Apple Game Center

Apple Game Center allows you to keep a friends list, track your in game achievements, and compare with your friends. Many games support this.

Make sure to checkout the official CAG Game Center Exchange Thread. You can post your game center name and see the names of your favorite CAG'rs.

General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
~ (symbol beside the "1" on standard US keyboards) are iPhone 6/6+ optimized. Note that apps that are iPhone 6/6+ optimized are by default iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

I second the Monster Hunter recommendation. Best version of the game I've played personally. Easier to control and better graphics than anything on the PSP and better IMO than the 3DS version. If anything, it would be great to see the 3DS version get an ios port somewhere down the line. Plays great on both iPad Air and iphone 5.

I have a hard time pony-ing up for yet ANOTHER version of the same MH game that's been rereleased over and over.  Especially at 15.  If you've played one, they're all the same, just slightly different controls.

Starbucks stores have codes for the app "threes" now. Can't confirm myself, but there was a notification from touch arcade about it.

Yeah, those were last week's freebie in stores. If you are looking for one, you may want to check soon, in my area, they change on Tuesday.

Threes! down to $0.99

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id779157948?mt=8
Wtf?! I bought this at a much higher price! I demand satisfaction!

J/k - I actually am one of the few that got tired quickly of this game. It's probably the only time that the collective praise of cag has let me down.

It seems everyone must take the entire stack of cards at my local Starbucks. There is only 3 in my town but they're all gone within a day. If anyone has an extra code for Threes, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I've gone to 6 around here... 4 of which are typically good about keeping a couple off to the side for people.. and Nada. I'm a wee bit disappointed I can't get this for free.

New in-store card at Starbucks is Charlie Brown's All-Stars.

Edit:  If I see any Threes still around I'll grab some.
I meant to grab the Frozen Storybook after work and I forgot.. boo :(
If it makes you feel any better it's not that great, my nieces didn't like it very much and they're frozen junkies

Yeah, I'd appreciate a Threes code too if anyone is able to get a stack. Asked a friend of mine to go and his Starbucks still had cards for Time Surfer, which i got months ago.

Thanks for the heads up on Monument Valley

50%.  The IAPs are unnecessary but if you want more cards.  And frankly, you get a LOT more cards easily enough.

Personally my game of the week even though I paid full price for it.  (followed by Threes which is good but I'm not good at it yet)

(I'm on zone 12 and already bought 2 of the legendary 50 gem packs)

Red Johnson's Chronicles is out on iOS (iPad). I played it on PS3 and have it on PC. It's a fun take on a point and click adventure. Now I just need it to drop to free so I can complete the hat trick.

IGN's Free Game of the Month is OTTTD (Universal) which was just released a few months ago.
Hmmmm, for some reason when I click in and out of the link to get my free game, they keep generating new keys. Be that as it may, if anyone is looking for one after the free period is over, can have a code. Dunno how long this will last,or if the keys are legit, but anyone who wants one after the fact is more than welcome to PM me.

Liberation Maiden appears to be on sale for a $1, which is the cheapest it's been so far. It's a goofy shmup made by Suda51, originally as part of a set of 3DS games published by Level-5.
In my eternal waiting for this to drop to one of the two appropriate iOS game prices (0.99 or free) I ended up buying it on the 3DS. I wonder if I should buy it again!

Just got back from vacation last week and almost forgot about checking for the IGN free game of the month. OTTTD is pretty darn fun. I enjoyed the hell out of the 2 Kingdom Rush games and have been looking for something to get my td fix and this hit the spot real good. Wish I had this on my iPad Air before the flight(s)! For those who still haven't redeemed a free code from IGN, get on it! July is almost over! Here's the TouchArcade review:

http://toucharcade.com/2014/06/20/otttd-review/

And again the direct page to get a free code for OTTTD:

http://www.ign.com/prime/promo/OTTTD-free

And since I accidentally clicked on the code generation button, here's the code it generated, if you redeem it then say so and don't be the dbag that snipes codes:
