As might be made obvious by the title, this is the new RPG thread... right now I'm playing FFX International and I'm pretty close to the end. I already finished FFX way back, but I'm playing through this new version and I still love the game.

Okay, commence the discussion!

I just released the PSP has become an RPG powerhouse in its own right, and I'm talking this time about big name developed games, not shit like Legend of Heroes.

For the rest of this year, the PSP (in the US) will be seeing:

Tales of the World
Final Fantasy 1
Final Fantasy 2
Riviera
Disgaea (August, I think, but no release date on GS)
Final Fantasy Tactics (hopefully this year, no release date yet)
Jeanne D'Arc (no release date either)
Oblivion
Harvest Moon

Just announced:

Star Ocean 1
Star Ocean 2

That's a lot of RPG's... half of them are ports but I never played the originals so it's all new to me :D This is in addition to awesome RPG's we already have like Valkyrie Profile.

Now if only Konami would smarten up and release Suikoden 1 + 2 here... I heard it's because of abysmal sales in Japan they never ported it elsewhere, but if Harvest Moon is getting brought out here on the PSP after being out in Japan since 2005, there is still hope for Suikoden!

I like my DS, but other than Final Fantasy 3 there is really no RPG's whatsoever that appeal to me, so I'm glad my other portable can pick up the slack.

Oh that's right... forgot about Tales of the World and Jeanne D'Arc... hell, are we getting the 23478234982374 other Tales games that were announced for the PSP?

Anyway, I'm hoping for Crisis Core this year...

Yea, I forgot about Crisis Core... and I did forget about those other Tales games. Did they even come out in Japan yet? Hopefully we'll be seeing a release date soon, OR they are going to use Tales of the World is a measuring stick to see if it's even worth bringing out the rest over here.

Didn't they do that with Abyss? I remember they used sales of Legendia to determine whether or not to bring Abyss out here.

I'm still not giving up on Suikoden 1 / 2... wish Konami would just dump it over here.

I'm just trying to bide my time till Odin Sphere comes out. Since I finished .hack GU 1 there's not much I feel like playing right now.

Chacrana, does FFX-2 International have full english until the tower? I know FFX has full english, but in menus/commands also? What about X-2?

FFX-2 only has English voice overs. All text is in Japanese throughout the game. It's disappointing to say the least.

I'm about halfway thru Fire Emblem: PoR for the Cube and still slowly chugging along in FF3 for the DS.

Fire Emblem is taking me alot longer than I anticipated, since I gotta keep resetting the damn thing everytime someone dies. I hate how some guys can be one-shotted, but overall I've been very impressed with the story. I didn't anticipate that the game would be as good as its turned out to be.

Any release date on Fire Emblem for Wii in the US?

I'm hoping the Wii game will be out by October, 6-8 months following the Japanese release like PoR. But no word yet.

To be honest, I'm more excited about the NEXT Wii Fire Emblem (they're already talking about it hypothetically), which will feature online battling and hopefully use the pointer. Goddess of Dawn is really yet another Cube -> Wii port, but they didn't bother tacking on any Wii features, just uses the classic controller.

I just recently finished putting 230 hours into Disgaea 2. I don't even remember what games I was playing before it. After that I took a break from RPGs and spent 20 glorious hours playing Godhand. Right now I just started Suikoden 5 but I play on going back to Godhand again eventually.

I've found the trick is to take a break from RPGs after each one. This way I don't get burned out on them like before. Maybe I'll finally get to Beyond Good and Evil after Suikoden 5.

i beat dragon warrior 4 in 2 days thanks to the power of emulation speed up! playing RPGs without it feels so weird. it turns 40 hour rpgs into 8 hour ones.

man, i wish i kept my dragon warriors in mint condition... i just have the cartridges. i used to have the strategy guide for dw4 but i don't know where i put it.

let's talk about dumb things to happen in an RPG!

i played dragon warrior 3 when i was a kid, it's really long and ardurous... so i was all excited when i got to the last dungeon. i saved it off and planned to beat it the next day.
when i loaded it up, i found out that my brother had messed up all the games and replaced them with his. great. i didn't finish it until probably 11 years later when the gbc version came out.

think that's bad?
i played xenogears till the last dungeon, just messing around with the side quests that don't really do anything for you. and well, xenogears is one of those rpgs where the story has a lot of "oh sh**" moments, so it's kinda fun to go back and play through and see how it unfolded. i started up a new game just so i can check it out, then i accidentally saved over my final dungeon game.

yeah.
so i had to replay the entire game just to see the ending. i kept falling asleep too.

Not tring to bust your balls here, but care to explain that? Getting the best weapons/items and expanding more on char's plot does nothing for you?
I'm playing the new .hack game. A nice extension of the last one.

I just want Mass Effect as soon as possible. I need that game...
So far I'm enjoying the game as well. They really add new stuff in the mix. They also fix some of problems found in part one such as much faster fighting pace, faster chi chi gathering with team kicking and pressing select to view the largest mini map keeps in place. The new additions I found so far is Crimson Vs (a card base style), finding tri-edge symbols from AIDA are sort like finding virus cores for special bosses in old version, bike parts, alchemy on armor or accesories and the revised gobblin tagged which now involves bikes instead of foot race.

I hope this episode will answer a bit more mysterious of "The World". Now Tri-Edge have some new goons that look like Orca and Balmuge, I wonder are they related to old user in past episode? Did Kite really subcome to data drain and become tri edge? What the hell is Aida? What is Sauki, Cc Corp and many other characters true intentions? I guess the only way to find it, is to beat the game.

dont forget Brave Story: New Traveler and Dungeon Maker: Hunting Ground for PSP from XSeed.
Not tring to bust your balls here, but care to explain that? Getting the best weapons/items and expanding more on char's plot does nothing for you?
Since the last dungeon is done while in Gears, it doesn't make too much sense to get each character's best weapon when they're on foot. I don't think Esmeralda's sidequest affects her performance in her Gear either, which was the only relevant plot-expanding sidequest... the desert sequence didn't really have any plot. Nor did Battling have any effect either. =P

I'm not trying to knock Xenogears or anything, it's a pretty good game. It was meant to illustrate the point that I wasted a bunch of time screwing around instead of finishing the game. =P

I really have been meaning to start FFXII for a while now but can't get around to it. What am I missing out on?

Just got the following email from Atlus:

Members of the gaming press,

Atlus USA is pleased to announce the official North American release of Growlanser: Heritage of War, a new entry in the acclaimed Growlanser series, for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system. Featuring an epic story, stellar art and music, and hardcore RPG gameplay, Growlanser: Heritage of War is a worthy addition to both the series and the genre. Please reference the official press release (attached) for additional details.
About Growlanser: Heritage of War

On an island continent shrouded in darkness and bounded on every shore by an impassable veil, war rages among desperate inhabitants fighting for survival. A mysterious famine has ravaged the land, leaving its denizens to struggle over what little fertile land remains. There is no safe haven; land that war has left untouched is still threatened by the Screapers, fierce and powerful monsters steadily encroaching on the cities of men. Hope is fading - who will rise to save this dying land?

Key Features

•Over 70 Hours of Gameplay! A sweeping story arc spanning 5 lengthy chapters, with additional chapters to
unlock.

•A Fantasy World Comes To Life! Story unfolds through gorgeous hand-drawn animation and character
portraits by artist Satoshi Urushihara.

•Strategic Party-based Combat! The action is faster and more exciting than ever as you use an advanced
troop command system to give orders to your allies – smart tactics are the key to victory.

•Manage Your Character’s Ability Tree! Change your character’s abilities based on the needs of the
situation. As your character levels, so too do your Ability Plates!

•Discover A Magical Fairy Companion! The more time you spend training your fairy partner, the richer your interactions will be with her, and the more she can assist you on your quest. You can even enter her in the great Fairy Contest – her performance as she competes with other fairies in a tournament of skills depends on how well you have prepared her!

•Cultivate Intimate Relationships With Your Allies! With the Friendship and Personality Rating System, your personality can either limit or enhance your interactions with others; the outcome of your encounters depends entirely on your behavior! Mold a protagonist as ill-tempered or good-natured as you desire. And if you're brave enough, reveal your true feelings to a companion; if they come to feel the same way about you, you'll be rewarded with a bonus hand-drawn character-specific ending animation that puts the icing on
the cake!
It's nice to know that Atlus is now publishing it instead of Working Design. I wonder will they release the older versions?

Playing Mother 3 again now. Good times.

I've been very slowly working through FFVI advance since release (I've played it to death on the SNES when I was younger, so no rush), and I recently continued though Dragon Quest VIII. Finished Enchanted Arms a few weeks ago.

Can't wait for Blue Dragon...

Thats what the GBA slot is for on your DS.

I'm currently playing Yggdra Union, and its fucking awesome. I'm only on battlefiled 20 or so and its already in my top 5 strat rpg list (and Ive played just about all of them). The game just does so many little things that make playing it enjoyable that other games don't.

I'm also currently playing through the GBA Final Fantasy series, currently doing the Soul of Rebirth in FF2

Dave

If Harvest Moon is referring to Innocent Life: A Futuristic Harvest Moon, thats not a port. It is ported back to PS2 in Japan however

but I also found Tactocs Ogre GBA at gamestop buring b2g1...

and I still got both Super Robot Wars, Summon Knight 2, both Boktais, and MMZ4 all on backlog (currently playing boktai 1 & MMZ4 btw)

mother freakin GBA man, best system ever

I don't care that they are ports or not because I've never played most of them, besides Final Fantasy 1 + 2, so it really makes no difference to me.

And Star Ocean 1 is a port but I doubt anyone has played the properly translated Enix version unless they speak Japanese, and I really don't like slogging through RPG Rom's on the computer with a fan translation which is hit or miss.

And MS, I've played through all the GBA RPG's I care to play through, just waiting on someone to drop Yggdra Union to cheap before I buy it. Not terribly concerned over getting it, though. Was hoping it would one day go to $20 like Summon Night 1 + 2 and SRT 1 + 2 but no dice yet.

Maybe I'll go snatch up a cart only $20 used copy at EB though, one day. Might wait for another b2g1 free.

You can play Star Ocean 1 with the dejap fan translated, which is fully in English.

However I would be very excited about a PSP version if the improvements are as good as the improvements from Tales of Phantasia SFC to ToP PSP.

imo, nothing really.

the story is kinda cool but you slog through so many dungeons and miniquests that you kinda forget about it. i didn't really enjoy all the extra stuff either...

it's fun if you have a lot of time to set aside... some of the dungeons took me about 2-3 hours...

Currently playing SMT: Nocturne (finally finished all the kalpa's, now working my way to the end)
Atelier Iris (I surprisingly like it)
Shadow Hearts from the new world. (everyone's right. it's not as good as the first 2)
Dragon Quest 8. (sometimes feels like a chore, but has it's moments.

Finished phantom brave about a month ago and want another game similar to it.

While I appreciate the link, I already knew about it, which is why I mentioned I'd like an a) professionally translated SquareEnix version and b) I don't like playing through RPG rom's (or any sort of rom, really) on the computer.

 you even quoted the post where I said both of those. In any case, I'm not going to really lament the fact Star Ocean is a "port" since it's the first time it's commercially available in the US, and I'd much rather have that over the alternative.

It would be nice now if SE put Secret of Mana 3 on the DS / PSP and we ended up getting a translated version of that too.

Ah, Shadow Hearts 3...that game was one of the biggest letdowns ever for me.

I popped in DQ8 this morning after putting it off for months. I totally forgot how good the game was. I just need to get back into all the gameplay details and I'll be playing it again. I still have Odin Sphere coming up, but I'm just a damn RPGholic.

I've tried to take breaks between RPGs. It doesn't always work.

Now I have to get GrimGrimoire after reading that import review and watch the trailer video in the old thread. It looks very unique to the PS2 library. I've usually keep away from Console RTS but this one actually looks like it will be good.

opps I somehow read that as using a translation guide. While Dejap quality is not the best, many fan translation are much better than professional translation. For one thing they usually have a chance to fix any mistake that are made. While Star Ocean doesnt run prefect, I usually play most of my rom on psp myself.

Sorry I'm late to the party, guys. Never got the invite.

Other than Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, and Lost Oddyssey(sp), what RPGs are coming out for the 360? I'm loving the PSP and DS RPGs but I want some truly next-gen RPGs that aren't called Final Fantasy.

Still don't understand why people think ports are bad. Especially when it's ported to a hendheld. Since when could you play Disgaea while driving?

I'm all for ports of games coming to the PSP. Valkyrie Profile was impossible to find normally but I got a chance to play it on the PSP. If we can get Suikoden II in English, I'll be happy. This will also be the first time Star Ocean 1 will have an English release. It'd be great to get some new original RPGs but I'm all for going back to play games I've never played before. I'm just wondering when Vagrant Story and Xenogears will come out on the PSP.

you can get Suikoden II in English, for free, with homebrew :)

I've come to the sad realization that I'll never be able to play a straight J-rpg again. After playing Oblivion, it's impossible to go back to them. I went back to FFXII, a game I loved before I started playing oblivion, and could not believe how generic it seemed. SMT: DS too, as well as Nocturne.

Odin Sphere looks different enough though...gotta support 2D :)

Has anyone finished VP2: Silmeria? I'm can't fuckin' defeat
angrim and purple lady face!!whatever her name is!!
Damn them!

Great game though;)

Got started into Rogue Galaxy for real (sort of dumb at this point since I'm going to lose track of what I'm doing after my upcoming vacation, but oh well). Great game so far after a few hours. Finally a game with some voice acting that isn't horrendous.

I just plowed through Lunar Knights in 2 1/2 days. For a 12-hour dungeon crawler, it wasn't bad.

Odin Sphere is looking great. That may be my first $50 game purchase since Twilight Princess.
