Anyone playing Zelda: Phantom Hourglass right now?

I got this game when it came out and I didn't like it. I recently started it over (why I have no idea) and I'm having a blast. The Ocean Temple was repetitive and annoying but for some reason now I'm having fun seeing how quick I can get through. I just reached the 1/2 way point in the temple (the yellow warp) and I look forward to my daily work shit so I can keep playing. It is getting tough to finish in one sitting though - my legs are asleep right now!

I know it is a bit old but is anyone else playing through this right now? What do the ship parts and the power gems do? Also, are there heart containers other than the ones you get in the dungeons? I haven't come across any yet.

This is the last game I picked up for the DS when it came out - what am I missing? Professor Layton sounds good - anything else?

I don't recall what the power gems do, but the ship parts just allow you to customize your ship's look and stats, i.e. faster and more hp. You can find heart pieces I believe, but it's not quite as many as the usual Zelda per say.

If this is the last game you picked up, you're missing quite a few depending on your tastes; Professor Layton, Advance Wars, Kirby Superstar, Chrono Trigger DS...

Best game of last year, easily. For the DS, and probably in the top ten for me overall.

Chrono Trigger came out, which is a must no matter what.

After that, it was a bunch of RPGs that I don't care about, but everyone said The World Ends With You was good.

It's been like 15 years since I played Chrono Trigger. Maybe it's time to play it again. I'm going to pick up Professor Layton one of these days...

I thought Chrono Trigger was an RPG? No? Guess I need to look into that. Wish it were cheaper, though. So dang expensive, which is especially ridiculous seeing how it isn't even an original game - it ought to be bargain priced.

It is an RPG. Hence why I said "a bunch of RPGs I don't care about."

What is this? C'mon now.

Chrono Trigger for $40 is a bargain ($30 next week at BB) when you consider A) portability, B) new material, even if it is a little shallow, and C) the fact that a hard copy goes for twice the price on the SNES.

This discussion has gone on since it was announced. Why are you bringing it up now?

Glad I'm not the only one who liked it, the game seems to get a lot of hate around here. IIRC, getting a matching set of ship parts gives you a bonus... somewhere.

I started playing it again myself, quite enjoyable. I just finished the Ghost Ship for the first time and defeated the sisters. Now it wants me to go back to the ocean temple for more sea charts. After I got the temple, I didn't want to do the whole starting levels again so I turned it off. That was 2 days ago and prior to that I was playing every night for 30-45mins before bed.

Not sure if I'll pick it up again as I really, REALLY don't want to the same levels over and over again.

Shame, otherwise it would be an excellent pick and play game and a excellent zelda game in one.

The power gems upgrade your fairy. I remember the fire one made your attacks stronger, I think one of them gave you more defense, and the other let you charge your sword to shoot lasers.

Repeating the Ocean Temple seems bad at first, but then I found it to be fun, if not uber fun, because you look for new shortcuts each time. Mind you, if you don't look for those shortcuts, no, it won't be any fun! You can find new shortcuts because each time through you have a new tool/ability at your disposal that opens up new paths. So think of it that way and you may enjoy it more. Also, later on you do get to skip whole sections of the temple. I really liked Phantom Hourglass. Definitely up there among my favorite DS games.

I played about 2/3 of the way through and then I kind of quit. I just got tired of the fucking Ocean Temple, I really don't see any reason to keep going back there, I know someone at Nintendo had to think that was a bad idea. I really liked the game, nice continuation of the series but the temple ruined it for me.

I beat it a good while back. Easily my least favorite Zelda game (not counting the CD-i ones).

Hated the touch controls and going through the OK temple so much. Wasn't a terrible game, but I didn't love it like I do most Zelda games.

I made a thread about this game about 8 months ago. it's a great game. I have no idea why there are complaints about the temple. Each time you go through it, it is a different experience. This is where I would usually insert an insult against these teenagers with ADD who can't finish a 10 hour game, but I will refrain. This game is one of the best Zelda games, period.

I just recently started playing on my DS again, and started this game for the first time today. I just got the second map peice and am having fun with this game. I have a bunch of DS games that i own that are still in the shrink wrap. I opened up Phantom hour Glass, Contra, and Hotel Dusk all recently.

I recently tried to re-play it, and it starts off ok, but it gets annoying. I hate the hourglass stuff, and I hate when I have to constantly look up where to go next in the game.

Just got a DS a few days ago with Zelda to go with it. Was cheaper than Chrono Trigger is really the only reason I got it but so far I quite like it although it took me for ever to figure out that I actually needed to blow into the mic to put fires out. Wish I had a Wii for Wind Waker though so I could get some back story play. Alternatively would be nice to have Wind Waker on the DS instead.

Thanks for refraining.

It's nothing to do with ADD or attention span. I'm 30 and love Zelda games. I just didn't enjoy this one as much as most other games in the series. I didn't like the touch controls (made the series already simplistic combat even more simplistic), didn't think there were enough dungeons, and got tired of the OK temple mainly because I hate stealth and it was annoying to have to sneak around everytime until your last time through. I also don't dig cel shaded graphics much.

It was an OK, but I just didn't think it lived up to games like Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time etc.

I'm not with Zing's mindset at all, but did really like Phantom Hourglass. Just depends on what you like. I liked the touch controls quite a bit and found them fun. If you don't like them I can see that that would really put a damper on the experience.

I've actually been playing Ocarina for the first time (on our N64) and I... dare I say it... am pretty disappointed in it. At least so far. I probably need to give it more time, but I'm really struggling with it. Partly it's the problem of dealing with the graphics, even comparing to Gamecube era, but it's not just that. I think the main problem for me with Ocarina is that it is a 3D game. I really hate fighting the 3D perspective. It takes me out of the game and I'm not enjoying the experience very much. I'm sure I just need to give it more time, but I actually stopped playing a while back and haven't played it in months. It hasn't drawn me back to it because it has yet to be very much fun. Pretty disappointing, especially for such a loved game, and especially since I do really enjoy the 2D Zelda games. Go figure. EDIT: I have yet to play any other of the 3D Zelda games.

Ocarina of Time is beloved by all, but especially by those who played it when it was first released. It's an excellent game, a masterpiece even, but its graphics and sound are dated. So many excellent 3D action-adventures were inspired by it; after playing some of those in recent years, I can imagine how the grandparent of 3D action-adventure games might fall short of the hype, especially if you're coming to it for the first time.

I love the game, but love its ambitious / underrated sequel (Majora's Mask) even more. I played both of these games when they were first released, so those memories play a big part in my enjoyment. With many games you really DO have to experience them when they first make a splash in order to fully appreciate them.

I just got to the Goron Temple and I'm still going strong. I should have the second pure metal soon enough. After that I might go on a treasure hunt since I have about 10 or 12 red "x" marks on my map that I have to take care of. I also would like to find an extra heart container or two for my ship since I still only have the original 4. Finally, I have over 10 power and wisdom gems so I need to go back to that island and level up. I also haven't been to the OK temple in a while! Good stuff.

OK, this is annoying. The final boss is IMPOSSIBLE to beat in one work shit. You have to go down the OK Temple again and then do a bunch of shit, then there's a cut scene and then there's MORE shit to do. 30 minutes in the can is about all I can do here people. WTF???

I got thoroughly absorbed into Phantom Hourglass over Christmas. I had a blast playing it and it was the Zelda game I've swore at least and enjoyed most since Four Swords.

I initially hated the Ocean Temple, but got over it. The challenge and enjoyment there is not doing things the same time each time.

I stopped at the last Ghost Ship battle. Couldn't get past it and couldn't see how. Shelved it to work on Chibi Robo Park Patrol.
I've had the DS closed for weeks without having to charge it.
Wow really? The battery doesn't die?

I finally finished it. There is a save point halfway through the final boss fight which helped. I enjoyed it a lot more this time than when I initially picked it up. I'd probably rank it higher than the Minish Cap. I also didn't find a lot of heart containers - I was 5 short of filling the second row. Oh well.
