If you don't like Fergie then you should definetly see it. If you're willing to spoil it, click to see what happens:
A bunch of zombie things drag her across the road and rip all her organs out. You see her later with out the back of her skull, or her brain.

Good stuff.

I totally agree. If I paid $7.00 just to watch Planet Terror and the fake trailers, I would've walked out and said that was the most fun I've had at the movies in a long time.....then came Death Proof. Man. I think the ultimate problem with the film is that it came after Plant Terror. With Rodriguez' movie, you had nothing but action, blood, gore, one-liners, and great great pacing to keep your attention.

Then with Death Proof, the movie comes to almost a complete hault. We're given MAYBE 20 minutes of suspenseful car chase in total, the other 70 minutes is filled with pointless pointless dialogue. Now, I'm one of Tarantino's biggest fans, and in his other movies, the pointless dialogue provided some great entertainment and some of the most quotable lines in movie history. But with Death Proof.....man. The pointless dialogue really was pointless. I was actually beginning to get frustrated because I wanted the film to go somewhere.

Ultimately, the payoff scenes in Death Proof (although they are pretty fucking awesome) do not offset the other 70 minutes of film.

I'd give Planet of Terror an A+

and Death Proof probably a C or C-

I just got back it from seeing grindhouse and I loved it. I did enjoy planet terror but the dialogue in death proof did not bore me as much as it did the rest of cag. I say that both movies were pretty equal. DON'T not see the movie.

I completely agree, I totally didn't expect Death Proof to be so much fucking talking after Planet Terror was balls to the wall action and gore. I actually started looking at my watch for the first time all night after 20 minutes of talking, talking and more talking. Somebody in the audience summed it up perfectly by screaming " Missing reel!" during one of the super pointless conversations about nothing.

And quite frankly I thought Machete was the greatest trailer known to man, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time, I gotta recommend the movie just for that

I just got back from seeing this. Planet Terror was awesome with the action, but Deathproof gave me THE best payoff for a movie I've ever seen. At the end of it, it was the first time I had ever given a movie a standing ovation.

Oh and in Planet Terror
I laughed my ass off when that dumbass kid blew his own brains out, and what's-his-face with the butterfly knives fucking up zombies in the hospital was the badass moment of the year

I posted this in the OTT last night, but it deserves a place here too:

"I'm eating your brains to gain your know-ledge."

It's a little to early to know for sure, but I'm starting to think Planet Terror is going to be my new favorite movie of all time.

I saw a screening last thursday at 12:00. Didn't get out till 3:30 a.m. Needless to say I wasn't happy with the way Deathproof dragged though I did appreciate it. I loved Planet Terror, the trailers, and the first half of Death Proof. Also during the movie the projector shut off and we weren't sure if it was part of the movie. Good times. Highly reccomend you go see this.
wtf? Blades of Glory was #1 this weekend.

It kinda of hard movie to gage, due to its length, they can't show as many screenings as they can of Blades, so the potential for it to make tons of cash is limited, hence the use of non- "a-list" talet and filming in Austin, Texas. Saving money from the start makes it easier to shop a 3 hour movie to the theatres. A good example of this was Men in Black 2 they knew the moive was god awful so the director cut it to 80 minutes so they basically load it in theaters on opening weekend to try and milk all the money they would need to break even in two days.

Oh and I enjoyed Grindhouse, saw it on Saturday

Oh man! I forgot about that line. My friend and I were utterly ROLLING after that one.

What about Titanic then?
What about Titanic then?
Titanic had a broader appeal than Grindhouse, and there is an exception to every rule :p

How many people are going to see the commercial for Grindhouse and go "Ahh! An homage to exploitation films!" ?

It's just not as accessible as other movies, such as Blades of Glory.

I can't stop listening to Chick Habit.

Similarly, I hope they eventually ship out the Hobo trailer to US theaters. I'll pay to see the movie again for that.

in general QT and rodriguez movies (minus spy kids) haven't really grossed well at the box office, so the poor box office isn't surprising. usually their movies are low budget tho so even tho they make only 60-70 million they're still profitable, but grindhouse cost 53 million to make so thats prolly why the media is considering this a "flop".

in order to make back its budget they would prolly have to sell almost 100 million at the box office. the only movie of QT to make > 100 mil was pulp fiction , jackie brown was only 40 mil, kill bills were about 60-70, res dogs only 3 mil

i just think his type of films don't appeal to a broad audience

Oh god! Robert Rodriguez made Spy Kids?! I never knew that. He seems....less cool now :whistle2:?

I'd say he more than redeemed himself with Planet Terror.

Yeah you're right. Plus he's got Sin City 2, Sin City 3, and Machette in the works. I guess I can forgive him.

You know, spykids/sharkboy etc. are terrible movies, yes. But he actually explained the reason he makes those movies is just to experiment with different effects/greenscreen things. If those weren't made, sin city wouldn't have been made. Why not make money off of experimentation?
Titanic had a broader appeal than Grindhouse, and there is an exception to every rule :p
Indeed - Wombat you are spot-on in your analysis.

Titanic opened near the holidays and even my mom liked Titanic, there is no way in hell my mom is going to go near Grindhouse.

Plus - Grindhouse opened on Easter weekend - that was a piss poor choice for an opening weekend, as many in the target demo probably are spending time with family, and as mentioned before said family members are most likely not interested in cheap thrills.

I have a feeling that when all is said and done, Grindhouse will make a nice chunk of change. You know that, relatively speaking, way more ppl are going to buy a Grindhouse DVD (especially when you factor in the eventual double-dip DVD releases)

I wouldn't be surprised if they released Grindhouse on DVD, then released the full length versions of both Planet Terror and Death Proof seperately, and then finally a set containing all 3.

Saw Planet Terror for the second time last night and noticed that there is a Deathproof reference in it. Anyone else catch it?
This was filmed in Austin? Cool.

I'm probably going to end up going next week.
Guero's (I hope you know what that is) is actually on the poster. :D

See, that was my point. If a movie appeals to a broad enough audience it doesn't matter how long it is, it'll make money because theaters will compensate by putting it on more than one screen. If every single showing throughout the day was sold out for Grindhouse then its length would be what's holding it back but that didn't seem to be the case.

Unfortunately it just didn't appeal to the masses. A lot of the tongue in cheek horror movies are completely ignored by the general movie going public, that doesn't mean they suck, it just means the masses don't like to mix horror and comedy. Snakes on a Plane, Cabin Fever, Army of Darkness... All these movies were great horror comedies but didn't do shit in the theaters.
