Are backwards compatibility and SACD support coming back?

I want to buy a PS3 sometime in the future, and I would love it if I could get one that had hardware BC for PS2 games, and support for SACD playback.

Has Sony made any indication that these features might be coming back in future PS3 versions? Or are they most likely gone for good on new models?

100% Hardware BC is NEVER coming back (way too costly unless people are willing to pay $600 again for a PS3, because that's about how much it costs along with other features to make it happen). It was discontinued back in March/April 2007. 80GB PS2 BC (which is 50% hardware) is good enough (one in the MGS4 or MotorStorm PS3).

SACD support, the last chance you get is in the MGS4 80GB console. I believe it has something to do with the 40GB using a cheaper blu-ray diode which won't play SACDs (I could be wrong).

All PS3 models still have hardware BC for PSX games, right? Any chance that could be the next feature they decide to drop?

didn't they use software emulation to run some PS2 games..? i think they can bring it back via a downloadable update in the future..

I don't think any system has ever had 200% backwards compatibility.

It cost $0.00 to implement it since it's completely software (just write the code, no extra hardware needed).

The emulator within the 80GB is ONLY for the EE (Emotion Engine CPU), while the GS and other components are still needed. The issue is (from what I hear) that 100% software emulation for PS2 games is up in the air whether it can be done on PS3 (the biggest challenges are the cell is quite difficult to work with, especially since it has multiple processors, instead of being more unified, and the GS has a really high fill rate (higher than the RSX, from what I heard)).

I edited. I meant 100% (typo).

The PC has PS2 emulators and they're far less powered then what the PS3 is. If you want to get a PS2 emulator, you need to hand this over to RAND of Former Bleem fame. If anyone can do it, he can.

I still think they are going to come up with a PS3 2.0 w/ PS1+PS2 backward compatibility once the PS3 tech is cheap and they want to consolidate manufacturing.

It's probably just wishful thinking though.

Exactly. QFT

I think it's coming. They're probably extremely quiet on it because it's probably not far along because they're not devoting a lot of resources to (they're working on Home). I think you might see it 3-6 months after Home launches, maybe even from the Beta launch.

If anyone remembers who RAND is he did the UNPOSSIBLE on the dreamcast. Made a full speed emulator of the playstation on dreamcast. Not only that but made his own copy protection which was superior to sony's to make sure it played only legit games and was able to do it with only 200 mhz and 24 mb of ram. NOW THAT is legendary programming. Plus the fact that he did it all in SH4 assembler.
