General iOS FAQ

1. Make sure to check for periodic updates either in iTunes or on your iOS devices. For each release of new firmware, there's usually a bunch of games updated right afterward.

2. Some applications also go on sale by their authors when they reach 1 million download and similar milestones.

3. Apps often have specials the day before, during, and after holidays, regardless if said game/app is related to the holiday. Most notably is the fact that many developers discount their apps for Christmas and because Apple employees, in charge of App Store changes, take a break during the week of Christmas these discounts usually last until the new year.

4. Newly released apps will often have a % or dollar amount off for a limited period of time to gain a large following quicker. While browsing the app store you can go to a particular type or genre and order according to release date. This can make finding new app discounts faster.

5. Apps can be re-downloaded from your iOS device. To do this open the App Store and look for a tab called "Purchased". From here you can re-download any previously purchased apps.

6. I strongly advise not to buy iTunes Gift Cards by 3rd parties unless you know they can be trusted. Retail stores and receiving cards as gifts are the best ways. There are many credit card scams, stolen cards, hacked cards going around, especially on Ebay.

7. If you are the victim of a iTunes Card scam or get your account locked due to one not all hope is lost. Apple has been fairly lenient on these issues. Call Apple directly at 1-800-MY-APPLE or check the iTunes Store support page. Also going to your local Apple Store to discuss it can help. The account locking is an automated process and can be reversed. This can take time so be cautious if you use gift cards from 3rd party sources.

8. If you somehow break your iOS device, you have some options. If you bought the Applecare warranty it should be covered for most items. If your Applecare ran out or you don't have one, try using one of the repair guides on iFixit to repair it yourself. Apple Stores have been known to give discounts if you bring in a iOS device that they will not fix since it's not in warranty. This discount however is very small.

9. Using a screen protector can extend the life of your device. Most stores carry these, but they can be hard to install. The best I have personally used are made by a company called Power Support. They have both clear and anti-glare protectors. They are easier to install because the protector is a firm yet thin piece of plastic. Griffin Technologies and Zagg are also very good.

10. Universal Apps have a small plus sign in the upper left corner next to their price. They can be played natively on both the iPad and iPod/iPhone. iPhone games that are not universal can still be played on the iPad with a lower resolution. Non universal iPad games cannot be played on the iPhone.

Games by Genre as Recommended by Fellow CAGs

Feel free to add games, genres or move titles as needed. This list is to give CAGs a chance to catch up on high-quality games they may have missed and to get new users started on "can't miss" titles to download for their new iDevice.

Green titles are universal (ipad and iphone/ipod touch).
Italic are iPad only.
^ are retina optimized for the iPad.
* are iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
~ (symbol beside the "1" on standard US keyboards) are iPhone 6/6+ optimized. Note that apps that are iPhone 6/6+ optimized are by default iPhone 5/5th gen iPod Touch optimized.
Some game developers/companies like to offer free versions which are usually demos of the full version and a great way to check out and determine if you will actually like a particular game without paying anything. These demos are noted as such. Some game developers/companies like Zynga, however, like to offer free, AD-Supported, versions of their games which means you get the full game, but it features ads and by buying the paid version you remove those ads. AD-Supported games are noted as such.

Hey! That's My Fish is $.99.
The art style of the physical board game version made me assume it was a children's game for a while but the praise on BoardGameGeek for it finally got me to try it. The comparisons to chess are kind of apt: it is definitely a strategic abtstract that require a lot of thinking to win, depending on your opponent.
No online MP though, looks like local device MP only. Better than breaking out the boxed version and spending 5 minutes setting up the ice flows.

Here's hoping some more of Fantasy Flight's iOS board games go on sale. I would love to play Elder Sign on the go (though I understand there are some rule changes from the physical game).

I'm with you on wanting Elder Sign to go on sale, :). Speaking of table top games though I wanted to point out for all my fellow board / table top enthusiasts that this past Wednesday the amazing developers of the game Carcassonne released their next new expansions for the game bring along several general updates as well.

This time around they brought the winter edition of Carcassonne to the game which includes the powerful Gingerbread expansion. They also added the option (you got to pay for it of course) to double the base game tiles. In addition to the two new expansions they added support finally for the new iPhones. Oh and before anyone asks if it is a bug only the base tiles are winter themed they didn't add the winter theme to the expansions because none of the expansions in the physical game have a winter theme.

For those wondering, don't expect any kind of sale on this game, but, for me, these devs do such an amazing job that I never feel bad paying full price for their work, :)

I already got a $15 iTunes card for Christmas but I have no space to add games. I might get an iPad mini 3 next year so I'm thinking about Bastion. From what I read, it's also coming to PS Vita next year. Can anyone recommend the iPhone/iPad version for 99 cents?

I don't think it works on the iPhone, but if it's as great of an iPad port as most people say it is, then yes. Don't remember what I paid for the PC version, but it was more than $0.99, and worth every penny.

Thanks. 99 cents isn't bad. And, it's not that I'm cheap, but I haven't bought anything on iTunes in over a year since my iPhone 4S is only a 16 gb and full right now. Between the Xbox One and the PS3 I bought over the past two months and various games that I've picked up along the way, I've spent too much to buy an iPad Mini right now, so I can wait until next year.

I see Kingdom Rush Origins as 2.99?

Also does anyone else feel like 7.99 for an HD sprite version of a twenty year old SNES game is sort of...overpriced?

dont ask me why but  was able to buy a  new kindle 6  for 54 bucks  even though i have last years model. Sort of a waste of 50 bucks but figure  the new one can play  some  games the older one cant (like puzzle quest 2 and  some other games the older kindles cant handle)

Plus im sure i can get 30 or 40 bucks out of it in a years time   so mostly only paying like 10 or so to rent it

I've bought Leo's Fortune and Castle of Illusion for 99 cents this week, both are dope but Castle of Illusion is unforgiving.

NBA 2k and NHL 2k are both half price at $4.  Bought NHL, graphics are not great but has modes that EA was not able to put in the PS4 version.  Bioshock is also on sale for $5.00.

Terraria is actually a far better game on ipad than it is on pc. The zoom feature is great and for .99, it has a tremendous amount of depth. For a game I didn't particularly enjoy on PC, I'm having a blast with it on iPad.

I disagree. While I thought it'd be awesome, I find the iPad to be less inviting for Terraria. The controls specifically aren't as precise. Especially with mining for long periods, and attacking things seems very hit or miss.

I have the same issues with Junk Jack X. I feel like it's a disservice that it isn't on more platforms.

To anyone that owns Banner Saga, worth it for $5?
Works great on newer hardware and iPads. I tried on my iPod touch 5g and it stuttered ever so slightly. Happy to support the developer though, but I guess I had a better experience on the laptop.

Great game and the port is faithful. The sequel was announced as well since it is a trilogy.

I agree, PC or console controls are much better suited for this game IMHO.

Awesome to hear,I appreciate the reply thank you.

terraria supports mfi controllers, which I know not everyone has or wants, but it solves the touchscreen control issues which I agree aren't the greatest.
At some point I may pick up one of those.. but my pad comes with me where I go.. if I wanted a controller, I'd sit down at a console or on my laptop, or desktop, eliminating the usefulness of the pad.

The zoom feature on the ipad is quite helpful for strategic mining and the bow can be a bit of a pain, but fighting most enemies in Terraria just involves spamming the action button to swing. I've been impressed thus far, but as with anything in life, it's not for everyone.
