I was in my local Radio Shack to pick up the 11 dollar PSX to USB adaptor (part# 26-304). Before going down to the store I called to see if they have the item in stock, they did, and I asked the clerk to put the item aside for me.

One hour later, I'm in the store, the only customer with five employees. I ask for the part. One guys interrupts, "Yes, we have USB".

I say, "LET ME Continue; it's a USB to playstation converter". Four employees look around for it. The only girl employee just stands there and stares.

The look around the small store for five minutes while I'm at the counter. The girls starts playing a handheld game, as I grow impatient.

I look around and find it myself. The employees look embarassed and seem to disappear in the back room. Now, the gameplaying girl is taking the time to ring up the purchase.

Total time=12 minutes, for what should have taken two tops. Jesus, remind me NEVER to go to Radio Shack again. I remember as a kid the store hired nerds and was a guilty pleasure for me. Those days are gone.

I always seem to have problems at Radio Shack. They had a coupon in a booklet in the store for $10 off any toy. Nowhere did the coupon state a minimum purchase was required or that it did not work on sale/clearance items (which corporate confirmed since this was I think 2 years ago and posted on FW so people who had the same problem called corporate and were told it worked on any toys in the store). Store #1, refused to let me buy a $5 item, Store #2 refised to let me get a $10 item on clearance, Store #3 almost refused to let me get a $15 item on clearance but they eventually let me buy it. Store #4 let me get a $8 item without any problems. So at 3 out of 4 stores I went to, I had problems. I try to avoid them whenever possible.

I haven't been to one in quite some time. They have nothing I can't get somewhere else, at a cheaper price.

Haha, that is how it is at all Radio Shacks... I am surprised they are still in business... you walk in and NO ONE asks if you need help... and there are always at least 3 people, even though the stores are fucken tiny... like a one bedroom apt.

Stick with Circuit City.

Your experience isn't unique. I have a number of Radio Shacks near me, and I've only been able to get competent help in one of them. And, even at that, I had to get the employee to stop talking to his girlfriend on his cell phone so I could get my question answered. All the others, nothing.

What does the Tandy Corporation make nowadays anyway?

That's wierd, every time I go into my local Radio Shack they won't leave me alone. Within 30 seconds I'm greeted and asked if I need any help. After reading this topic I'm starting to think I must look like someone who needs a lot of help, or like I'm going to steal something.

Aside from the marvelous acknoledgement, there's not much more. Sales clerks barely know anything about electronics, especially in the rear of the store for us 'do-it-yourselfers'. It's always in disarray, understocked or not stocked at all. The Shack used to carry a TON more electronics parts for the enthusiast than they do now. I don't know how they stay in business either, I just get most of what I need online.

I guess they had to make cutbacks considering all the commercials with Shaq & Howie Long.

But i respect them because they are still in buisness.

my dad came real close 2 yelling at one of the guys there hitting on one of the girls behind the counter...task requested..to ring him up...time taken, close to 10 mins O_O..radio shack is goin down hill

I might be showing my age here, but at least they don't ask for your address and phone number anymore.

I do have to stick up for one in downtown Pittsburgh (on Forbes Avenue). The staff there is very good.

What did you have to do in the other 10 minutes? You at least got what you wanted, they weren't like, sorry we made a mistake.

Radio Shacks are usually franchises so it'll be hit or miss from store to store. My old employer had several businesses and one of them was the local Radio Shack. Yes, the employees were worthless. The only saving grace amongst the whole crew was that the manager was a hottie. I think one of the VPs (who was a brother in the family that ran the aforementioned businesses) nailed her.

I find that with a store like Radio Shack, when you want help there is nobody around -- but when you don't they are all over you. I can't stand walking in and someone jumping out with "hi, can I help you?".

I remember when I was real young, Radio Shack used to have "free battery" cards. Every month you could get a free regular battery (like a 9V, C or D) and they would scratch off the month on your card. The batteries lasted about 10 minutes.

Glad to hear they don't ask for your name and address any more. That was so annoying.

I was talking to one of the employees about that, actually (the one I mentioned that was competent), and he said that it's generally the smaller Radio Shack stores that keep larger selections for hobbists. I was complaining that they only had two sets of those drawer-things they use now, and he said that there's another store about 15 minutes away (which makes it a total of 45 minutes away from my home, just too far to go for me) that has five or six of them. He mentioned that usually there's one store in the region which will have a lot of them.

jshawnd, do you know how the one up in Squirrel Hill is? I'm more likely to be up there than on the Pitt side of Forbes and I'd rather not waste an hour or two walking there and back to see if it's a bunch of morons inhabiting the store.

Also, I remember them asking for phone numbers as well. Ugh, really annoying. I could swear I remember them asking for my zip code last time I was in the store (I should really just memorize some info for a person in Alaska just to mess with 'em).

How long ago did they quit doing that? I think they asked me my info about two years ago; I told them "John Doe 123 Main St." ;)

Sorry, time is important to me. Where do you draw the line and say, "that's excessive?" If I was there thirty minutes, an hour, five hours? I'm sure you get the point. I don't like to waste time.

You can do lot's of things in 10 minutes. Some people have sex and make a new life in ten minutes. Others can take someone's life in a much shorter time frame.

You are never guarenteed life. You could be dead in the next ten minutes. Would you have liked to spend your last time on earth waiting at Radio Shack?

Yes, very annoying. I haven't been to a Radio Shack in YEARS. I'm perplexed why it hasn't gone out of business already.

Hey guys i work at a radioshack and we work on commision so that is why you get swamped when you enter the store lol.
All that i really do is sell cell phones all day to ppl.
Radioshack has gotten out of the hobby crap and now is just mainly about cell phones, every day my manager tells me to sell x amount of cell phones and blah blah blah......

anyways funny shit about the other radioshacks

I don't go into Radio Shack anymore because of a similar experience. It's kinda like K-mart now to me in the sense that, at most, I'll go into there once a year.

My Radio Shack is so small, but they have six people working there. I hate the store because you can't even walk in without being attacked by the sales people. They are WAY too eager to help you and will not leave you alone for two seconds. The store is always deserted, and if you try to look at something, you have like three employees right behind you staring at you and asking a thousand times if they could help. I try to avoid Radio Shack. I really don't understand how they are in business.

Guess I am in the minority, my Radio Shack has always been good to me, there is one manager that helps me everytime and I am always checked out promptly. So I dont know why your Radio Shack sucks, but mine is the shit...

agree...the guys at my shack were on top of it when i discussed my wired home network. they showed me the rj45 outleet covers and line couplers. they seemed to be pretty up on all the current computer and techno news. I may have had a different experience because these guys look like retired engineers (which there are hundreds in my town).

I question if this is just Radio Shack! A lot of stores have bad customer service: ever try to get help at WalMart, Target, Home Depot, etc. When you finally get someone how often do they actually help you.

What I was trying to say is that they help you TOO much. They are like vultures. You can't walk in the store without getting attacked.

I was talking about bad customer service in general, my local radio shack doesn't have good service.

Maybe because I am talking on the cell phone, they figure odds of selling me one are slim. I will hide my cell phone next time and see if its different.
