General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

If you didn't like the gameplay of the first, I don't see how you would like that of the second or third because it's pretty much more of the same. A little tweaking, refining here and there, but mechanics still largely the same.
You could also be like me. You loved the first for the spectacle and glamor but the second made you realize how threadbare and grindy the mechanics were.

Would like to see Jet Set Radio and the resident Evil games go on sale to $1 I've pretty much picked up everything else I could ever want lol.

Ascendancy is .99, was one of my favorite PC games growing up. At least I finally have an ipad so I can play the remake, was pissed they only did it for i* products

I KNOW!. I just clicked on AppZapp and saw Skulls of the Shogun and grabbed my iPad immediately, no introduction of in app purchases or a premium version just instant free with no mention in the game description...

Actually came here to see if anyone else saw it and to see if this was some kind of mistake and if they'd still honor it.

SOOOOO glad I waited.

My company's game, Breach & Clear, is currently $0.99. Outside of the IGN promo this is the cheapest it has ever been. It's a solid tactical strategy game based on real-world Special Forces. There's a ton of authentic gear to customize your squad with and the moment to moment gameplay is quick and fun. Please consider picking it up if you've got a spare dollar.

Also, would love to see Saturday Morning RPG and Breach & Clear added to the OP. I'm obviously biased, but both games have been well-received and they're made by a CAG. :)

Breach & Clear ($0.99):

Skulls of the Shogun is absolutely amazeballs on PC. Not sure how the iPad version plays, yet, but I just picked it up. Thanks for the heads up.

This 12 Days of Gifts thing confuses me.  The internet says that today it's supposed to be an episode of Once Upon a Time but the app's giving me Tiny Thief which I got free last week.

Are you non-US? It said some things may not be available in all regions, so if your non-US maybe they give you tiny thief instead?
Nope, I'm US and selected that as well when I started the app up. Not that I'm torn up about not getting that episode but it will be interesting to see what I get tomorrow.

It showed up for me as a once upon a time episode but then changed to tiny thief

I'm in Murica as well

And now apparently with ads as well

Also, not a sale, as it's always been free, but Where's My Water 2 has removed the F2P timers from the game.
Not sure what app you're thinking about, according to AppShopper this has never been free before now:

App Activity:
Dec 28 '13 $4.99 -> Free
Nov 03 '13 $.99 -> $4.99
Oct 25 '13 $4.99 -> $.99
May 13 '13 $2.99 -> $4.99
May 10 '13$4.99 -> $2.99
Apr 24 '13 New App: $4.99, v1.00

That is wrong. Where is my Water 2 has always been free. They included tons of purchases and annoying bits (alligator is tired bs) to get you to do IAP. All the other person was saying is that they removed the 'tired' bs from the game. At least it should be playable now.

Sanges99 is talking about House of the Dead.

They're both talking about different games. Thrakker is talking about WMW2, but Sanges99 thinks they're discussing House of the Dead, and is listing HotD's sale history.

Yeah but the original statement was, "Also, not a sale, as it's always been free, but Where's My Water 2 has removed the F2P timers from the game." - clearly talking about WMW2.
Which is why I didn't respond to Thrakker's post. I was only clarifying for Sanges99's behalf. How did this thread get so confusing all of a sudden on something not confusing?

Yeah I guess I am wrong here, I read Thrakker's comment as HOTD: Overkill - Lost Reels as the one he was saying was always free and the comment about WMW2 was just an aside.

Wow, sorry for the confusion my poor diction has caused.  :)

Also, I agree with how good Rayman Jungle Run is. Now if they could drop the price on Fiesta Run, I'd be happy.

This gift app is pretty fail for gaming so far. Gave away Tiny Thief when it was already free and today's gift of the day is... Rayman Jungle Run!

I'd really love for them to give away that Disney Animation Studio app ... you know, so I don't have to spend the $10 on it that is getting closer and closer to leaving my itunes wallet ...

For parents and anyone who hasn't seen the beautiful Pixar short, La Luna , the interactive storybook is free ATM.

It includes the full short inside as well, and a neat storybook.
