I got one on the initial launch date and randomly, my remote isn't working. I also woke up the other morning after the remote wasn't working and my disc tray was illuminated. It was kinda creepy haha...

Anyways I have replaced the batteries on the remote about 3 times, being in denial about it being broken.

Has anyone else had this problem?

wombat's wiimote appeared defective out the box and he had to get it replaced. However I had something similar happening as your describing. I 'resynched' the device w/the console via the little 'red sync button'. It's inside the battery compartment on the Wiimote + on the console under the flip up cover.

Once you push both buttons they 'resync' and it resolved the issue for me.
Good luck hope it's not fucked as the Wiimotes tend to still be sparce out there.

I had the same thing happen to me as a matter of fact last night, and I just resynched it and it seemed to work again. As for the disc tray seeming to randomly illuminate, it's happened to me a couple of times and I think it means you have mail from a buddy. Since the 3 times it's happened to me, I have a new message from my buddy.

Yeah, the remote I got with my console is totally dead. Tried replacing the batteries a bunch of times, resyncing, etc. It doesn't even blink when I pick it up and press the buttons. I have to call Nintendo about this tomorrow.

Tried calling but their Inidian call centers aren't open...

I wish there were wiimotes actually available.

Nintendo FAQ on the subject:

If you're having trouble getting your Wii Remotes synced to your Wii Console, or your Wii Remotes were synced previously and now the blue lights on your Wii Remote just flash and nothing happens, try the following.

  • First, make sure you have a fresh set of batteries. As the battery life depletes, the Wii Remote may begin to experience issues syncing properly.
  • Take the batteries out of your Wii Remote and wait one minute. Reinsert the batteries.
  • Turn on your Wii and wait until the Health and Safety Screen appears. (Don't press the A button.)
  • Now, press and hold the SYNC button on your Wii console for 15 seconds. This will delete all synced remotes from the system.
  • Now, re-sync your remotes one at a time. Open up the battery cover of your Wii Remote, push the red SYNC button inside, and then push the SYNC button on your Wii Console. Repeat this once for each controller.
  • If you're still experiencing issues, try to eliminate any wireless interference between the Wii Console and your playing area. Items such as cordless phones, microwaves, and other wireless items can prevent the Wii Remote from communicating effectively with the Wii Console.
