The scam in 'Office Space' was based on several real life incidents going back to the late 1960's. The trick was that in high finance the calculations went down to fractions of a cent although people below a certain level only ever saw numbers rounded to the nearest cent. Over time this adds up to quite a lot. Not so much from the corporate point of view but for a single person enough to retire to the right foreign country.

The first few guys to do this got away with it not because they weren't caught but because there was no specific crime they could be charged with without making the financial institution guilty of the same crime against their customers. So some lobbying money went to Washington and a few new laws were enacted and others tweaked. MIS guys kept trying the scam before automatic safeguard became effective but now there was a real penalty involved if they were caught.
