard is nearly as tough as a metal slime, but with WAY more HP. For all of my high tension attacks, monster teams call ins, and multiple resurrections I only managed to hit him for about 200 damage. The silver and gold, though, had way fewer HP than the ones before them, so I assume he doesn't have TOO many more HP than that (maybe 500-1000). In any case, this is why I am currently power levelling.

Besides having some tough skin, this guy hits you THREE times per turn, with each bite taking over half the HP from each character. So if he bites anyone twice they are gone. He also tends to attack before any of my characters do. After his first few attacks you are spending all your time healing and resurrecting. I am trying to level up enough so that my chars can withstand two bites. I think then, maybe, I can take him.
Well I just have one thing to say to that: fuck that dragon's desperate attacks. fuck them up his ass.
Oh yeah, those. Those do indeed suck, don't they :D.

I only tried him once, I didn't know he had Fizzle so that screwed me up... then I made a critical error in trying to Kazing someone with Angelo even though he was fizzled... then too many characters died for me to make a comeback.

Heck, I almost lost against the last dragon because I accidentally hit run o_O;

My boss strategy is pretty simple. The first thing I do is cast Acceleratle. Having everyone take their turn before the enemy (except maybe Yangus) is huge and makles Accelratle one of the most best spells in the game. Even if a boss casts wave of ice, put Acceleratle back on, if someone dies cast Acceleratle to put it back, it's just that important to get first turn.

Once that's done, if the boss has wave of ice, I usually just do normal attacks with Hero and Yangus. Angelo defends or heals if anyone is injured, and Jessica uses Oomph, barrier/insulatle if needed.

In postgame, I have two timbrels, for boss I put one on Yangus and one on Jessica. I maxed out Jessica's sex appeal for hustle and at 20 tension, it cures 180 HP for 0 MP. Even with 5 tension it's 120 HP. Then Falc/Dragon Slash with Hero, Angelo using defend/heal and Yangus using Hatchet Man.

Defend is so underrated... it can cut damage in half, including spell damage. There are some special occasions where it can't (Rhapthornes ball) but otherwise it's pretty good and it's great when you don't want a certain character to lose too much HP in that round.
Don't tell me you went through all the Dragovian trials at level 43?? Or did you just do the "first" one which is part of the story and then go on to the final ending? Cause my team at level 45 and 2 monster teams couldn't make it past the 2nd to last Dragovian. I'm up to level 50 now, and think I need to be near 55 to handle it.

You should go back and do the Monster Arena - it is fun putting different combos in there and seeing what happens. But I went through it very early so I could get the prizes (and monster teams) to help out in the main game.
I just beat the first trial thingy to get the different ending. I liked the first ending more, I thought it was more entertaining than the 2nd.

As for going back to the monster arena, I may do that later, but I'm currently addicted to Fire Emblem and Guitar Hero.

Just in case you didn't know, most status spells like Accelleratle and Kabuff are cumulative. You can keep casting them and they'll keep on adding to attributes (until a certain point). Too bad Oomph isn't cumulative; as it stands though, Oomph can make the difference between winning a fight and losing it.

Also, don't underestimate Miracle Slash against the dragon. Don't get greedy and go for something like Falcon Slash. My guys are recoving a whopping 400HP when they hit him with Miracle Slash, which is far more benificial than giving him slightly more damage only to get killed on the next turn.
