Are DS games really *that* good? I need a new GOOD game...

I bought a DS Lite the day it came out, and along with it I've amassed a little collection of games (that CC $8 clearance sale helped).

Problem is, I really haven't found many games I've really liked. Here's the list of games I have so far (and my comments):

New Super Mario Bros. (was fun until I beat it, then not so much)
Tetris DS (fun for 1-2 months...)
Brain Age: Train Your Brain (loved Sudoku, haven't played in months)
Mario Kart DS (meh, played Mario Kart 64 to death, didn't feel like unlocking everything again... don't want to pretend I'm 13 again)
Mario 64 (current game I'm playing... trudging through but it's getting a bit repetitive)
Marvel Nemesis (god this sucked)
Trace Memory (beat it, a bit too easy)
Meteos
Metroid Pinball
Final Fantasy IV (beat it)
Final Fantasy Tactics (played a bit, but didn't feel like playing another FF before FF3)
Castlevania DoS (was pretty good but not stellar)
Phoenix Wright (totally cool)

So yeah... recommend me any games? I know of all the new games but I don't want another game that I pick up for 6-8 hours, beat, or get tired of. I figure that'd happen with games like Mario Hoops... and as such I've been hesitant to pick up Metroid or Star Fox. Cooking Mama looks unique, though.

I like RPG's, but I don't want to go through another SNES-style RPG.

Anyways, out of all those games Phoenix Wright was the only great game to me... the kind of game I couldn't put down unless I was too tired to go further (Castlevania's a distant second). Phoenix Wright took me a good week to beat and I was loving every minute of it. I want another, but every game I keep buying pretty much ends up eating $30 from my wallet and 8 hours of my time.

i totally agree with you about the DS games - lots of those games leave something to be desired.

i'm holding out for Zelda Phantom Hour glass, FF III and children of mana.
 
If you liked Phoenix Write, maybe PR2(J version). It's on the front page.

Not sure, I never played the first PR. It looks like you played pretty much everything I have.

Although I am currently playing with Animal Crossing. If you like games like that I could see that lasting a year. Star Fox is cool, with multiple endings. Also, it has Wi-fi multiplayer(which I don't have access too).

Maybe Resident Evil? I have it, and it is pretty cool(if you liked the original. It actually has 2 more modes that make use of the touch screen(albeit kinda dumb, I like the original mode better).
 
Well, you've missed out on Advance Wars, for one. Great if you like strategy games. And in that vein, if you love strategy games like me, you have Battles of Prince of Persia and Age of Empires. Not as good as AW, but not bad.

Kirby Canvas Curse was great for me until it started to get very frustrating near the end.

Daigasso and Ouendan are great games to import (or wait for Elite Beat Agents in a month or so instead of Ouendan) if you like music/rhythm games.

Cooking Mama is an excellent mini-game collection in the form of cooking recipies.

DQ Heroes: Rocket Slime is the most recent game I've played, and a great Zelda-style adventure game with what I would imagine is Pokemon-style monster/item collecting.

And if we're bringing up GBA games, there's a whole other assortment of games to discuss the merits of.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems as if your expectations are a bit high, or you're playing some games to death. Not many games for any system since the SNES have held my attention for more than a couple months or more than one playthrough, which it seems is what you're looking for.
 
TOTALLY forgot Advance Wars. I played that a long time. Big campaign, characters and stuff to unlock and create a map. Good call.

Canvas Curse was fun at first, but that lava board pissed me off something fierce.

Also, Jump Superstars is great fun as well. With characters from DBZ, Naruto, One Piece, and tons more. It was really fun, and I still pick it up now a year later. I see a sequel coming out soon as well for it.

Next game I pick up is Megaman ZX myself.

No kiddding? I played that board for like an hour straight last summer. Made me hate the game and I sat it down. I picked it up again about 2 weeks ago, lit a fire in me again. There are very few games that get a rise out of me, but that one got to me for some reason. That game is forever going to sit and collect dust.
 
I was also going to mention Canvas Curse. I was able to get through every level. Going through them straight isn't too bad IMO, but some of the challenges for the later levels are really really hard. I really enjoyed the mode where you use as little ink as possible. Gives the game a strategic flavor.

However you would probably either beat or be tired of CC after ~ 8 hours. I got more time out of it than that because I played through many of the levels with bonus characters and really got into getting gold medals, but that's not for everyone.

Zelda: Minish Cap (GBA game however) might be a good choice. Pretty long quest and I really enjoyed it. And if you are a completist there is a ton of extra stuff to do.
 
You know, this game doesn't get enough props: Tony Hawk's American Sk8land. The 3D cell-shaded engine kicks ass with a great framerate... there is digitzed music just like in the consoles... the world is relatively large and the gameplay translates pretty much perfectly to the DS. I used to be addicted to TH2 so I'm loving it.

Oh, it's also got Wifi play and Activision apparently lets you download new challenges to play (though I haven't tried this yet).
 
I agree with the OP. I have a handful of DS Games, but the only one I've really spent a lot of time with is NSMB, which once it was beaten/got all 3 stars got shelved. The other games I have are lackluster and don't really draw me back.
 
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time - awesome and a decent length. A very different take on an RPG.

Not quite as good a Superstar Saga but great none-the-less.
 
Although I haven't played it the new Mega Man game sounds pretty challenging...might want to give that a try.

2 games that no one ever mentions but are great unique games are Pac-Pix and Pac N Roll. Both are very short though. They could most likely be had very cheap though.

I'm currently playing Starfox and although it got mixed reviews I'm loving it right now. I'm going after the 2nd ending and I think there is about 9 total.

I also really enjoyed Tony Hawk's American Sk8land...it seemed to be a more comfortable fit than Thug 2 Remixed was on the PSP. I also liked the cel-shading. I'm actually upset that the next DS incarnation is downhill jam instead of sk8land 2.

I agree. I had a great time with this game. I really like the older THPS games and this was great. Sound is great. One of my top 5 for the ds.

Also Trauma Center is really fun. Something different.
 
jkam's post reminds me that I've wanted to get a copy of Pac Pix since picking up a lite.

I've passed on Pac N Roll for pretty cheap since I already have MPP.
 
Get Feel The Magic ($14?) and Rub Rabbits ($17?).

I also thought Zoo Tycoon was pretty good. There is another strategy one that's good, not Shogun Empires(?), but Age of Empires.

No, besides Animal Crossing I play the death out of Trauma Center. I'm not very good at video games and rarely does one hold my attention, but I really think Trauma Center is a huge challenge and the perfect ds game. I love it. I think that it, animal crossing, and NSMB are the only games that "i got my money's worth" paying full price.

Feel the magic is also good...I got it for $2 @ kmart....worth every penny. and animal crossing.....


did I mention animal crossing?
