Anyone pre-ordering Dawn of War II?

I really like the multiplayer beta (writeup here), and I can see the single-player being even better. (I only ever played CoH on LAN with friends at a slow pace; online was too hardcore for me).

Does anyone know if the disc-based version will integrate with Steam a la Football Manager 2009? £35 on Steam, £23 on Play.com! No contest really!

I suppose it doesn't actually matter either way, because it has GFW Live built in for finding friends etc.

I don't think that the retail uses steam. I think they just used steam for the beta as a way to give out keys for the game. Its going to be great to only use GFW so I stop getting disconnected every time steam wants to do some maintenance on something.

I played somewhere around 65 games during the beta not counting all the ones where we just won because everyone on the other team dropped or I crashed. It is a great game and I hope they can work out some of these major crash/lockup/disconnect bugs. It will also be nice after people figure out that maybe they need to turn their graphics down so they don't lag the game.

The actual gameplay is great and the changes they have made over the course of this open beta have been not that bad. They really nerfed the heck out of some of the Eldar units but once you get to T3 and can D-Cannon it up and pop out an Avatar then it really turns around.

I think the orcs are the hardest to play in T1 since they don't get any sort of stationary gun team that can suppress nor do they get units that move much faster than normal ala the Tyranids. In T2 though once you can get out some Tankbustas and a Def Dread you can really start to do some damage. I know that they also made the waaagh somewhat less effective of a skill in one of the patches but it still works well.

I can't wait to see how it all comes out in retail and how the single player game works. Just one more day to wait though. Woot!!!

The retail version will use Steam, which is great if you're looking to save money :D

FEAR 2, Empire Total War, and DoW II all use Steamworks. After FEAR 2 was released, it was added to Steam's CD key registration page. I expect the same to happen when DoW II and Empire are released.

Does it have to be connected to steam? As much as I like steam it feels like the way they have it connected really sucks. Its actually booted me out mid game when they have to make changes to the friends list server and stuff.

You can run Steam games in offline mode. You have to connect at least once to verify the game through Steam.

I pre-ordered Dawn of War II from GS since I had a little credit left. There are a few additional colors for armor and some exclusive wargear that's supposed to be available for pre-orders from GS. I guess that's good enough compensation for me to live with waiting until Wedesday to get my copy.

I didn't really like it after playing the beta. It seemed like it needed too much micro management. It was like an RPG x30. I like RPGs, but I don't want to have to tell 30 guys when to fire or throw a grenade.

It took me half a match trying to build buildings that there were no building to build. I really don't like the design in general.

Ah well thats not so bad then. I guess the beta was set up so you had to be connected to steam online to play it at all times.

i downloaded the beta but didn't play it. it sounded awesome when i first read about it. i was excited to only be responsible for squads and not have to worry about base management and economy. that's always been my weak point in RTS games. Hell, i'm a weak RTS player in general. That's why this excited me so much.

Then i started reading all the comments about it, people being unhappy because there wasn't enough strategy and no buildings to build. That was encouraging and then people started mentioning having to micro the squads like crazy. That worried me a bit since i'm still not too quick with the tactics management thing.

Basically, it feels like RTS games are completely wrong for me, but i still like playing them. I suppose i'll still buy this and just play the single player and skirmishes. The online competition is not for me. WAY too competitive. I'd be smashed to bits and humiliated.

wow that is exactly how i feel lol, although sometimes i do venture on to battle.net to play DoTa only to get smashed over and over again lol. I love playing RTS games over LAN with a group of friends though, so that and the single player mode make this worth buying for me even if i don't play online.
For me the beta was a lot of fun and a great change of pace from the regular RTS games where there is a lot of building
This game is much more fast paced

I feel the exact same way. I've bought all the major franchises - DoW1, CoH, RA3, C&C, but I don't think I've actually played any of them online. I get through the single player and move on...

Same here. World in Conflict is a notable exception -- that game is a blast to play online. 8 vs. 8, no base building, awesome nuclear explosions.

I'm hoping for a good WiC deal on Steam when the Soviet Assault expansion is released next month.
