Are jokes about dead people intollerable?

I frequent the social boards at gamefaqs.com.

Over the past few weeks of death (Johny Chockern [sp?], Terri Schavio, The Pope) there have been many topics containing jokes about them.

I'm sure many of you know how humor is a way some people deal with tragedy.

Now, for some reason, jokes (not sexual jokes) about these people are being deleted as being too offensive to leave posted.

As far as I am concerned, there is nothing that can't be joked about. I can form the words, type the letters, and make any joke about anything. The only variable is who finds it funny, and who doesn't. So...this leads me my question...

Are jokes about dead people intollerable? Or should they be allowed on a message board?

There's ur problem right there.... I only use gamefaqs for info on games and when I need it, ask questions on the boards about games that aren't "famous" I.E. Combat 121.
 
I don't care for jokes about the dead, since I've had too many real expericences of people I care about dieing so I try to have respect for the dead and their friends and family.

Agreed. If the person was a real bastard (Hussein's sons) I don't think most people would care. Usually it isn't a good idea though.

The joke I posted was,

While it can be in poor taste(yet still funny) to comment in a negative way after someone dies, death shouldn't give people a pass on the bad things they did life. It always frustrates me that only the positive is highlighted when looking back on the lifes of certain people. They may have done good things, but no one is a perfect person and that should be reflected in the remembrance.

Let us say, that they aren't. Are they offensive, and should they be deleted from message boards? Are they so bad that moderators should go out of the way removing them from boards?
 
I am fighting the ruling on that joke at Gamefaqs. Also, they deleted my joke,

"Why did the corener rule that Johnny Cochrien wasn't really dead?

He didn't fit the coffin."

I'm not sure. It would be best if it was addressed in the terms of service on each message board.

BTW, jokes about deaths are funny as long as it's not directly to a close member of the person that died. Otherwise, everyone's fair game. But I do think some jokes can be too soon.
 
I think it should be case-by-case: each board should look at their member's reactions and decide whether or not to leave the joke that way.

I usually don't do famous dead people jokes... I didn't care when they were alive, I don't care now. I'm usually surprised if I even get the joke.

If the jokes are done well, they are hilarious. But if they are poorly executed and their only shot at being funny is OMG OFFENSIVE! because it's about some sacred cow, then no, they aren't funny.
