W 12:42:28 [1:1:0] TOSHIBA DVD-ROM SD-R5112 1031 (D:) (ATA) - Actual Write Speed: 1,350 KB/s (1x)

any ideas?

Go to the drive's website and find your model. If there are firmware upgrades, get them.

If you don't know the model because it came with your comp, try to look it up on the comp. manufacturer's website. Sometimes they list the actual brand/model of the drive.

Otherwise, update the burning program/try another program. Try different brands of media. Check settings inside the program to make sure it burns at max speed.

Just do a search for your drive in google for a firmware update. It should give you instructions.

I for one, could nto upgrade my drive....it would not let me upgrade the firmware for some reason. So some of my 4X media only burns at 2.4X. Oh well, I may upgrade my DVD burner anyways to the Pioneer DVR-108 16X drive :)

its weird..i have a mad dog 4 in 1 dominator but it installed as a toshiba drive...could that be my problem?

arrgh this is so annoying!! i mean 4x is a decent enough speed for me...but 1x...55 mins per write is like TOUR-CHUR!!!(mst3k ref to those that got it ^^)

As suggested, the media isn't passing the pre-write test. In addition to checking for firmware updates, also check the drive's site recommended brands of media. There are different chemistries out there and not all drive makers test against all of them or only optimize for one.

If worse comes to worse, newer drives with much better specs are practically turning up in cereal boxes. 16X may be the max for a while until DL speeds catch up and DL bug issues are resolved. Much like the CD-R side the media is becoming maxxed out for reliable rotational speeds at a price consumers care to pay.

i found a firmware update released in july on the mad dog website. does the fact that my computer syas toshiba matter? the drive opperates perfectly in every other way except it writes slow

If it's the right model number there shouldn't be a problem.

Toshiba makes the drive mechanism. Mad Dog is just a packager like many brands. For every three dozens brands out there only one is only making the actual guts. For example, Lite-On is a huge OEM business despite being a minor brand.

I've never heard of Mad Dog, its possible they're a subsidiary of Toshiba. If that's the case, its normal for it to load as a Toshiba. But you may want to download the latest drivers and reinstall them, see what it says after that.

Can't help you there. I guess you can just look at the picture on the website and see if the box looks the same ...

I've only seen them in CompUSA stores. They list other outlets on their 'where to buy' page they're either non-B&M, not in my region, or don't carry Mad Dog in this region. By and large, they appear to be just another packager of OEM goods. Not necessarily a bad thing if they make an effort to stand out in quality of documentation or bundled software and accessories. There was one such brand that Fry's carried, Ikebana, that would get my highest recommendation if I had to nominate something for a PC upgrade installable by a novice, just because the instructions were so good.

I ahd the same problem a few months back with a pioneer drive. I finally fixed it by going to the device manager and uninstalled the IDE ATA controllers. After that just restart the computer and it will reinstall it automaticly. Hope this helps.
omg thank you guys sooo much!!

my burn times have been cut down from 55-60 mins to 15-20 mins!!!!
