General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Somehow I missed that the new jailbreak for iOS 7 released. Backing up my devices and getting ready for the update. So exciting! I can finally take my iPhone in for a warranty repair/exchange this weekend (power button wore out on me and I refused to take it in and risk getting a replacement device that had a higher firmware than jailbreakable).

Is jail breaking still worth it these days? I jail broke my iphone two or three generations ago and was sort of underwhelmed, am I missing out?

Depends on what you use it for. I use it primarily to unlock the 3G limitation (50MB is still absurdly small) and customize the look of my phone (new skins/fonts/Lockinfo!!). I do like to use tethering as well.

The limitation is so strange, particularly if you are on a carrier that allows tethering. Oh, 50MB cap? Good thing I have my laptop with me; tether, download in iTunes, sync. Hassle.

The 50MB cap I was referring to is iTunes' app size download limit. My carrier (Verizon) I think has a 2GB minimum for tethering. When I said I use jailbreaking to tether I meant that I use a tethering app to get unlimited tethering that I don't pay extra from my carrier for.

The cap is 100MB these days though your point is still valid. They at least let you buy/stage the download so you dont have to worry about missing sales or freebies.

Im going to jb my ipad today and see how stable it is before putting it on my phone

They bumped it to 100MB? Nice. Did not know that. 3G Unrestrictor allows for the download of anything off the App Store so those monstrous apps are no problem.

I'm doing the same. My iPad is always the guinea pig for updating and rejailbreaking.

In my attempt to sound as ungrateful as possible ... Man, this 12 days of gifts thing has been a real bust. It's not a gift if no one wants it ;)

if I didn't just have a kid, I'd agree.... I feel like all this stuff is directed towards 0-13 yr olds.... But still can't complain with free...

I've seen appzapp mentioned in this thread, but I can't seem to find it on the app store. On the apple site, it says it isn't offered in the US store, and searching on my phone it doesn't even come up.

Damn - what have I missed? I have 3 kids in that age range. I don't even know what 12 days thing you guys are talking about. It seems every time I check this thread it is just about price drops. I did see the Rayman post but I think I already had that free from some previous promo. In general it seems to me that there are fewer free apps than a year ago (I mean ones that usually cost money but are free occasionally). I figured that was due to the move to more "freemium" games - so the days of getting a great regular paid app for free via specials and promos will soon be a thing of the past.

I read they were removing it for breaking the rules, but it'll come back when they figure out how to make apple happy. Same happened with app shopper but it came back worse in my opinion. Apple is scared people will think these apps are app stores selling games.

A quick search in the ol' thread search box at the top of the screen produces this link from a couple pages ago: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/12-days-of-gifts/id777716569?mt=8

Starting the day-after Christmas, Apple has been giving away a little bit of content every day through this app; we've had Justin Timberlake & Kings of Leon live tracks/videos, a Sesame St episode, Tiny Thief and Rayman Jungle Run--off the top of my head.

Apple has a "12 days of Christmas" app in the store that gives away a bit of free content everyday from December 26-January 6. If you downloaded it early you got a song and music video download from Lorde. Probably the highlights of what it's given away are Tiny Thief, Ray man Jungle Run, a copy of the movie Hugo (great movie IMHO) and some tracks from Justin Timberlake. The rest was a lot of little kid content.

Just finished Skulls of the Shogun after it was free. Beat it and am now burnt out, but enjoyed it. It's pretty tough and I had to save at the beginning of every turn just in case the AI steamrolled me.

Also random, but it was awesome to get an archer with red attack potion and upgraded with 8 attack and one-shotting calvary.

Well ... that's that ... the Rolling Stones round out the 12 days ... so much for the infinity blade III or Disney animation hopes ... oh well.

Cool, How long did it take you?

Yeah it satisfied my strategy fix. With the second island expansion in addition to the main campaign, about 10 hrs. Some levels took 40 mins. Either because I sucked or spent time leveling my units. Almost every map ended with my victory mainly from the AI running out of rice and playing the endurance game, so if you played more offensively you could finish faster. Great game though!

Super Stickman Golf 2 is going free for a limited time starting on the 9th when the update hits. Everyone get that game, it's really, really good!

Crap like that should be illegal and regulated by apple. Shame.

I've long thought that Apple should have a category for quality games. I guess ask a submission fee, give the games greater scrutiny (to insure there are no major bugs, it's not just ripping off Nintendo or what ever, it's actually a real game, etc...), the games would be required to not make certain changes to pricing for X amount of time (for instance, a $5 game couldn't go free a month later, or a paid game couldn't go to freemium).

I think there's not much to insure buyers confidence in iOS games. Why pay much, if you know they might put in ads or basically make the game unplayable with an update?

It's really gone to ridiculous levels. Looking at my games folders on my ipad and iphone... well... it looks like I've basically given up on actually playing games on iOS:

Quality on the iTunes Store has gone down considerably.  I rarely buy games any more.  I NEVER buy them at full price anymore.  There's almost always a sale within the first 6 months or a major pricedrop.  And this freemium conversion has been worrying (WWZ is hardly the first).  It is not acceptable to have a specific product you pair for be changed in such a dramatic fashion.  I get bug updates.  I don't get how a game that previously had something available, now become a pay2play.  I wouldn't have "paid in" if that were the case.  Seems like a good legal "bait and switch" case.

I used to buy a lot of games, now I just wait for them to drop price within a few weeks. I may not even buy them at that point, unless it's something I really want and think I'll actually play. I probably only ever launch 10% of the apps I download.

I'll be buying the True Skate DLC coming out this month though!

There are still a bunch of high-quality games I really want to play on iOS that I have yet to buy: Year Walk, GTA San Andreas, Device 6, TNNS, Republique, etc. However, I'm not playing much of the games I own, so even with a bunch of credit from Christmas, I'm not buying things. I mean, I barely played The Room or Deus Ex, or even much Vice City. So why would I buy similar games, knowing that I haven't played much of ones I already own?

That's not to say I'm not playing games on my iPhone and iPad (though Zelda:LBW is taking up much of my portable play time). Rather, my backlog is too big to worry much about bringing in new games. Like how I only bought 1 thing from this year's Steam sales. iTunes credit may go to more morning musume songs...

Same here, unless a game is super cheap or free at this point I have no real interest in buying them. Between xcom, ascendancy, ticket to ride, and a couple others Im set.  Heck the one I play the most is probably BF4 commander anyway and that one is free

I too have a huge backlog for ios. I should only put one game at a time to commit to. It's hard when ios games seem so casual and so I put consoles first.

Side note, I really want Year Walk, Device 6, and Moviecat.

Yeah I really just play 3DS these days.

Side note, I really want Year Walk, Device 6, and Moviecat.
I'd just like to note that Simogo (Year Walk, Device 6) has never put Beat Sneak Bandit on sale. Kosmo Spin has been free ONCE (back in summer 2011) and Bumpy Road had exactly three price drops to .99, but all of them were back in 2011.

So I think it's safe that if you are ever in the mood to play one of those two games, you should just buy it. I'm not in the mood RIGHT NOW so I'll still wait until I am (maybe I'll get lucky?!).

I don't disagree, envelopes. It's not like I'm waiting for those games to go cheaper. I'm just waiting for a time when I'm like, "I want to play this NOW." I'm sure it'll happen. Ya know, after I beat Zelda: LBW, play Steamworld Dig, play through VLR a few times, etc. ;)

Yet another testament to how foolish it's starting to become to pay full price on day one. Four days to drop from $2.99 to $.99.

And it's happening more and more often. Yes, it's just two dollars lost. Add that up over a year and, it's not such a petty sum anymore.

I too wish Apple would do something to force devs to have to wait a certain period to have a sale. And absolutely forbid paid to freemium conversions.

If I may chime in here. I just want to say I agree with the very early price drops and the paid to freemium conversions. Speaking of paid to freemium conversions though, I don't see exactly where Apple could do anything about them. I mean sure Apple could say that devs can't make their game permanently free BUT what stops that dev from removing or no longer supporting that app and simply release a new, identical, but free app on the App Store?

On another note, though, there is still plenty of quality on the App Store IF you just look. For me I love board/card games and if I may, you can find plenty of good board/card game conversions on the App Store. For example,

Carcassonne (my favorite and one of the best examples of a quality app you can find on the App Store)
Ticket to Ride (Ticket to Ride pocket if you want the iPhone version)
Settlers of Catan (Yes I know it doesn't currently have multiplayer but the devs have said they ARE working on it)
Pandemic
Forbidden Island
Lost Cities (Currently iPhone only)
Fluxx
Small World 2

what stops that dev from removing or no longer supporting that app and simply release a new, identical, but free app on the App Store?
A couple of my favorite apps have done this to me and pissed me off. They update for so many revisions and then the updates just stopped. I start looking around to find out the developer has released the exact SAME program, under a "slightly" different name and is continuing the updates on it. I was very VERY pissed. But I use them so I kicked a couple of extra bucks in to use it. That's not the case with games where I play them and forget them.

And I own almost every one of those games. Though I still prefer Neuroshima Hex.

Kind of off topic here, but since this is an iphone thread here goes. How come many of the apps for the iPhone (i'm on a 5S with IOS7) seem to ONLY be in portrait mode (craigslist, ebay, theScore, Expedia, etc) when on my old Android they displayed perfectly in landscape mode which I'm used to using while holding the phone sideways with both hands.

Chatted with apple last night and they mentioned that a lot of developers put their apps only in portrait mode? Really? Is this because of IOS7?

Thanks all and looking forward to the sales for this thing.

I'm glad that apple doesn't force developers to wait to have a sale. That would be anti-CAG. Buy the game you want for the price you are willing to pay for it. It's always been foolish to pay full price on day one.
