Anyone watching Rise of the Video Game on Discovery?

Looks like I just missed it. Any idea when/if it reruns?

Edit: Got my answer, 11PM EST. Gotta make sure to watch that.

I was able to catch the last half. The ex-Atari guy, man, he was hilarious calling out profanities left and right. Does it make me a bad gamer if I didn't know that Tetris was from the USSR? Very in-depth look at gaming history, I liked it. But then, I like the history/discovery channel stuff in the first place.

Nothing I didn't know (I spend more time studying videogame history than I do playing games these days), but not a bad little doc.

I can't handle these video game documentaries that have Nolan Bushnell (Atari Jerk) as a feature interviewee.

He almost single handedly killed the video game market, and then screwed investors out of much moolah with his half-baked late to the party ideas. But he still has the gall to act arrogant during interviews.

I doubt the genius even played video games, considering his incredibly bad insight of the video game industry.

Didn't help to have John Romero as an expert about the industry considering he hasn't had a success since splitting with Carmack (sp?).

Yeah but you gotta give him credit for Chuck E Cheese's, man.

Just got done watching it, I really enjoyed it...

And thanks to the power of the internets I was able to watch it without commercials.

This is a 5 part series, oh fuck yes. It's sad although I did enjoy the first episode I already knew most of the stuff said on that episode, lol.
For those that missed the first one, it airs again tomorrow at 11:00 am(I guess eastern time).
THANKS... i saw some of it, but lost intrest. It's funny, I was never aware about the video game crash during the 80's.... but back then Transformers, GI Joes, Ghostbusters, and heman cartoons were way cooler then that. :)

I believe this program was produced by Jeff Healy from gamehead, I remember listening to a podcast the major nelson one, oopsss....and he interviewed him, and he said he was doing somthing for the discovery channel, I believe, not sure if it is from him...so....

Yeah... that happened a bit before my time, I started gaming in the NES era. Thank god Nintendo revitalized the market, and also put in place quality control, which isn't saying much considering how many crappy games the NES had (but it wasn't even close to the absurd amount of crap the 2600 had available to it.)

no matter what, every generation has some shitty games out there. Thankfully it's not enough to cause another crash...but this current generation war is getting really, and I mean really ridiculous with these different models and SKU's. Eventually someone is going to exit the market, but Sony and MS is being way too stubborn..and now that the next generation HD video format war has begun...both sides are strongly going to back up there respected HD formats with Sony going BR and MS going HD. Nintendo is just sitting on the sidelines with there "cool" gadget systems but it can only last so long before they run out of ideas and need to focus on HD graphics and gameplay.

It's only a matter of time before Nintendo decides to back one of these company's and help develop a system that will out do the other one.

Anyways I *missed* the rebroadcast again ...argh. :(
Funny thing is back then when I played ET on my cousin's Atari 400, it was a fun game... Didn't know that it would be considered the worse game of the 80's.

Atari had ALOT of shitty games. That generation takes the cake.

While the first episode was interesting, I thought the second one really lost its focus. In the first segment, it was hard to figure out exactly what they were driving at at all. Then they proceeded to skip around to different points in time all willy-nilly - if I was watching the program as an average person and not a gaming enthusiast, I would have been extremely confused by this point. Finally, they crammed several generations of technology into the last half of the show. Was this the last part of the documentary? They were so detailed last week! What happened?

The thing about Sony & MS is that they've got a shitload of money to fund their respective warchests so this format war could drag out for a while w/ no clear winner. I do agree that if Nintendo does side w/ one or the other, it could be the only way to decisively win. Hell, I think if some other big company, say Google (why not? They're already doing everything else  ), decided to enter the videogame industry, it could have a bigger significance than an already entrenched company. Though, to be fair, I doubt Nintendo will side w/ anyone anytime soon anyway as they've got a sizeable warchest themselves.

Did anyone watch the second episode last night? I tuned in right at the beginning and heard this awful, annoying voice and i just couldn't put my finger on who it was talking, then they showed the person and it turned out to be david jaffe. people earlier in this thread where getting mad that nolan bushnell was in the first episode, but IMO, the show has lost all credibility having david jaffe as one of the interviewees.

"Jumping for coins was out; Jumping innocent bystanders was in."

I think they are rushing this series too much, they went from the beginning of video games to modern day and they have three more episodes left.

It's true they had David Jaffe on but it was only for a few seconds. But what's up with showing a glimpse of Tim Schafer at the beginning and then not having him on again? He would of been perfect for the "story in video games" part of the show, also no showing of any LucasArts adventure games? :nottalking:

Anyone else notice that Peter Moore is already doing his EA job by raving on about how "You can't tell the difference between real football and EA's Madden!"
Just a heads-up, the last episode aired tonight. I missed episodes three, four, and five. I'll just download them today.
this wasn't a new weekly program?!?!? awww :(

it was ok... when they got to the MMORPG part, I thought they were going to go all out on World of Warcraft without mentioning any other MMORPG like SWG or Matrix Online.

The first episode was great. The second episode was allright. The 3rd, 4th and 5th episodes were bleh. Too much focus on one specific subject for a whole hour long show (and the big landmark titles were only included anyway).

I'm with you on Nintendo. Nintendo pretty much marches to their own drum. Everyone was going CD, they stuck with the cart. When they were forced, they came up with their own mini-disc for the Cube. With the Wii, they go against the graphics trend, and go with an interesting controller, even knowing that the 3rd party market would be thin.

It wouldn't shock me, if Nintendo was forced to move up in graphics, that they wouldn't come out with their own format. Nothing Nintendo does really surprises me. But, I doubt they'll back either side.

In all honesty though, I don't know what will decide HD/BluRay battle (if there is ever a clear winner), but my hunch is it'll have little to do with video gamers (since, eventually, most gamers will likely get a PS3 one day, much like they'll have a 360 and a Wii, most gamers will want to play the games on those, once the systems are cheap enough.
