Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Its good to know Im not the only one who got sucked into full price for FTL. My ipad sat on my desk at work all day, with the ftl page open, begging to be bought, and in the end I couldnt resist

This is true.  I've been eagerly awaiting its iOS release since it was announced last year.  FTL doesn't seem to find its way into my Steam playing time as often as I'd like and I've come close to beating it, but never have on several occasions.  Now I'll be able to not beat it more often, now that I can take it with me.
Hmm... I am damn insightful when I drink. Sadly, the bottle is empty.

I paid full price without hesitation. I wrote them about a year or so ago that if they released FTL for the iPad I'd buy it day one.

I'm a man of my word.

IGN's free game of the month is Epoch 2: http://www.ign.com/prime/promo/epoch-2

However, be aware that at the moment the page is not working ("error retrieving code" for everyone). They should have it sorted soon, hopefully.
SON OF A $#&%*! Leave it to me to buy it when it was on sale for $0.99 last month thinking it won't be free anytime soon and here we are at the April IGN free game of the month already. I know it was only $1.09 (NYC tax) but the CAG in me cries at buying something right before it goes free. That is the exact reason why I haven't quite pulled the trigger yet when I saw Rayman Fiesta Run drop to $0.99 this morning... that nagging feeling that maybe Starbucks or IGN will have it soon or heck the app will be free for a short time.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping will happen with FTL. I've gotta say, I'm exercising tremendous restraint. I figure, if I have a jonesing to play it, I can pull it up on PC. But I'm REALLY hoping it will go on sale soon.

Pssh I'm still waiting for a Simogo game. Now that's an exercise in restraint. Still $4 and I'll take any price decrease at this rate.

Year Walk might get a drop being on Steam now. I don't see Device 6 or Beat Sneak dropping. (Device 6 was absolutely worth it)

I liken the issue to the Nintendo removal of their seal of quality.

Apple let's ANYONE develop apps.  I get why, but it leads to nothing but Chinese knockoffs.  The couple of good games that are developed are lost in the shuffle.  There's only so much time to devote to gaming in a given day and iPad has not exactly been at the top of releases lately.

For the same reason, I stopped looking at TouchArcade all-together.  Everyone is copying everyone else in the hopes of making a pay day.

And honestly, there aren't that many GREAT deals going on.  Most of these apps launch at 5 bucks, burn those who most want to support them.  Then go on sale for a buck.  Then they change to free with ads plus an ingame purchase to unlock the ads that you already paid full price for in the beginning.

And the nickel-and-diming of the F2P games is just horrendous and needs to be quelled somehow.

For example:

http://appshopper.com/games/flying-hamster-hd

Lauched 4.99, 2 sales back to back within a week of launching(3.99, 2.99), free for the first time within 3 months,  it's been a rollercoaster ever since.  On sale this week... for FREE.

That's a pretty ignorant and racist thing to say. I'm pretty sure it's not only the Chinese that are able to program apps for iOS, and if you look at the credits of most A list games that aren't "knockoffs", there are Chinese programmers there as well. I personally take offense to that statement just hearing the narrow-mindedness that thought comes from. I know a couple of guys who are great app programmers and aren't Chinese. I also see a lot of F2P garbage that weren't made by a Chinese programmer. Bottom line, if you have nothing smart to say, just keep it simple and to the facts without any racist/bigoted spin on it. I'm not trying to take away your first amendment right, but you simply could have posted "...nothing but knockoffs of popular games..." and that would have conveyed your opinion. Thank you.

I don't think it's racist in any way, people fling the racism thing around far too frequently. China is notorious for selling counterfit products. Chinese knockoff is pretty much part of the vernacular now. When China actually makes strides to stop counterfeiting maybe attitudes will change.

Shall we go through each of these games? Let's see. All but one is free. Most of them are CLEARLY knockoffs of some other game. Let's go look at the creators? Huh, 8 of those creators (without delving into LLC/INC ownerships) are clearly of Asian descent. Granted there's a single Korean mixed in there. But since I was talking about the entire process of knocking things off in GENERAL and not saying Chinese specifically (though we can CLEARLY see the Chinese knockoff trend)...

Missing the point of my response but if you want to hang on the Chinese thing then go right ahead. And this is why our fellow CAGs who make apps will never be big stars with top 10 apps in the app store, because they are not Chinese? Right...

Wow you're out there. American cars are poorly built. How's that for racism!

I think you're the one missing the point. It's not racist, it's judgment against a specific country (and a fairly valid judgment, at that). Ask virtually any Chinese person not from China, and they'll be glad to tell you in detail just how bad China is. Says the half-Chinese person from America with countless Chinese friends and relatives scattered around the world.

I turned wiki back on. I'm not sure why it keeps getting disabled.
It seems threads that were created prior to the 3.0 update and/or not originally a wiki will randomly drop their wiki status. Creating a new wiki thread from scratch seems to be the only way to get wiki's to stick.

It was said, during one treat ion or the other, over on the XBL DOTW thread that if you edit/ revise a wiki thread without including a "reason for editing" in that box then it kicks-out the Wiki flag. How true that is, I haven't tested but thought it was worth pitching that out there.

I've tested it and it hasn't been true as far as I can tell. I took over a couple threads that were made wiki'd post 3.0 and they randomly dropped status. The one time I actually saw it drop was due to several edits in a short span of time. Other times the threads dropped status with no edit action at all. I've now recreated those threads as new wiki's with me as the OP and they've held fine. The one time I lost status was my fault. While editing (not wiki edit, but thread edit as the post creator), the This is a Wiki checkbox became unchecked (due to a quick re-edit) and I didn't notice.

Epoch 2 is pretty fun and has good graphics...but it crashes sooooooo much. It's almost unplayable due to continual crashing which restarts the game and levels which you had prgressed mostly through.

Had no idea Sean Bean is the narrator in Papa Sangre 2 and holy crap in their other game Nightjar it's Benedict Cumberbatch. Whoa.

Agreed. When did everyone start getting overly sensitive and misconstruing intent? Anyways, this is CAG, not "politcally correct gamer"

So trials frontier is fun, but this is one of the few ios games that i would have gladly paid 5 - 10 bucks for a non freemium experience with no energy or wait restrictions.  Bike Baron was free for me too with no restrictions and i dont see that much of a better game in trials than bike baron.  However if you can stomach the fremium restrictions it is a great game.

Thanks for the heads up on trials. Played for a little while earlier. It's not bad but it's definitely not the trials I have grown to love. Virtual buttons are not a great substitution for a controller but it'll hold me over until the xb1 version comes out. Really looking forward to the next set of extreme tracks.

Edit-ok after spending a few hours with it, it's awesome! fuck the gas cans though, I'd rather have paid to get unlimited runs. I've ways disliked the whole wait for energy (gas) thing. The game itself is a blast and I highly recommend it to trials fans...hell everyone should give it a try, trials fan or not.
