Anyone else pissed about Smash Bros Melee?

I know this topic would probably have been better 2 years ago, but I have only been here a couple of months.

I waited, and WAITED, and WAITED for Smash Brothers Melee. My roommates and friends in College sacrificed who knows how much time and grades playing Smash on the 64. My favorite character, by far, was Fox. To this day I would challenge anybody in that game on the N64. I had the character down to a work of art.

Out comes Melee for the Gamecube. Who is the ONLY character to drastically change, and for the worse? FOX.

Changes to Fox:
1) His "forcefield" that bounces back items or weapon fire at opponents. First, they gave it to everyone with that weird little blocking maneuver that essentially does the same thing (so it is no longer unique to his character) and second, it no longer *charges* the item or weapon that bounces back at his opponent. This made Fox a weaker character.

2) They weighted him down. I barely jump before I'm back on the ground again. This makes air attacks incredibly more difficult. Both because there is less time in the air to establish your attack, and because you have to do the attack so quickly before he hits the ground that it is very difficult to time when he will be at the top of his jump. On the 64, you could jump-kick someone and recover in time to do a "double-jump" before falling to your death. Now if you jump-kick someone, you'd better have something to land on. This made Fox a weaker character

3) The laser. It no longer stuns anyone and therefore loses the little bit of defensive benefit it had before. This made Fox a weaker character.

4) The forward-strong attack. On the 64 Fox "hopped" forward, giving him some range. They changed it to some sort of roundhouse kick with much less range. This made Fox a weaker character.

5) The Quick-Attack. Though sometimes surprising to your opponent, it is incredibly risky if you're near a ledge (which is almost always) and it's easy to do on accident. I'll give a neutral on benefit/hinderance but it certainly didn't make up for the handicap they gave Fox.

What do you think? Am I wrong here? Fox was my favorite character and this is honestly the only Nintendo sequel I have ever felt let down with. Anybody think another character was adversly affected? Am I the only one here that thinks Fox and his fans got the shaft???

ooooh, they changed your character. The better music, graphics, interface, framerate, environments and number of characters more than makes up for the changes. It was a good game on the N64, but all the loose ends and presentation were polished for the Cube. I think they made all the characters more equal to one another which is better IMO.

no ive never played in a tournament. but im a loud mouth jackass when it comes to competitve games wether im good at them or not. everyone loves a villian.
the only thing that pissed me off about ssbm is that the secret characters were more or less duplicates of oher characters. ie: mario/dr mario. falco/ fox. marth/roy.
oh and the egm aprils fool day trick mad me mad. sonic and tails wouldve been awesome secret characters.
Uh.. do any of you play.. seriously? As in tournament-competitive levels? Doesn't really sound like it.
I would have given just about anything to play in a tournament on the 64 version. Do they have those?

Holy fuck I thought I fell out of my chair and woke up back in 2001, like some sort of "Peggy Sue Got Married" plot twist.
"I thought I fell out of my chair and woke up back in 2001"

What do you mean....BACK...in 2001???? What year IS this?????
2004 :)

This was one of my first games for the cube, and it's still one of the best. They made it so you can/have to win with everyone. Link's sword spin seems less cheap in this game, since I can win against someone doing it say, for every move. I thought Jigglypuff was a waste, until I beat level 51 with him after failing miserably with everyone I normally used. I was more pissed at how impossible it is to get every trophy than anything else. I think Kid Icarus and Eggplant wizard would have been kick ass hidden characters. He turns people into eggplants, that's bad ass.
Real men don't play GameCube.

They play XBox.
 Step off the Xbox... I mean soapbox son. No one wants to listen to your Xbox drivel...

I think Fox is still a great character. I prefer Falco myself over him, but Fox is only slightly different of course. The character they ruined is Kirby, I think that's obvious to people who played a lot of the original SSB.

Oh, and "real men" don't come to the GameCube board to bash it/spout fanboy crap about Xbox (and vice versa). Go to Gamefaqs or something.

But standing on it gives me about a foot and a half of extra height. So I stand head and shoulders over everyone here with authority!

Don't mean to burst your bubble, but lots of characters changed. Take Samus's spin move. Used to do a lot of damage and you would stay airborn for a long time. Now it's more of a quick clear out. It's over and done in a second.

I noticed that one first because I use Samus all of the time. It's no big deal, if you wanted it to be the same game, pick up your N64 and play that.

Not anymore. Just Melee tournaments these days. . .

As far as extra charactes being the same - I think they're different enough. If Falco was so similar to fox, you'd never see anyone playing Falco - but he has his perks. (IE: Tweaked ['stolen'] laser, reflect, variance in jumping abilities, etc).

While Ganon is very similar to Captain Falcon, their speed (among other things) creates a completely different play atmosphere and style.

I thought the boob-eyed smiley made my sarcasm apparent. Next time I'll use the tag!

I think it was pretty obvious that you were being sarcastic all along. :)

Especially when you said you were a foot and a half taller standing on the XBox. Everyone knows you would be a solid 3 feet taller.

People should download some of the videos floating around that showcase some amazing advanced tactics (i.e. Wave Dancing, Foxes various Shine Infinites, Falco's Shine combo, L-Canceling, Jump Canceling, Crouch Canceling, Directional Influence, Jigglypuff's Wall of Pain etc.). Once you master those, and then some, should you criticize a game.

I should also say that, although there are obvious similiarities in characters (i.e. Fox and Falco, Ganondorf and Captain Falcon, etc.), each is played very differently. I would also post a tier list, but it might get out of hand if I did (crazy tier debates over at GameFAQs).

I have some videos of the best Japanese and US players on AIM if anyone wants them. Here is an old video showcasing some advanced tactics (read: incredibly difficult to do!) by a skilled Fox player: http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~henhen/combo_fox.wmv

As for tournaments, Super Smash Bros. Melee has plenty of them with huge cash prizes. www.thevgames.com just started it's tour (30 cities, place first = free trip to LA for Finals) with a cash prize of $10,000. TG6, a huge tournament hosted in San Jose, will be scheduled around the best Japanese player (Captain Jack) for some intense matches. Cash prize is usually $1000-2000. There are plenty more. For more information, go to www.smashboards.com. I hope this isn't considered spam.

Edit: The above Fox video doesn't work anymore, so check out this match:
http://www.metroid2002.com/calfoolio/marth_vs_falco.avi (Marth player is named Isai aka Malva, the third best in the US).

yellowaznboy, is the second link working still? b/c it's not for me?

whoops, it was just really slow, hehe. actually, i don't see the video but i hear the sound... any computer literate peeps wanna help me out? :D

maybe its just me, but i never saw smash bros. melee as the deeply intense kind of fighting game where slight variations in character agility and moves made a real difference. i always personally just went with a random character and always found it just as fun.

if you want to talk about a character who got a raw deal, that'd be game and watch. i don't think anyone could disagree that he's light years ahead of the other "stars" of ssbm

I have problems just learning to play this game. I always wanted to be able to play it without going insane and kick peoples ass. Guess I just suck.

BTW, I still can't find a game on the Xbox I like.

No offense or anything, but it seems to me as though you haven't put in enough time to truly see how deep of a fighting game SSMB is. It's okay, though, since most people don't go to tournaments (aka basement Smashers) and will continue to believe Roy is the best because he has teh ph1r3.

Believe me, the subtle differences in each character alter play styles dramatically, so much so that Fox is played entirely differently than Falco, and Ganondorf (who most people incorrectly assume is slow) plays entirely differently than Captain Falcon.

Anyway, I'm not sure how interested people are in this, but read this for more information on how to access some of the best videos showcasing some of the best players from across the world: http://www.smashboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32800

Edit: Btw, the second link works for me. Download the latest codec. It's free!

Edit again: Click here to see matches between the top three US players (Ken, Isai, and Azen) from the latest tournament called Game Over!!!

Hey, alongx. You may be no good with Mr. Game & Watch, but no one I've met can beat me when I use him.

And b3b0p, I agree about the XBOX. I ended up having a tow truck put it in front of my door as a doorstop, but now I can't close my door...

Don't worry, I'm not some sarcasm-inhibited n00b. I should have used  or something I guess.

I effin love this guy/girl/pederast.

Im gonna go start a thread about him/her/it

my bro uses fox as his main character, and he can whoop some ass with him. and he was complaining about some of the same problems too, so just adapt to the new version cause these changes always happen.
