Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Several of the Kemco/Kotobuki RPGs are down to 99c for the first time. I've played some of the earlier installments and if you enjoy RPGs they were fun if a little repetitve. A caveat though: the earlier games did not offer IAP. These newer ones seem to and I'm not sure how that affects the game play.

Hmm. How do their games look on the ipad? I know some of the iphone games that are now 'universal' apps just look terrible on the larger screen.

All I want to say is F U Apple, and F U game devs... My 6 year-old is crying about getting in-app purchases that I will not allow him to get. This will end up in the iPad being taken away from him and me being the bad guy. Worst idea ever in gaming.
i totally understand. I've had to take the iPad away from our 5 year old a few times for that exact reason. Kids don't understand that most of this stuff is a complete ripoff and we end up the bad guys to them in the end.

These are all "retro" 2D games so don't have high expectations of the graphics. I bought one of them and the graphics look OK on my ipad but the scrolling is rather choppy, as with all their games.

Jelly Defense is the free app of the week at Starbucks. Pretty good tower defense game so far, the gameplay reminds me of Kingdom Rush.

I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but Worms 3 appears to be on sale for $0.99 from $4.99 on the App Store. It didn't say for how long, though.

I've had no luck finding any Starbucks with the jelly defense codes. I'm not one to beg here on CAG but if someone could grab a extra for me that would be awesome & much appreciated. I'm a sucker for TD games and will likely buy it if I can't get a code.

I'm looking for an Ipad Air, what's the cheapest way to get it?
Assuming you're wanting a new one, you probably won't find one on sale at a retail store. Don't think stores are really allowed to do non-Apple-approved sales. If you know someone that's attending a university, though, might want to check with them. My university partnered with Apple to do $50 off all iPads and $100 all MacBooks until the end of the school year (so...may be over now, not sure).

I just checked and ohio state is only giving 25 bucks off ipad's, it'd actually be cheaper on Amazon cause I don't have to pay tax there.

Does anyone know if Meijer's 20 percent off deals work on apple products?

You go to OSU? I live in Pickerington. I was just down in campus area yesterday.

you can try and get lucky on a return/refurb. I bought a returned air and luckily microcenter forgot to get the original owner to unlock it before it turning it in.  So they watched him to do a system wipe, but that doesnt matter since the next time you turn it on it will still ask for the previous owners appleid and password.  Since they had no way of actually unlocking it they just gave me a new one

Best Buy has been running sales on iPads upto $50 off--they just ran one a few weeks ago, in fact. These keep cropping up every couple months, they're not nearly reduced enough for my tastes though. Like with (almost) everything else on this site, the longer you wait--especially as new models are announced--the better the sales tend to be.

Ebay is the best place if you want to get a brand new iPad really cheap, especially if they have daily deals from buyers like Altatac and Beststopdeals. Make sure you check buyer feedback before buying your iPad Air, of course. To give you an idea of how cheap the iPads can be had on eBay, I bought a 128GB iPad 4 4G LTE GSM Unlocked model brand new for only $600. Came in perfect condition. So it's best to get your iPad Air on eBay, but try to buy from Top Rated Sellers, and if you can, check for Daily Deals, especially the money saving Deal Frenzies. I've seen Altatac sell the 64GB iPad Air for a really good price on one of those.

GPlayer is currently free. Itunes claims it "offers in app purchases" but I don't see anything listed on the itunes page. Does anyone know what the iap is for this?

Dude at $.99 anyone who does NOT buy Lords of Waterdeep is clearly not right in the head, :)

In addition to that though I'll add that:

Agricola is on sale for $.99 - http://appshopper.com/games/agricola
Fluxx is on sale for $.99 (been free before). Great if love a card game where the rules constantly change on you! - http://appshopper.com/games/fluxx
Tanto Cuore is on sale for $.99 (been free before). Another great title, just like Dominion in that it is a deck building game except with an anime theme - http://appshopper.com/games/tanto-cuore
Food Fight is on sale for $.99 (been free before). Never played it but it is by Playdek so that's reason enough - http://appshopper.com/games/food-fight-ios
Nightfall is on sale for $.99 (been free before). Again, never played but it is by Playdek - http://appshopper.com/games/nightfall-2

Enjoy!

Any thoughts on Warhammer? I missed it when it went free but .99 seems fair to support the devs a bit.
It's... okay. I played it pretty heavily when I first got it, but then quit after a few hours invested. It reminds me of the old gold box D&D games. The IAP for the game is new character classes. The equipment drops for those classes are significantly better than the base four - yes, equipment is class specific, and you'll just sigh with disappointment when you get their awesome sword or whatever, while still waiting for something better than the stuff you start with.

But if you're okay with that, there are two down sides. One, random events happen all over the place, and they seem to be about 75% negative. Either your character gets a stat penalty for the next dungeon, or you'll be trying to finish off that last boss character when nine more enemies spawn in. Two, if your party doesn't finish a dungeon, you get absolutely nothing out of the time you spent in it - no XP, no treasure, nothing. I don't have an issue with that particular design decision. The problem is that you cannot save inside a dungeon (so if the app terminates for memory purposes while doing something else, you just lost) and the difficulty spiked faster than my equipment and abilities, and my characters started getting wiped out.

Oh, and once you are in a dungeon, all movement is turn based. If you go down one branch of an intersection, you have to move each character individually over turns to slog your way back.

I liked warhammer quest, I usually hate iap but I enjoyed it enough to buy two dlc packs. It does get repetitive but I think it's worth a dollar to see if you like it.

Now that I think about it, that's probably the app I've spent the most on, 5 for the game and 5 for each dlc pack

Thanks for all the Warhammer input. I knew I'd be picking it up, but I needed a CAG's point of view before pulling the trigger.

I missed Lords of Waterdeep too btw. Caught sleeping!

Warhammer is definitely worth the plunge @ $0.99, who knows if/when it will go free again. Some of the criticisms are fair, but overall, it is a good game.

I missed the Lords sale as well, can't believe I don't check this thread more often. I always miss a good sale/freebie when I go a few days without looking.

I picked up the Star Wars game for 99 cents as well, hope it doesn't completely suck. It is mainly for my son, but since I like SW too, I will still check it out.

Unrelated: I love Boardgamegeek reviews as you can get people who just tear apart some of the greatest board games out there. Agricola is one of the highest rated games on BGG with good reason but if check the bad reviews you can find people who just plain savage it with wit. None of that stuff you see in vidya where "Oh, the genre isn't FOR you." It's "This genre sucks because X, Y, Z."

Played Republique Episode 1. That sucker cooks my Iphone 4s like it was on a stove. The reviewers are all absolutely nuts. ESPECIALLY that IGN twit that said it was about finding strength or something and the others who say this is a look at the surveillance state. It's fricken not. It's dumb. The whole world is still kept largely behind the curtains and what they do show is inconsequential. It feels so small and cramped and I still don't even get the purpose of this facility. The headmaster is cool but isn't even close to as eloquent as Breen is.

But that's all alright. That's just to say those idiots praising it are wrong. I'm great with 90s sci-fi movie schlock. Even if you can't capture the seductive allure of "Man, I could run this country better than these idiots around me" in your surveillance state, at least you can just use it as a playground to have fun. And they do. The writing and voice work are great fun. Nothing happens though and nothing is even close to hinted at in this opening act and it certainly isn't enough to get me to buy the whole thing. Maybe on PC after it is confirmed the 5 episodes are satisfying.

Still, fun enough. I liked what I played.

Hope is the platonic ideal of a damsel but not an actual human being yet. And there's absolutely no sense of danger because
nobody in this game is actually trying to kill her.

Another great Halfbrick game, Fish Out of Water has dropped to free for the first time! Jump on it!

http://appshopper.com/games/fish-out-of-water-2

And their latest hit Colossatron is also free for the first time! Appshopper hasn't picked it up yet but on the app store it is free.

http://appshopper.com/games/colossatron-massive-world-threat

A bunch of their other classics are also free once again:

Fruit Ninja : Puss in Boots
iPad   http://appshopper.com/games/fruit-ninja-puss-in-boots-hd
iPhone/iPod   http://appshopper.com/games/fruit-ninja-puss-in-boots

Fruit Ninja

It seems like EVERY Halfbrick game is free today; albeit they all have always had a ton of IAP. Weird...
