It portrays a day at a High School which culminates in a Columbine-like shoot out at the end of the film. It was pretty good, but ended quite abruptly....I was expecting a bit more.

Anyone else see it? Your thoughts?

It must have been slim pickins at Cannes last year if it won the Palm D'or. Between this and Gerry, Van Sant seems to want the French to love him by making uneventful films.

the fact that they gave the kids relationship homosexual overtones was really fucking stupid; the columbine kids (and all the shooting kids) have never been gay. it was supposed to be to show further isolation from society, but I think it could be construed as "gay people are bad" by the casual viewer

I rented it about a month ago just to see how a famous director like Van Sant would handle the controversial subject matter. I found it interesting but a bit slow. Because of the ensemble cast, you get to know all the characters a little bit but not nearly enough to care about any of them, and by the film's end, you're left with a lot of loose ends and no real answers to why any of it happened. I realize that's what the director was going for, but I guess I was hoping for something a little more profound.

Yeah, I thought it was pretty strange too, especially since the director is gay.

i think it was more to say something like gay kids in high school have it even harder than the other kids who are ostracized and picked on. i still think it was unnecessary, because that's not something a lot of kids in high school can relate to. i'm pretty sure that most of the outsiders in high school aren't gay, but then again who knows.

i was really disappointed in the film. i almost went to see it in theaters when it came out, but a few people told me it wasn't worth the $8, and since they usually know what they are talking about, i skipped it. i finally saw it about a week ago, and wasn't impressed. i liked the part where the three girls go into the bathroom, just because it was unexpected (and kind of funny). when the first girl got shot, it was kind of cool, but not in a "oh my god i can't believe this" sort of way (lke the director was probably going for), but more of a "yeah, rock n' roll!" sort of way. i'm just saying that the director tried to make us care about the kids in that school, like they are just normal kids and they were just going about their normal day and we should feel bad or shocked about what was happening, but i didn't feel that way at all. the kid with the blonde hair annoyed me, and the kid with the camera annoyed me even more. heck, even the shooters annoyed me. it was just an annoying school.

i did like how we got to see how everything happened in the same time span from different points of view, but again, it was about kids i didn't care about and a story that wasn't very interesting.

I dont even know if they're gay or not. It may have been a last day alive type of thing... like "We're either going to kill ourselves or get locked away in jail, or put to death, so we might as well." I did kind of think it was odd though. It wasn't expected.

In general, it was a good movie, but I probably won't watch it again.

I thought it was pretty good, if you liked that movie you should watch um the secret lives of alter boys, or was it the secret confessions of alter boys?
Also thirteen was ok, might want to take a look into that.
besides the fact that thirteen has to do with teenagers, it doesn't have very much in common with elephant. thirteen was a far better film.

Ya know I haven't seen this movie yet. It looks like it would be a very interesting flick. A few of my buddies have seen it and they seem to have mixed feelings about it.

This movie sucked. After I finished watching it I wanted my dollar back. Half of the movie is just a behind the back shot of the kids walking from one place to another. Nothing really happens during these walks, it doesn't add anything to the story, it just chews up time. I can watch most movies and find enjoyment in them, but this movie simply crawled along and had no real redeeming qualities.
