anyone ever use one of those ink refill things?

Depends on your printer type, the problem with many brands is that they've made it very difficult on newer ink carts to refill and reseal them well.
I just buy generic ink. What kind of printer do you have?
a Lexmark z705

30 dollars a cart is killing me

I have a lexmark and I tried black&white and the color refills. Neither one of them worked. It was a pain to get the cartridges open and it can get pretty messy if you're not careful. I got them filled and back in the printer, and neither one of them printed anything. I don't remember the brand of refill, but I'm wary of any of them now.

Ditch lexmark. The refill kits are crap, and even generic ink carts for them are expensive. Get a canon. Generic carts are $2 a piece!

Check out target for good deals on the canon pixma1500

I may just do that. I am going to go tomorrow and see about getting another printer as I have spent a lot in ink this semester
if you pee in the refills they work pretty horribly.
So THAT's what I was doing wrong.

On-topic, I use them sometimes and they're so-so. They worked a couple times at first, but the last couple printers I've had, they seemed to kill the cartridges right off, so that it won't print correctly or at all. So, it might be worth a shot to buy a cheap kit and see how it works for you. If not, you're just going to toss the cartridge anyhow.

Canon makes the best all around printers. There is one or two other brands that will print pictures better, but thats it.

The reason their ink is so cheap is that the print head is in the printer. HP and lexmark have the print heads on the cart.

Some people say generic ink destroys your printer, but I dont think so. Even if it did, after 1 set of black and 1 set of color carts, you already saved enough to buy a new printer!

You can buy generic ink carts for $2? I priced ink and mine is like $19 a cartridge. I got a Lexmark 510? for $30 at walmart like a month ago.
Are you guys buying generic ink off ebay/another site or finding it in stores?
I usually get mine online... a lot of websites offer free shipping, and it's really easy to do so once you have a website you keep visiting for ink.

any specific websites?

Anyone ever tried a toner refill kit or know somewhere that I can get a cartridge for cheaper than normal? I've got a Samsung ML-1710 and toner cartridges are freaking expensive.

What kind of printer do you have? Inkjet? Laser? And brand?

i got a lexmark now but if you just post links to the cheapassink websites we can pick up a cheap printer using the cheap ink as a guide.

I have a Epson and I just get 3rd party cartidgages from online. It's very cheap and never had a problem with them.

exactly. I plan on picking up that printer Big Nick was talking about if I can find it at Target for cheap since he said that the carts were cheap, but I would like to know where to get the cheap ink from before buying it as I would buy a few carts to have at my house for when they run out

Lexmark and HP have the printer heads on the cart, so even generic ones of those are expensive. Canon and Epson have the print heads on the printer, so thats how the ink is so cheap.

I have used abacus and tyler martin with excellent results. megatoners gets good reviews too. Swift ink is a little pricey, buy they use pigment ink if thats what the OEM uses.

Pigment is a little more durable than dye based ink.

They don't work. The printer gestapo put chips in their cartridges that will screw up the ink nozzle after a certain amount of time. This discourages recycling of cartridges, increases landfill waste, and puts a healthy amount of cash in the printer companies pocket while doing nothing for the consumer.

HP makes 1/3 of it's money off of ink. Behind the RIAA, Microsoft and the now defunct Enron it's the biggest example of what's wrong with corporate America today.

The 1500 is a basic canon printer. It has a black cart and a color cart. Its perfect for text, and does a so-so photo. The pixma3000 is the next step up and has seperate color carts. One cyan, one yellow, and one magenta. This will print much better pictures.

I just got one of these:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/consumer/consDetail.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&oid=49631773

I got it so I can print on DVDs and CDs. Its picture output is very close to that of the 3000. Its generic ink carts a $1 or $2 more than the canon, but it uses 5 carts for the color. In addition to the 3 standard ones, it has light cyan and light magenta. The extra cost of the carts doesnt matter to me much since I only use it to print on DVDs.

So, if all you use a printer for is text and dont mind a lesser quality photo, get the 1500, I have seen them at target for about $30. If you want excellent photos, get the 3000. If you want great photos, and the ability to print on DVDs and CDs go for the epson.

The canon 3000 is pretty much the same as the 4000
The epson r200 is pretty much the same as the r300

I have an HP All-In-One 1210 printer/copier/scanner. It's one of those sub-$100 cheapo machines. So spending $50 on a pair of ink cartridges that only last me a few months isn't worth it. I looked for an alternative and decided to give those ink refills a try. Because I know that the print head is on the ink cartridge for HP, so even if the ink refills suck, I'm only losing $20 and won't damage my printer. I looked on eBay and found this seller with a perfect feedback selling ink refills. I gave it a try.

Needless to say, at least for HP ink cartridges (my printer uses 56/57), his ink refill kit is marvelous, and it's easy to refill. I can't tell the difference in the refill versus the genuine carts. I printed lots of covers from the DS/GBA Cover Project, the quality (not that it was great to begin with, but the quality didn't degrade a bit) of the printouts remain the same. The kit I bought works for 3 refills, so I'm saving a good $130 to buy more games. :D Not all ink refills suck, just be smart about them and you can save money.

[/end commercial] :)

anyone know where I might be able to find one of these canon 1500's for less than 50?

The only place I found that had them in a B&M location was COMPUSA and it was 50, newegg.com has it for 49 with free shipping, but I am trying to do a little better than that
